1998 was one of the most absurdly packed years of all time for videogames.
Went hard af
Yeah. And they forgot to mention Ocarina Of Time.
Great to see an older game get covered again. This is one of the best point and click adventures ever created. The atmosphere, artstyle, and characters are all fantastic. And you're right, Glottis is best boy.
Agreed
Except it's not a point and click
@@tbone9474 Well, you're not pointing with the mouse; you're pointing with Manny. It's very much of the genre despite the novel (for the genre) control scheme.
@boobah5643 still not clicking either as it's pressing enter :)
It's a puzzle adventure game with tank controls
@@tbone9474 at least with the remastered version, it can be controlled with a mouse.
One of the greatest games of all time. Introduced my daughter to it a couple of years ago and she was enthralled by the adventures of Manny and Co. The speed-demon Glottis is possibly my favourite supporting character in any game. Some of the puzzle's are almost impossible to solve even when you know the solution, but this is definitely an old-school game. The atmosphere, characters and setting make it worth persevering with!
This is one of the first games I ever played, and I replayed it several times throughout the last 20 years. Truly a masterpiece of its time with likable characters, unique art style, funny dialogue and challenging puzzles. Just looking at it brings me a lot of great memories, specially seeing Glottis and remembering the first time I managed to give him the work order to modify the car and trigger the epic cutscene.
@@ultimatums1 If dude's played a few hundred games, but this was number five or so, it'd be accurately described as 'one of the first.' How far, exactly, that phrase covers is arguable, sure, but it's a perfectly understandable description.
@@ultimatums1 Where does 'best' come in? We'd been discussing sequence, not quality. Or at least I was; I no longer have confidence that what you actually wrote reflects what you intended.
@@boobah5643 he is probably trolling, tbh... anyone vaguely familiar with the English language knows how common it is to use "one of the first" to point out the first few entries amongst a much larger group...
This comment here is my animal spirit. Same, dude
@@danixove2358 you mean the capybara or Glottis? 😂
I'm glad older titles are still getting the Honest Game Trailer treatment. It gives me hope that my many, many failures to get one made for SimCity will come to an end and I will bask in the glory of success!
Do SimCity!
SimCity! SimCity! SimCity!
I like this guy's moxie!
Get on it, Honest Trailers!
and also sam & max too!!!
@@hufferou812 I'm filled with disgust and an odd sense of foreboding.
Also Cities Skylines, Dwarf Fortress and Hyperdimension Neptunia! :D
@@jasonblalock4429 Hey,I like Sam and max!Sam and max is cool!
"Run, you pigeons! It's Robert Frost!"
"It says, 'I'M AT THE JUNKYARD, WOO WOO WOO WOO!'"
No, I didn't make it past that part without a game guide. I thought some of the puzzles were so convoluted that I gave up because I started feeling like the middle-man making a walkthrough's dream come true by playing the game for it.
I've been seeing stuff about this game since I was 15, but I was born in '92.
damn point and click moon logic :(
@@LTNetjak I'm a '76er. I enjoyed DotT, and the Dig. I did NOT enjoy Myst. I understand it's a classic, but WTF?
I believe I beat it without a guide but my memory is too fuzzy to remember so I'm just going to assume I cheated and used a guide. lol Cause more often than not I just look up guides, even in the old gamefaqs era.
Never spent much time playing it, but I've watched a playthrough. Not a let's-play or anything, dude just video-captured the whole game (minus the beating your head against a wall parts, because that'd be boring and repetitive to watch) and uploaded the result.
Say: "LLLLUUUUUUUUUMMMMBBBAAAAAGGGOOOOO LLLEEEEEEMMMOOOOOONAAADDEE!"
That said, thank you. Thank you so very much for finally doing one for Grim Fandango. This game is, was and will remain one of my alltime favourites.
As a little something to add: in year 2 you'll encounter an item you need at the tattoo parlor that when examined provides: The Rusty Anchor. Show it to Glottis first for the full song with the same name.
I still hope you'll tackle some SNES classic games too later. Terranigma, Chrono Trigger, RoboTrek, etc..
Love Grim Fandango, but yeah, this was a pretty tough PnC. And pretty lengthy as well. Tony Plana has a unique voice that i instantly recognize when he shows up in movies and TV. I always point this out of my friends who have no idea what the heck i'm talking about... hey, that's Manny!
also...
say, "It is pitch black. You are likely to be eaten by a grue."
Finally! This is one of the greatest games of all time.
agree
One of the best games I have ever played, VERY hard to complete without a guide, and some puzzles were just WTF even reading a guide I just wonder how in the hell people figured them out. But yeah solid game from a golden age of gaming.
It's convoluted but worth the frustration. ❤
My scythe; I like to keep it next to where my heart used to be.
I've played the remastered version a few months ago, it was a game I has pending since so many years, and although some parts are kind of frustrating, it's one of the best stories I've played in SO many years!
