Torvill & Dean Putting on the ritz

- This number has a slightly unusual history. When Mack & Mabel hit the public eye, one of the British tabloid newspapers commented on its 'Fred Astaire' qualities and got T&D to dress as Fred & Ginger for a photo shoot (on the ice). Intrigued by this, they decided to choreograph a number to go with it, though the outfits needed a bit of modification!

The little stepping sequence at 0:59 rules! Give me artistry, simplicity, chemistry over acrobatics anyday. These guys are still the best.
All that very fast pick work is super difficult and dangerous. Great choreography. Great skate.
Thank you for posting this gem.
Torvill & Dean are truly in a league of their own.
Ah!!! the good old days...my youth was spent watching these two...they are legends...
They are so wonderfully artistic you sometimes forget they are skating on skinny little blade ON ICE !!! Amazing !!!
I love Torvill and Dean!!! They are the BEST!!!! This is an awesome routine! Awesome footwork! They are so in unison! Skating as ONE!!! Thank you so much for posting!!
Absolutely perfect and brilliant! Wow! ... 😊😊😊
I absolutely do not remember this routine. My loss, it's great. Some very original moves, love the super musical footwork and the speed and balanced ice coverage. Side note: great dress on Jane, very flattering.
Thank you for posting this wonderful piece of history.
How are you doing today my name is Eric Moore
Now THIS is Ice Dancing...
They are really like they are one person in this 🤗them @ Fred @ Ginger ....the likes we will never see again ..🤗what delight indeed !
That dance looks so difficult, it’s so exposed if one were to slip just once, they are so extraordinary I can’t get enough of those two.
Fantastic! Such joy to watch without fear that they are going to fall...
Flawless skating, beautiful costumes, and always great programs.
exuberant and brilliant
They are like one. The perfect match.
They seem to float across the ice... so light and free!
Stunning , exquisite and sheer brilliant , no one can beat them
There are none that can touch them, even today! When they retired, I stopped watching ice dancing. Got to see them in person in San Diego, CA. Second row seats, and I could feel the wind on my face as they flew by. Many were in tears after watching them. The greatest show/concert/production I've EVER been to, they are the epitome of brilliance and talent!

So did I. Stopped watching ice dancing. It's not d same without T and D...
THIS is what Fred & Ginger would look like on ice.
I haven't seen this routine before, however the performance is absolutely spectacular 💐🤯🎶🎵
This is one of my favourite routines
I have not seen this piece until today. I will never understand why these two did not get married. They are the ultimate couple.
I think it would have had a detrimental affect on the professional relationship
Skating became a passion for both of them from early on in life. The perfect dance partner is a rare find. I can understand a reluctance to gamble with that. It is an uncommonly strong friendship between a man an a woman that has spanned decades. I like to think that on some starry night they satisfied their curiosity and were content to leave it there. They claim what they show us on the ice is a performance. Maybe so, but it is the most convincing that I've ever seen.
I've just came across this , and I'm blown away how brilliant this ice dance is
This is what ice dancing is all about! They could make tapping ones toe pick on the ice interesting. Great footwork, not a step out of place.

They make it look so easy, love watching them
Breathtaking - always!
I really thought this performance was Oct 1981 when they first show-cased Mack and Mabel. There was also a clip on You Tube of them performing this at Skate Canada gala too, although they never managed to compete at SC owing to their schedule.
One observation: nowadays, as part of Ice Dance rules couples have to incorporate step sequences into the FD. I've still NEVER seen step sequences as difficult, fluid and co-ordinated as in this routine. There is never a leg, arm, toe-pick out of line!

Jayne and Chris are talented skaters, but they are brilliant dancers as well. Besides which, they have verve combined with creative vision. In short, they're phenomenal!
Amazing ! Love them

