These tutorials are a great way for the average Joe to gain insight into what the various turbo components do. Thanks for educating the masses😝🤓😎!
Bret is a great teacher! I like the way MCM is making these videos, one concept at a time. All of us had to learn it somewhere in the past so it makes things great for beginners or outsiders. I've learnt more with the super gramps series than with any other car show.
Learned some things today; understanding how things work and not just what they do greatly improves decision making and diagnosis of potential issues significantly easier. Thanks Brett for giving up your time to share some knowledge with us.
Just weld the waste gate shut, unlimited boost baby
good luck whit that
Infinity boost!
Does this actually work of does the turbo tear itself to shreds?
The guys trolling. Don't weld your wastegate shut that just stupid. The only time you would do it is if you want to go form an internal to external gate without charging the turbo.
It not only tears itself to shreds but also I hear it can cause
long term brain damage to the vehicles occupants due to the massive Gs experienced
forcing ones brain into the back of your head. Serious stuff.
He explains this so well, you could not know anything about turbos and or cars and still understand what he is on about. What a guy! Thanks!
It is true,i had no idea about boost pressure at all,all i knew was bigger pressure, better, now i understand
Learned more about turbos in 5 min, than last semester in school. Keep up the good job mcm!
Great explanation. I have a much better understanding of waste gates and boost controllers now. I could listen to brett talk for hours.
These vids are such a great idea, i've always had N/A cars and was pretty clueless on turbo set-ups until now.
that a IS38 on the left. Shoutout the the guys on the MQB platform.
Awesome vid Brett, looking forward to what is to come!
Boost is good and in this episode, Brett explains what it is and how it works - MAD!
Would a boost controller have an effect on any turbo car, even a diesel such as a VAG 1.9 TDI 150 or....?
I too am interested in this, i have a kia Ceed CRDi and was wondering if a boost controller will make it MAD or just wreck the thing?
+DANCE GASMAN Yes, especially on Diesels.
probably not enough effect to offset the cost
The answer's in the video!
I literally knew nothing about turbos after buying an XR6t last week. Thanks for the killer vid man! Totally get it now cheers 🍻
Mate that car will be sick once you get it going
Really loving these Go Fast Brett videos, he makes it so easy to understand :D
Would be interesting to see one covering crankcase ventilation with turbos and such, hell.. even an episode even just covering the topic in general would be interesting.
I don't normally have the chance to work on turbos, but I really enjoy these technical videos.
I do plan on throwing a small turbo on one of my old Willys one of these years.
The old Corvairs had a different form of boost control. They had no wastegate or blow off valve, they used a small carburetor. A small side draft Carter YH (about 1 5/16" if memory serves). Which, on my 65 turbo promptly replaced with a Weber DCOE with 28mm chokes. The small carb not only controlled boost but make it very slow to build. It was a pain to tune but damn did it make power. Now with electronic control and FI it's amazing what turbos can do.
This was very informative and easy to understand! Thanks Brett! Please make more!
GFB = +500KnowledgeWatts being a mechanically inept owner of a GTD. I'm loving this series that explains the basics of turbo's.
That was a fantastic explanation. Love this series
Very well done video! Super quick and clear explanation of good ol turbskis
im loving this series. keep up the good work.
i love the retro intros for mcm and this show. it reminds me of car shows when i was a kid
Great video !
Please do a video regarding the advantages & disadvantages of air-to-air and air-to-water intercoolers
That was great! Loving this series!
One of the best explanation videos iv seen about this subject...
I love the GO FAST BRETT. It's so useful!
Such a simple but great video. Thank you!
Awesome VID!!!
Would you be able to increase more boost if upgrading the forge internal waste gate actuator as you can change the pressure springs
Love this vid series, already know most of the content but still love seeing it presented like this. Keep it up.
very good explanations on boost control rate 100%
Excellent job explaining complicated components
How can you possibly dislike this video best one they made in a while 👍😊
Damn Martin!, back at it again with them terribly funny/bad car puns LOL.
i learned all of that watching your old videos
Best video ever. Simple to the point , not a ton of fluff but still very entertaining. One thing I would like to see (and I see this with a lot of videos), an outro . if you could add a little Outro maybe five seconds of thank you to the viewers just to give me time to hit the like button.
Excellent explanation, job well done guys
These videos are great, love the info!
