As the person responsible for bringing this song to Jayhawk Nation, let me clear up a couple of things. First, I graduated from high school in Nebraska (Kearney), I learned this campfire song in Boy Scouts there, and so Husker fans (and Razorbacks), chill - it's all in fun. It was started my freshman year (Aug 1977) when myself and three other guys were trying to kill time before run-in by singing classic barbershop quartet songs. Fellow tubas John Clayton & Gordon Lankenau, with drum major Steve Gordon, and I ran thru a few songs to scattered applause and had time to do one more. I pulled Hog Calling out and said to just follow my lead with the chorus and call/response & "preaching". The people listening laughed and next week we were asked to do it again. And so it started. By the time I marched my last game as a student (1981), it had elevated to most of the band gathering around to join in. I continue to be amazed that the tradition continues, and continues to evolve. It's for the band members; it's not a diss of other states or mascots. It works for us or it would have stopped long ago. Enjoy it if you "get" it, don't watch if you don't. I guarantee the past, present and future band members won't care.
You created a monster! It will live as long as the rock chalk chant and the alma mater. Well done and thanks for the details, reminds me of the phog banner story. I was there the day of this video! It's the home finale against Iowa State when we won the Orange Bowl, the only time KU was 11-0 in football conference champions and undefeated at home. Quite a historic day
If I remember correctly, this was filmed before the Jayhawks dropped 76 points on the Huskers, the all-time record for points allowed by Nebraska. I suppose if some team had to have that record against us, it's fitting (and karma?) that it was KU, since we dropped 70+ on them a number of times in the 40 years straight we won. This is a classy song, and your band sang it well. I've come back to listen to it several times over the years. Good luck, Jayhawks!
@Xaber1: Being one of the old farts who was around in the '70s, I can confirm this account. It would have been 1978 or 1979. But I can also tell you that it was nothing this organized until after 1982 (my last marching year). I came back for the 2009 homecoming and was absolutely shocked that a goofy thing we did on the tuba bus had become an actual "thing". For what's it's worth, I approve :-)
Thanks for the kind words. As for how long Hog Calling has been preformed, I really don't know when it officially started. What part haven't you seen before? The last part with "What time is it" call and response? Or the 25 26 call outs?

I'm a freshman trumpet in the band this year and I had no idea what hog Calling was. LOL! It is quite an experience!

I just Hog-Called for my last time in Memorial as a Marching Jayhawk. I'm going to miss it.
