Its unreal how fast basil germinates and grows if given enough heat. I haven't even found light to really be an issue. Its like microgreens. Any south facing window is perfectly fine. The stems for some reason start to brown and harden and the leaves wilt or turn brown like they’re getting burnt. Aphids have been an issue but I regularly pick through my little basil plants to keep them away. Does Basil need a specific pot? And does it really need a specific kind of soil? It’s apparently an easy herb to grow but I struggle keeping them alive.

My apartment doesnt have too much sunlight but it gets about 2 hours of direct sunlight and 4 hours of a generally bright window and i give it another 3 hours of the brightest white light pointed straight at it. Its been sitting in a water jar for 1.5 week now and its got a single root. I just changed the water yesterday. The basil look green and fresh, the stem got some black or dark brown in it but overall it looks very healthy. But it wont root at all. Its been 12 days. My home isnt super warm all the time but its a not cold. Its 21-22C (~71F) at all times. What should i do?

Dang, sorry to hear that. Could be the white-fly that took them down, could be the environmental change from outside to inside that did it, or a combination. What did they look like when they died? Did they go yellow/brown and dry up? Or did they darken, but stay green and wilt?
My basil plants keep dying I have them in my sun room. They do well for a few weeks and then the stem goes limp and it starts to die. I have them planted in miracle grow soil, watering them 1-2 times every 2 weeks and It’s about 53F in my sun room.
You may already have figured this out, but basil does better at higher temperatures than that, and depending on the type of basil it might be dying from cold damage. The optimal temperature for basil is 70-80F, with a night-time drop in temperature to about 65F. 50F is minimum temperature for a lot of basil types, meaning it can survive shorter periods of such temperatures, but will not thrive for long.
I started my basil plant outdoors and it's growing slowly but surely. If I decide that I rather grow it indoors in a window, will that shock the plant and cause damage?

Spritz/spray with some diluted soapy water water. Or a sponge with all the sopay bubbles foam, directly on affected areas. Then rinse off a min later . Is there a better way? .
100% awesome... But also 100% overkill for herbs. Indirect light from a window is usually enough for herbs. Still though, that light will open up the possibilities for other indoor veggies! Could be very very good!
$250 seems expensive... Must be quite a powerful one. Any idea of the lumens or wattage? You'd options to grow indoors with that one could be quite expansive!
@@eaglelight108 Ahhhhh cool! So like a little herb garden kit! Very nice. Good for microgreens too man. You should try those as well....10-12 day crops! Unlimited potential Eagle Light! :-)
The Ripe Tomato Farms ....oh that’s great, because I picked it up in mail yesterday! When you say “micro greens” are you thinking like lettuces, mustards, spinach es etc? What else is a “micro green”? Do you have a suggestion for best place to purchase micro green seeds and other vegetable seed? Like maybe west Coast seeds? I also know about Richters Herbs in Ontario. Are there other really cool ones I have not heard about?
Thanks Eagle. I simply put the contained soil on a heat mat, bring it indoors, use warm water to pre soak... Many different ways. Remember, this is only for either pure tropical plants or if it's freezing outside and that's where you store your soil. Just one way to reduce both transplant shock and increase germination rates. Cheers!
Basil inside seems like the hardest thing in the world to grow. Every time I try to the leaves becomes discolored and the plant doesn’t grow. Eventually it starts looking so bad I just throw it out.
What type of soil are you using? What temperature is your home? How much light does the plant get? How often do you water it? If you don't know how to handle those factors properly, the plant will wither and die ir discolor. Basil needs a lot of sunlight or a quality indoor grow lamp. It also needs a good amount of moisture but not too much or you're going to cause mold to kill the plant. Watering it once per day or every two days in well draining soil should more than suffice. You basically just don't want the soil to dry out. So water it just before it does. Once you get the hang of how much water you need, then it should be smooth sailing.
Hey. I'm a beginner and I'm growing this in India (hot and dry). The temp. is aprox 25-30C where I live so I water the seeds and sprouts a little every alternate day. But a lot of times it has happened that the seeds germinate but then die out over the next few days. Do you have any idea why this might be? I would really love to get it right.

