Indeed! For many years preceding this performance and many years after, I
faithfully watched the figure skating world.
Torvill & Dean's performance was, to me, so transcendent that I thought (and hoped!) that it would ultimately change pairs skating, and, to some degree, singles skating.
      Unfortunately, it did not.
Which is not to say that I think that what happens currently is bad. It's just that that I loved the idea of taking a single piece of music and allowing it's development to meet all the skating requirements that are needed. Torvill and Dean were ahead of the curve in so many ways

How wonderfully poignant. I was 10 and was sitting watching it with my then 80 year old Great Grandma at her house, which I always associate with a place of safety back then. We were equally excited, 4 generations apart and together for such a fantastic occasion. I watch this performance and feel again all those lovely personal associations and would go back in a heart beat.

They are interesting to listen to so many years after; sharing all "behind scene" thoughts, feelings, Emotions. One would have thought ,as most people did . They were in love. ! Nice to see Ann involved. Thank you for this insight of such a special event.

They had a sort of love, the kind where you work/play together for so long and so intimately that you can achieve perfect synchrony of mood and movement. It's more rare than sexual love. Virtue and Moir also have it.

I knew I would buy a VCR one day so I could play this routine & watch it again & again. LOL. Later bought the professional VHS version and now......look at all the you tube I can watch with it. A routine for eternity. So glad we have the technology to preserve it and re-view. It was & is electric. This is a wonderful video to watch. Thank you for posting.

One of the things I took from this clip was where Torvill says the teacher took them to the ice rink off her own back. It must have seemed like such a little thing to that teacher at the time and yet small acts of kindness in providing opportunities to people can be so transformative. I do find it sad that such initiative these days would be frowned upon and it leaves you wondering if we have made a society where such exceptionalism is now beyond our children's reach.

    • @annnee6818
      @annnee6818 6 лет назад +2

Grow Insane ??? People help other people nowadays too. All the time. The "moral police issue" (which is annoying but has more to do with things you say in public than anything else) is completely separate from that. Old people always whine that people used to be kinder "back in the day" and that it was "safer back then" when by every objective measure that's demonstrably false. Aaaah dementia. One day you'll probably get me too.

@@maureenleigh4724 I was a school bus driver when one of my 9 yo fell over and cut her knee, I pulled over, got out my First Aid kit and cleaned and bandage the bloody wound, after tendering my assurances that you won't die from infection, we got on our way.
I tell you, the bush telegraph is a lot damn quicker than email, by the time I got back to the depot, all hell broke loose.
DID YOU TOUCH THE CHILD? Well, of course I did, her knee was bleeding all over the floor, she was upset and in pain, got out my Companies First Aid Kit, (you know, the kits you supplied two years ago, to administer to the kids) and bandage her up
DID YOU TOUCH THE CHILD? Whatttt, are you deaf, I just told you what I did, YES, I TOUCHED THE CHILD, I put a damn band aid across her knee, what are the First Aid Kits for? Decoration? YOUR'RE NOT ALLOWED TO TOUCH THE CHILD, she was bleeding all over the floor and down her leg (should not have said that said that) DOWN HER LEG, DID YOU TOUCH HER LEG? Well, the cotton bandage wasn't going to do it, Cathy (the child) wasn't going to do it, so I did it, I wiped up the blood off her leg an knee and applied a band aid & Dettol antiseptic.
Thus I was reported to the Dept. of Transport for touching a child, I was reprimanded, given a lecture on child endangerment, given another lecture of the things I can and can't do with a child, blah blah blah.
As soon as I got back onto my bus, I tossed out the First Aid Kit, let the bastards bleed, I don't care anymore, actually I still do, but I won't be giving First Aid to anyone else from now on, up yours Wisely's, bloody WANKERS

Perhaps because their performance speaks so elegantly, eloquently and passionately of something essential and utterly recognisable in human connection. I'm glad to have been alive to see it (again). I’ve watched this performance so many times and I’ve only just noticed that when they slide to lay down Chris face actually bounces off the ice at 48:38 that’s got to have hurt! Why these two legends haven’t been given a Dame and Knighthood I’ll never know! They’ve done so much for young people long before they became well known to younger generations because of DOI they set up so many charities and programs to help others, yet they’ve only been given OBE when a lot of others who’ve got Knighthoods and Dame-hoods haven’t done half the work these two have.

Both Jane Torville and Christopher Dean were honored with an MBE in 1981, and OBE in 2000. But only the two highest honors list KBE/DBE and GBE allow for the title of Sir or Dame. The British crown can directly award a Knight Bachelor to British citizens which allows for the title of Sir or Dame directly.