These videos are fantastic
This series is excellent.
This might sound rather narcissistic, but it's intended as a compliment. Even when I know everything on the subject (such as this video about boost controllers) I still REALLY enjoy watching the video. Just because it's presented and edited so well!
Great video!!! Answred a lot of questions and theory's Iv had
The video showed up at the perfect time! I think I have a faulty N75 valve on my 00' A6 2.7T, and this helped me pictures what's going on with my waste gate so much! (though it's still a bit different)
If you have a manual boost controller laying around you can plumb it in with the n75 valve. If you have the problem with the n75 valve and the boost controller together but not with the mbc on it's own you'll know what your problem is. At least on my friends 03 Audi TT 225hp that was the case.
I thought N75 was the one most people just deleted? I forget just now though so that could be well wrong...
Really cool series! You guys should do all sorts of things like this on cars with different experts, sort of like an MCM engineering explained.
In the 90s we used to put vacuum Ts into the wastegate line on the dodge 2.2l to up the boost for less than a dollar.
That shocking made me sub!! Brilliant
Well u can't get it any clearer than that thanks for your time and services to us all.
So what about the "double your wastegate pressure" rule when using a boost controller. If you have a 7psi Spring, with a boost controller you'll only achieve 14psi give or take. Or the differences in 3 vs 4port electronic boost controller solenoid me.
Hi Guys, could you do a quick episode on the difference between petrol and diesel turbos and how blow off valves (waste gates) affect each one. Thanks so much, love the channels and can't wait to see you guys on the Discovery Channel, been a fan since day one.
Nicely done. Thanks for the video.
ok when i drive 22psi overboost and 19psi holding boost with a electrical boost solenoid valve. what spring strength i needed for my wastegate?
good video, very helpful, I did not realize thats how manual boost controllers work, very interesting! I wonder what goes on inside there
Please keep doing these. Alot of these.
Hi I have a 2.0T that keeps going into limp mode, previous owner said that the reason for this is that the forks on the turbo or bent forward, what forks?
So, for example, if I have a 3Lb spring installed theh 3 psi is my minimum boost level. But it could be cranked up to 6Lb with the boost controller turned up to 100%?
Good job bro your videos really helps me thanks
Very well explained, thanks.
very good explanation
I have a 1997 Sr20det s14 silvia stock motor . It's only running around 6psi stock I want just a bit more power. Do I get a boost controller ? Do I need to remove restrictir pill ?
hey bret i have a ebay turbo at rhe moment i has no tag or mark on the compressor but on the exhaust side it has some letter and numbers A/R .48 i need to now how to identify it on the other side any help please?
I’m looking at putting a detroit 60 series turbo on a 351 Windsor. How hard would it be to control the boost on something like that?
This was an awesome video. Thanks.
Perfect. was wondering if I could lower boost. Now I know. Thanks.
Yes sis, can you plz help me out with my problem, I had 2009model c200 kompresor, and had troble code p0045, its say supercharger boost control solenoid circuit A open, where can I find the boost control solenoid, tnx
The electronic boost controller you talked about, is it similar to what other companies call a 3 port boost solenoid which is controlled by the ecu with a tune?
Hi how does the manual boost controller increase boost without turning the actuator up? Can it only reduce the pressure?
Hey love the video but can you guys do a video on how blow off valves work in line with boost controllers
Could that solenoid or vacuum valve make problems with turbo surging at half the throttle?
I have a 2.4JTDm and sometimes it works just fine, but sometimes it surges from 3 up to 6 gear around 1800-2000rpm (turbo reference is around 2000 I think).
Thanks...
i have a passat b5 1.8 Turbo , with aftermarket intake system would anyone not recommend that i manually use a boost controller to increase boost without EGR delete??
Very well explained video.... Keep it up
Hello, I'm seeking assistance with my BMW N55 engine, which is experiencing wastegate issues. Initially, the engine runs smoothly upon start-up. However, upon connecting an in/Hg gauge to the wastegate, it reads 5 in/Hg. Surprisingly, at idle around 700 RPM, the gauge jumps to 11 in/Hg. Any guidance on resolving this issue would be greatly appreciated.
this channel is awesome!
Great video guys!!
If you have boost creep or spikes can a controller turn it down so that when it spikes it hits the factory levels?