Less important than you think. 90% of people over water... And it's the one parameter that changes based on variables I have no way of predicting. Ambient air temperature, air circulation, transpiration rates, soil permeability, absorption, and evaporation rates.... All things that are different in everyone's setup.... Which is why hardly anyone suggests a watering schedule.
Now I would remind you, brothers, of the gospel I preached to you, which you received, in which you stand, and by which you are being saved, if you hold fast to the word I preached to you--unless you believed in vain. @@TheRipeTomatoFarms thank you for quick response. I love your videos and mourn not getting to make pesto in the winter so this is a big help along with your video about making new plants from basil cuttings.
@@sparklegirl1111 thanks for watching! Basil in the winter is a must. Once you get it germinated and growing, Basil is really undemanding...
Do I plant holy basil (Tulsi)in same way?
I would definitely space out Holy Basil more. It can grow into quite a large shrub, so I don't think packing the seeds that tightly together would be good! Space them out a bit more, or even start them singly in plug trays! Cheers.
but i love your channel thx
Thanks so much Gazelle! That's super nice to hear! :-)
Where can I learn about your heating set up?
I appreciate this video ❤️
Hi do I water the ginger pulp
Basil or Ginger?
ok but how often should I water?
What is your growing zone? I see snow!
......I heard Vancouver island wash it with a snowstorm! I purchased on line a grow light from Lee Valley....I think it costs $250 for a 12 inch by 24 inch....LED lights coming with......I was going to
Drive to the wee rural alberta village to pick it up today at post office.....do you think this is “overkill”?
Is there a better way?
.
100% awesome... But also 100% overkill for herbs. Indirect light from a window is usually enough for herbs. Still though, that light will open up the possibilities for other indoor veggies! Could be very very good!
$250 seems expensive... Must be quite a powerful one. Any idea of the lumens or wattage? You'd options to grow indoors with that one could be quite expansive!

It’s this one...but the bigger size....
How so often do you water them?
Depends on the size of the pot. Larger pots, once a month....smaller pots, more often.
How do you preheat your soil?
Thanks Eagle. I simply put the contained soil on a heat mat, bring it indoors, use warm water to pre soak... Many different ways. Remember, this is only for either pure tropical plants or if it's freezing outside and that's where you store your soil. Just one way to reduce both transplant shock and increase germination rates. Cheers!
I m in gulf country so my temperature is reach up to 50 in summer so how can i grow indoor basil plant
How do you heat the soil? Indoors
Basil inside seems like the hardest thing in the world to grow. Every time I try to the leaves becomes discolored and the plant doesn’t grow. Eventually it starts looking so bad I just throw it out.
Me too. I might try growing from seed.
Over watering. No plant needs water every 2nd day.....you're drowning them.
Thanks for this. I've just put in new seeds. I'll see how it goes this time. Will make sure not to drown them... :|
Fantastic content. Thank you
(random observation but the way you complete your sentences with an upward inflection... I keep thinking you are uncertain and asking me a question 😅)
Every sentence? Is a question?
bologna never worked for me. i am using a grow light now
All plants grow better with more light at a wider spectrum
Hi, I can't see to find your tutorials on potting mixes. thanks, are there any title Soil or Potting mix?
Hi Dwayne, I have a couple, and will be doing an updated one this spring. ruclips.net/video/9IP51CMBLaA/видео.html and ruclips.net/video/a8-odh0drcA/видео.html Cheers!
10+
:-)
Did you cover with wax paper?
4:42
No south facing windows :(
Dang, might have to go supplemental light...at least early on to get it established.
I think love is required to grow anything.
And patience! :-)
Info on how to take care of and water/feed? etc is what I needed so this video wasn't too helpful.
Please, please, please use metric system 🙏
I normally do
What about watering? Isn’t that kinda important
Now I would remind you, brothers, of the gospel I preached to you, which you received, in which you stand,
and by which you are being saved, if you hold fast to the word I preached to you--unless you believed in vain.
For I delivered to you as of first importance what I also received: that Christ died for our sins in accordance with the Scriptures,
that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures,
~1. Corinthians 15:1-4
God bless you!
So funny -- you pronounce herbs like `herbs' -- should be with a silent `H', so `erbs' lol
I thought so too. So I looked it up. Turns out, Americans pronounce it with a silent H. Brits pronounce the H (as one would pronounce the nickname for Herbert). The host of this video sounds Canadian to me, so it makes sense that he is using the British version.
Did he just say hhhherbs... lol
Forever and always... When I get my British citizenship, then I'll stop pronouncing the H!
Uhh its pronounced herb not herb
Are you sure it isn't herb?
I couldn't watch once you said "Herbs."
I couldn't read after you said your couldn't watch....
@@TheRipeTomatoFarms Love that response! Why are people so mean?
Man I hate upspeak. It just sounds like the cadence of the wrong. You're probably a great gardener. I just can't trust you cuz of your little kid inflection.
So is heat more important than light?
And how much light should it get in the summer, I live in Florida so direct light scorches the leaves on my plant
Hey Seth, not really. Basil is mediterranean, but room temps are just fine.
@@TheRipeTomatoFarms thankyou I think I will just keep it on my porch away from the bugs. Is basil better in the direct sunlight or morning sun afternoon shade?
@@sethwynn9512 it does like light, but lately I've been growing mine in a lot more shade and diffused light and the leaves are just getting massive. So definitely experiment!
@@TheRipeTomatoFarms ok thank you, that’s why I asked, because I’ve heard that the plant really likes sun for pure growth but the shade will make the leaves look like they are on roids lol