For Matthew Perry, please say: "You have to stop the q-tip when there's resistance!"
Okay, I was not expecting a Grim Fandango Honest Game Trailer like, ever, but thank you so much for covering an old favorite! 💖
One of the best games of all time. It's just an art piece
I never did get around to playing this game or really learning much about it, so I greatly appreciate this revisit of a retro game. Thanks!
HTs for Buffy and Grim Fandango in the same day!?
Thankyou Epic Voice Guy.

When the trailer actually starts.
The best grim reaper game ever!
Literally just started replaying this for the first time since I was a kid yesterday on steamdeck, and now this! Amazing timing. Happy Halloween!
Absolutely stellar "Starring" segment. Top tier punning!
Honestly, that puzzle with glottis spinning around... I literally just pressed buttons at random on that, to this day I've no idea how I got passed it as a kid. Fantastic game, they don't write them like that anymore
I remember spending a lot of time as a kid trying to figure out that one while pulling the levers at random.
I never heard of this game but finding out it beat so many other great classic games for the game of the year award is shocking. Make me want to try it out.
Development was lead by Tim Schafer, who also made Psychonauts.
Add to that list the first Baldurs Gate, Legend of Zelda Ocarina of time, Fallout 2, Might and Magic VI: The Mandate of Heaven, Unreal, Commandos: Behind Enemy Lines, Spyro the Dragon, Shogo: Mobile Armor Division, Heretic II, Oddworld: Abe's Exoddus
@AmokayII I will only baldurs gate and fallout 2. other then OoT, the rest are not worth mentioning compared to the other titles. and even then, OoT only makes it due to fan boys.
@@AmokayII Descent:Freespace, Banjo Kazooie, Thief, Starsiege Tribes...
98 was so packed with great games, it's kinda unfair. That being said, Grimm Fandango is one of my all time favorites.
next to do the legend of heroes series!!!(or cut it to 4 pieces trails in the sky 1-3 ,trails into azure and trails into zero , trails of cold steel and finally trails in the black and trails in the black 2: crimson sin.
This was on point and I salute (and love) you for that!
OMG! I was just watching one of my favourite RUclipsr's old Grim Fandango series and THIS came out. It's hilarious as always. Happy Halloween!
I wasn't expecting an OFMD reference! Now I demand a honest trailer for the series!
-Glottis! Do something!
-Ok: "AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA"
One of the best stories in an adventure game. That moment it all loops back and the noir amps up, its so good
Please, you must cover more of those classic jams!
This is great! Do Monkey Island and Space Quest!
I LOVED Grim Fandango! Thanks, Epic Voice Guy!
I love this game so much. Thanks for covering it
I loved this game so much as a child I bought it in 1998 right when it came out. Then as an adult to 100% it on steam.
I'm glad you did this.
If you have complete 1998 boxed PC edition in your collection then after 25 years it's currently trading slightly above $100.
OMG OMG OMG !!!!
You guys did Grim Fandango :D
Love it :D
Best "Starring" line up ever!
Perfect Halloween video, and absolultey hilarious.
I remember playing this back in the day on the old Packerd Bell 486.
One of my favorites of all times. Delicious to the last drop, and so, so funny! You can still play it, I did a couple of years ago and is still as fresh as back in the day. Although this time took me much less time because of game guides, yes XD
Man, I love Grim Fandango. Such a fun game.
Give me the chills with the line "Welcome to PlayPaintChill. You just gained honor +2 for following us ! ".
i literally gasped at the Our Flag Means Death reference! hope honest trailers does one for them!!
happy halloween epic voice guy & 25th anniversary grim fandango!!! :3
The games you mentioned from 98' were so good that they transformed their parent companies into giants of the gaming industry: Konami, Square Enix, Blizzard and Valve. Just wow!
OMG! An honest trailer from one of my favorite games of all time!
Finally!
Viva la revolución!
Have you done one for the first Psychonauts or Brutal Legend?
I just finished this game last night. It is indeed a Masterpiece.
Lol.. that end.. I literally never played it even when it was on all the magazines front and with a free CD trial.
In those days I played StarCraft, Monkey Island, Silent Service, Warcraft, and AoE.
Do a Honest Game Trailer for Hyperdimension Neptunia
+
Happy 25th anniversary Grim Fandango !
I played a demo of this that came with a magazine. Glory days.
Una de mis aventuras graficas favoritas ❤
Yes!, I can hear you Grim Fandango!
Do Honest Trailers for the Simcity/Cities Skylines games, Dwarf Fortress and Hyperdimension Neptunia!
Please say: "Nyah, your toast is ready!"
Please do an Honest game trailer on the touhou project games please?
Do an Honest Trailer for the original Amnesia series!
