When my nephew was about six. I decided to make my first quilt. I took him with me as I shopped for fabric, and then I picked up a set of dishes that caught my eye. A few days later, as I was cutting the fabric for my project, he came to stand and watch for a few minutes. "You paid a lot of money for that material," he said. I assured him that the price was fair, and eventually he walked away. A few minutes later I heard him approach his mom. "Auntie is in the kitchen cutting all that stuff she bought into little pieces," he said doubtfully. His mom assured him that it was okay, that I was going to sew it back together. He was silent for a bit, and then I heard him ask, "Will she break up the dishes next? Should I get her the glue?" This video reminded me of that. Thanks for the memory. I found your process amazing, and the cover is gorgeous.
Such an awesome story!! We crafters of all kinds are crazy that way…tear or cut things apart only to put them back together in a new way! 😂. Thanks for sharing such a great story, Sharon! ❤️
I'm so excited to see what you create Gayle... And thank you so, so much for being a fantastic team member as part of this collaboration. Your ideas are always so much fun. Hugs to you, Joie 💜💐
Hi Gayle...I did enjoy that...so much...what a cool idea. Another thing to add to my" to try making" play list...thanks so much for showing us this technique. Have a wonderful day...durinda
I love this! I am finally making a quilt for my youngest son from the amazing clothing that he loved in the 80's when he was 11 or 12. He was quite a clothes horse. I saved labels, pockets and patches and any fabric that wasn't torn or too thin. I have lots of small pieces that I haven't thrown away yet and this craft would be perfect for a pillow I think. Thank you so much for sharing!
My favourite kind of machine stitching!!! 🥰 Love your cover Gayle!!! Thank you so much for sharing!!! I’m looking forward to watching the other crafters in this collaboration!!! Big hugs, Sharon 🌷💕
Thank you Gayle for another fun video. I love this journal cover. Love all the dark splashes of color. It will be perfect for a fall journal or a woodland journal. Beautiful!🌹🥰
Funny thing, late last night I was watching your video and I thought Alfie was whining because my dog was asleep. I paused video, couple times, then realized my tiny cat was snoring her head off. 😂😂🤣 Love this project, funny even YOU worry about collabs. 😃💙
Oh, I do worry! They make me nervous until I’ve gotten the video done and loaded and all the stuff in the description box! 😂. Thanks for watching, my friend! ❤️
Very nice! I think it would make a nice cover for a Christmas journal, what with the red, black, and green. A nice pieced red poinsettia on the cover would be pretty.
Gayle,i have watched several so far,you will be happy to know that you are the best machine stitcher, good control, well done missy 😂 nice project no competition so far! XxxLizzie
Beautiful journal cover...fun fast-flow...perfect collaboration!! I so enjoyed seeing you do this style again...this cover will soon become another gorgeous journal made by you; looking forward to it!! ❤🤗🍄🐿🍁
I made a skirt in high school home ec class, and it was asymmetric, and not on purpose! So nice to have a name for the way I sew! Fast Flow- describes it perfectly!
Good morning Miss Gayle!! Absolutely love this idea, maybe one day I will get to this step in junk journaling, lol I did go to Hobby Lobby yesterday and bought a LOT of things to get started on my junk journaling adventures..Thank you so much for sharing a really neat video..Enjoy your fussy cutting and sports today..Be blessed and stay safe! Lots of love from Kentucky❤
This is the craziest process and it always looks outstanding afterward. The last time you made one I told myself to try it but haven’t yet 😠. I love the color combinations on this one with the darker colors...sheer yumminess! 🥰❤️
Hi Gayle: You did such a good job. Really love your cover technique with those tiny fabric pieces. The fast stitching was a perfect addition. You all look like you’re having lots of fun. 💜😎🇺🇸
I know this technique as "confetti quilting". You can also make new fabric with this technique and cut out shapes like leaves or hearts and then stitch patterns in those shapes like the veins for the leaves. Have done that before. Just never thought of incorporating those in junk journals. Thank you for reminding me. 🙂 Greetings from Germany 🙋♀️
Really enjoyed that, Gayle! This has been a fantastic challenge. Everyone has come up with such different projects. Thanks for participating. I can imagine that challenges could be a little anxiety producing, but I love to see all the creative outcomes. And thanks to Joie for organizing this one.
Beautiful cover! Proof that even the tiniest scraps have a purpose! Need to "have a little shop" for some of that dissolvable stabilizer (That even looks like fun!!). Thanks for sharing another great technique. ~ Karen
Love the colors in this cover! I keep telling myself to try this but, you know how it goes...lol. Can't wait to see what all you amazing ladies do! Hugs...
This came out pretty Gayle! I was thinking after you did this last time for shabby chic you could get those bags of silk rose petals and laces and make one of these! 🌹🤍🌹🤍🌹
I do not have that stabilizer...headed to the store to get some. What a great look for a journal cover. It might just be what I need for my WIP journal. I am overwhelmed with fabric scraps so I am good there. Thanks so much for the fun video.
Hello Gayle! That was fun, can't wait to see the finished cover. That stabilizer is the best thing since sliced bread, I have a Bernina Embroidery machine and use it all the time it prevents the thread from sinking into plush items, also when stitching out words its best to use it. Very excited about this challenge looking forward to seeing what everyone comes up with. Have a good day, take care!
This is great! I think I’ve seen some of journals journal covers like this but never knew how it was done! Thank you. It is actually something I think I can do.
Love this! I also really like how everyone is doing the same thing in such different creative ways. So much inspiration and so many to learn from. Thank you for sharing!
Fascinating. Anyone tried this using double sided iron on interfacing between the fabric base and the pieces before stitching? Would the piece be too stiff for a cover? Too thick? Would it mess with the fraying? My mind is whirling… Made a vest with scrappy pieces in the late 60’s (yes, I’m old 😆) in a similar manner. Edges of all the fabrics frazzled wonderfully after washing a few times. (Memory blast from the past. 🙄) Enjoyed this Gayle! 💕💕

Looks great 😀👍. Can't wait to see it finished I know it's going to be gorgeous. Thanks for sharing! Namaste ✌️🐞🥰
Great fun! Easy and uses up scraps too! TFS the inspiration, Gayle!
Have you ever tried this with the water soluble instead of a fabric as an underlying layer? I love doing that, it gives even more texture
I am enjoying how different each of your projects are

Another word for what you did on the sewing machine would be “free form quilting”. Looks great. Always inspiring.
Or even free motion quilting
@@lucy7b Or confetti quilting. 🙂