Great vid, very informative thanks heaps
I have a question, lets say my wastegate and actuator were not operating properly (staying stuck closed) causing an overboost situation under boost. By removing the restrictor pill ( in a 2 port boost solenoid) will make the car run to the minimum wastegate pressure? or will still be over boosting?
If i put a boost controller on a 2015 ford fiesta 1.6 tdci , will the engine detect that there is more air and inject more fuel ?
So, is there any way to have BOOST ONLY ON DEMAND.
I have to replace the engine of my Subaru Forester. They offer me 2.5XT and JDM STi engines but I simply dislike the turbo "kick"
I would love to install an engine, run it as NA and only apply the boost on demand, like a turbo "button" or switch. Not possible with a controller: Any other way?
Would a boost controller help boost creep stop or would i need an external wastegate for that?
So it actually builds up the pressure by first closing/fooling the 'sensor' and then opens, what makes the turbo spool turn faster. A bit like squeezing a water hose.
My boost on my 1992 toyota mr2 went out on me a few day ago, been trying to fix it. The turbo gauge is on 0 or 1 psi, help plz!?
if you change the turbo for upgrade, do you need to reprogram the ECU?
Sir, can I use boodt controller to control and reduce the boost to increase the mpg? I understand that will reduce the power and i am okay with it. Or any other suggestion to increase mpg in a N54 engine.
Really good thanks Brett!
hi. maybe you can help me. im having mazda 6 2.2 d with twin turbo and i have a lack of power under 3000 RPM when it ret to 3000 i can fill that is geting power. people told me to swap boost control sensor but i dont think that is a problem because waist air valve is constantly close. but when im cheking air pressure no MAP sensor under 3000 is much smaller then required. when go over 3000rpm it starts to get right air pressure. what can be a problem. my whole intake system was take a part and is clean from carbon ( i thought that this was a problem but no) MAP sensor works fine. is there a chance that my DPF filter is partially blocked and air pressure on exhaust is small so my turbo is not spinning fast enough. im not getting any errors but i think that my dpf burns byself very often. pls let me know if you have any ide. sorry for my english
can the wastegate be left alone without a reference? will it still bleed some of the exhaust gas without being locked shut in some way?
Can you use a boost controller to lower pressure say my internal wastegate can only go as low as 8psi can I use a boost controller to lower it to 4 psi
Hey man, i'm trying to install a MBC on my 03 saab 93, but I noticed I have to boost pressure solenoids... one is connected to my turbo & wastegate, and one to my intake manifold. Both are 3 port pierburgh boost pressure sensors.. I read that if you have one of those you just replace with the MBC... Is this possible to install if I have 2 of these Factory boost sensors? Will the 2nd one affect my MBC if I install it to the wastegate actuator?
Can you make a video or comment back. With the electronic turbos can you put and blow off value or a boost gauge connected up to it ? Pls reply
Best 5 mins of my life
What’s the difference between Boost pressure, boost pressure raw value, and boost pressure set point .. thanks for your time
I love this series already, MAAAAAAAAADD info
Sooo good! Clear as explication! Shot
if your car wont let you turn the boost up can i just disconnect the map sensor and run more boost without it?
if my wastegate is adjustable, is it better to adjust that, rather than a boost tee?
really well explained Really Nice
"I like big boost and I cannot lie" ...? Surprised nobody beat me to this one.
and you other brothers can't deny
so put sipmlp it acts like a thermostat but instead of working on temprature it works on pressure?
Thank You! This says it all!
So if I run a 7 pound spring in my wastegate that means that I will have 7 psi of boost going into my motor? I’ve heard that the wastegate has to do with drive pressure
Hi there.. Brilliant video..
May i ask u a question if u dont mind.
I have an Evo 8 and when i bought it, it already had some mods done to it.. It is rapid. It pulls hard when the turbo kicks in. But the one thing i notice is if I'm in 6th gear doing let's say 80mph and i put my accelerator most of the way down i feel like im losing boost from some where and the acceleration is patchy. I can hear like boost being released from some where? It never did this when i first bought the car. Looking at some of the receipts from previous owner i see that an upgraded actuator spring was installed. Could you shine some light on what might be the issue. It doesn't happen in 1-4th gear.. For your information i have a recirc value on it and not a dump valve..
can u put a manual boost controller on a turbo diesel engine. I have a Peugeot 207 1.6hdi 110 bhp would it work