I wish that point and click adventure games would make a comeback. I played this game with my dad when I was younger and not too long ago I played the remastered version on the PS4. It's one of the greatest adventure titles ever made. It isn't easy to finish without checking a walkthrough though! Some parts really stand out where you can easily get completely stuck. The solution to certain puzzles in games like this can be very strange sometimes, but I see that as giving the experience some extra charm even if it can frustrate the hell out of you haha.
What's funny is at the time I was like "Thank god the puzzles are easier than Discworld."
Funny enough, I am one of those “did it raw, no guide” guys from its original release…….and I am still enjoying my job in IT…..
…and now I’m questioning how Epic Voice Guy was able to predict that…..
One of the finest games ever made
Ah, Grim Fandango, all the good memories.
HAHA YES! I absolutely love this game and it’s been ages since I’ve seen anyone covering it
So many good, frustrating memories
Gamespot actually had two games of the year for consoles and PC in 1998. The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time won for consoles that year, because of course it did. It's still hilarious that they chose Grim Fandango for PC over Starcraft, Baldur's Gate, Half Life and Fallout 2.
Top game! I was thinking about it the other day and was wondering if theres is 4k remake.
2018 HD remaster on Steam/GoG/etc.
@@Sparkbomber I know about that one.
You guys should totally do a vid for Final Fantasy Tactics.
Please say "Sworn enemies, you shall be defeated, Sky Dragon Slash"
Please do Puzzle Bubble! Also, where's that sweet Jagged Alliance 3 trailer?
Best Honest Game Trailer ever!!! ❤
what a story, what a masterpiece...
To be fair: 1998 was still in that era when Gamespot gave out separate GOTY awards for console and PC. While GF did beat Half-Life and StarCraft, it was Ocarina that beat MGS and FFT.
i just had flashbacks, i LOVED the lucas arts old school games
i don't think i actually ever finished this i think i got stuck at a point, but i liked it a lot
hahaha I did use guides when I was stuck, but I remember this game to be hilarious. Good times.
say "Did you see that, Zach?! Clear as a crisp spring morning! F K... In the coffee!"
Well, looks like it’s time to play this
When the season needed HT the most, they chose the best game ever.
Please say, "My name is Manny Calavera. I'm your new travel agent."
It was actually Gamespot's *PC* Game of the Year for 1998, which at least excludes it from comparison to Ocarina of Time (the console GOTY), Metal Gear Solid, Banjo Kazooie, Spyro, Parasite Even, Xenogears, and all of the other great console releases of 1998. Though I still have a hard time believing it was more appealing than Half-Life, StarCraft, Thief: The Dark Project, and Baldur's Gate. Those games all built lasting legacies while Grim Fandango's most noteworthy effect on the future was leveraging Tim Schafer to make more popular unrelated games.
I've played Grim Fandango, Sam & Max Hit the Road, and Full Throttle. All great games.
Please say: "Damn son where'd you find this!?"
one of mt favorite games tbh
Speaking of games with spooky elements, when are you finally going to do the great Conker's Bad Fur Day?
First game that made me cry
also, I'm pretty sure Legend of Zelda: Ocrina of Time came out in 1998 also... Happy Spooky Day Y'all!!
Please say “Do it Rockapella!”
(And also please do an Honest Game Trailer for the Carmen Sandiego series)
This was one of the last few adventure games I completed before I gained access to the internet and the genre was ruined for me with walkthroughs... (I'm weak ok)
I don't remember much about the game, but I do remember I had less trouble with this one than some of the others that were out around the same time...
You didn't mention the horrible tank controls and the new point & click interface from the remaster which gives it a whole new better experience. It also looks very nice in the remaster :P
No Joke. Was still one of the best games release in the late 90's. Like, in an era of weird and wacky PC games. it was an absolute amazing hit. I cannot begin to tell people how much I wish I still had-
A. A PC with a Disk drive.
B. The old Binder full of PC disks.
There was just something magical about Lucas games and other similar things. Back when game bundle games were full of actually fun games and weren't just Trash scams.
Please say "Sound the Great Unsounded! Beat at the gods' door and hear it ring hollow!"
Grim Fandango is legitimately better than all those other games. Way more cinematic than MGS, for as often as it's lauded as such. I'm grabbing my torch because the '98 game you neglicted to say was Ocarina of Time.
Now that you have done an old game like this, PLEASE do Sly Cooper!!!
I got the "enhanced edition" on Steam, got soft locked by an ancient bug, lost an hour of progress and uninstalled. Also puzzles make very little sense
YESSSS! I can hear u Grim FanDANGOOO!
Please do Simon The Sorcerer or The Feeble Files
Do a Manny impression and say "That's not on fire."
Thank you Honest Trailers! One of my all-time favorites. Beyond the plot, which is a bit convoluted, this game had such a sense of adventure, a feeling of passage of time, a true afterlife odyssey. Manny really goes through Purgatory and back to help his dame!
Make an Honest Trailer for Super Mario Bros. Wonder