WOW!! THE FOOTWORK!! FABULOUS!!!
How are you doing today my name is Eric Moore
They are the best!
I think this is one of their very best, from a wealth of innovative, beautiful dances over the years.
Chris has amazingly sexy body and it's a joy to watch him moving on the ice. Jayne is like a doll in his hands - she does everything he wants with such ease and grace. They were born for each other to dance. With their professionalism, creativity, and enormous talant they redefined dancing on the ice.
nleytman
Tonight i watched sat dancing on ice on itv and to see how chris and jane can still dance all you need to do is go on line and get the itv app and watch that dance still as agile
He looks best when he is in motion. Only then do you get to see his incredible speed, grace, and precision. In his younger years his face has the pure aesthetic beauty of an archangel. The costumes are particularly flattering too, emphasizing slim clean line. The jackets are cropped so the long waist and narrow hip are unobstructed. Very beautiful. When couples dance, I always watch the woman, but with these two, I can't seem to take my eyes from Chris.
Pure magic❤❤❤❤❤
lovely to watch! Graceful and precise
A fitting homage to the great Fred Astaire!
How has it got to 2019 and It’s the first time I’ve seen this?! I’ve seen everything J&C ever did! I’m guessing it was because it was c 1981/1982 & I was 8/9 and had strict parents. It’s fantastic. I know they are massive Astaire & Rogers fans and they did a great Astaire & Rogers routine in one of their pro tours way before let’s face the music, Jayne wore a blue dress with a feather skirt & I really think these are some of their best works. Thank you for posting
yes, once, but it was in the warm-up to the compulsory dances in the 1982 Worlds. Even their falls have great timing!
Incomparables.
They are the Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers Of Ice Dancing. They have the same joy, synchronization and of course Chemistry! Like Astaire and Rogers they are perfectionists at their craft. In a way they surpass Astaire and Rogers since they are dancing on Ice!
Quillerpen, thank you for posting this video.
Sheet enjoyment. Thank you for uploading. I love the song, always have.
THE BEST EVEN IN2022
I love this dance. I think Jayne and Chris can probably still do this dance now. I hope one day Chris and Jayne will choreograph another big band, Fred astaire and ginger rogers ball room dancing routine on DOI!
Beautiful skaters. Perfect.
I just can't get over how good they are!
Thank you SO much for this! There used to be a posting of them doing this in exhibition at Skate Canada in 1982 (altho they never competed at SC).
Their unison, and footwork are incredible and would easily hold up as footwork level 4 under the new CoP imo.
They combined power, delicacy, technique and artistry. AND Chris Dean choreographed everything! I don't know any competitve skaters today who choreograph their own rountines!
えっ、本当に氷のうえ?見事な軽快なダンス、まるでブロードウェイのミュージカル、磨きぬかれた光を放っている、もはや芸術
Perfection!
Exquisite! Beauty and strength. Poetry on ice and unbeatable, even by today's standards. Torvill & Dean are a phenomenon, like a shooting comet, never to be repeated, not in this lifetime
I remember watching them in their first Olympics, they took the world by storm and captured eveyone's imagination. Jayne is a Goddess on the ice and Chris is a Knight, like Lancelot ravishing us with his eloquent strength...and takes my breath away. Sigh..🔥
To me, he is more like Michelangelo' David who suddenly become alive, grab the hand of a beautiful lady and start dancing ☺. They are the feast for the eyes!
Lovely routine, beautifully skated

Thank you for posting this. I've never seen it before, such a joy to watch!!
The best ever imho
now, we won't see the likes of these two for years to come, many years to come.
Fabulous
Супер скольжение, изысканная манера танцевать на льду.
And look at the lovely classic old building of a skating rink they're dancing in too.....al our old buildings all gone for modern plastic looking boxes
Richmond was a lovely building; i used to skate there myself. The downside was that it was smaller than the standard size rink so skaters occasionally had problems fitting their routines onto it - which was why it wasn't used for major competitions. Also, being right beside the Thames made it prime real estate - there is a block of posh flats there now and the replacement rink that was promised for the area never happened :-(
quillerpen such a shame.....and so typical of today's relentless building....days back then so much simpler ...thanks for the update...I went there once as a child
quillerpen Grr!
Haven seen this one. Good job & ty.
I am sure they practice for months on end after all they are professionals & make it look so easy to do. xo
This Couple were the best in the World and still are.....absolute Perfectionists. You would never have to worry about being dropped by him.....He is very strong and has a firm hold on her at all times. I wish I could of danced with him just once....It would of been Heaven for me....LOL , maybe not for him.
When you watch this, you wonder what happened to ice dancing. It doesn't exist. Skate, skate and a lift and repeat. There is no more ice dancing. Very sad!
Great routine
TORVILL AND DEAN - TIMELESS
According to my records they first performed this at the Worlds gala in Copenhagen which would be 1982 (the year they did Mack & Mabel). I think this particular performance was from the St ivel the following autumn, - it's certainly Richmond - when they did exhibitions but did not compete.
thank
Perfection as usual. How old are they here.
This was November 1982 so they would have been about 24-25
Çok güzel 🌹🧿
Under-rated.
None have surpassed them|
Oh god the delights of Jayne Torvill's thighs!
Compelling
Wow..did they *ever* fall?!
What year was this?
1982
Chris also fell during practice in the '84 olympics whilst practicing the paso doble.
Великолепно. Моя любимая пара.
