  • Virginie Viard bows out at Chanel - The house confirmed her departure to Vogue Business on Wednesday
    After 30 years, including the last five years as artistic director, Virginie Viard is exiting Chanel. The house confirmed her departure to Vogue Business on Wednesday.
    “Chanel confirms the departure of Virginie Viard after a rich collaboration of five years as artistic director of fashion collections, during which she was able to renew the codes of the house while respecting the creative heritage of Chanel, and almost 30 years within the house,” the house said in a statement. “A new creative organisation will be announced in due course. Chanel would like to thank Virginie Viard for her remarkable contribution to Chanel’s fashion, creativity and vitality.”
    Viard was appointed artistic director in 2019 after Karl Lagerfeld passed away. The haute couture Autumn/Winter 2024/25 collection will be presented as planned on 25 June at the Opéra Garnier.

    All couture has fallen. At one time you could spot he quality of construction/tailoring and quality fabric from miles away. There are alot of plastic shower curtains now.

    Chanel is gamine girly and old lady girly, not sexy womanly ( Versace, Cavalli, D&G, Tom Ford ) not feminine womanly ( Nina Ricci, Lanvin ) not sporty girly ( Tod's, Calvin Klein ). A young child could dress the same way as her grandmother, as neither is supposed to be overtly sexy, but wear bright colors, prints, frills, flounces, camellia brooches, loads of costume jewelry, colorful makeup, ballet shoes - the Chanel look. Looking "child like " is very East Asian look for women.

    Imagine if hodakova got the gig! That would really be amazing… I’m sure if coco Chanel were still walking this earth she would be for not just comfort but conscience… she was a disrupter & that’s what this huge house needs a female designer prepared to disrupt!

      Um, you know Coco was a full blown Nazi, right? Like, had an SS Agent number and everything? She tried to have her Jewish business partners tossed in a concentration camp. She'd let quality slip for the right price.

    So maybe I am crazy, but I believe that Chanel sold more with someone "lacking the dream" because people like luxury items but are too worried to wear unusual or bold items. So a 300$ white basic (insert any luxury brand) t-shirt it is.

    I don't see how the past "controversy" of Galliano would omit him from going to Chanel. (Not that he'd be interested in the post.) For him it seems like it would be more of what he does at Mariegla, re-interpretation of a firmly established design philosophy). Coco was literally in bed with members of the Nazi party.
    I bought an ounce of Chanel No.5 in 1978 at the Fragonard factory and never since. I recently had a sniff and it made me ill. ALL of these synthetic smells are so toxic. So I don't bother with any of them anymore.

    re:bags and shoes ...if I find comfortable shoes that are well made, I buy several colors. If bags are secure, functional and easy to carry I will get in in more than one color.

    I have always thought Chanel was overrated, because it only flatters one very specific lanky female body type. It is high time as a culture we start to look up to brands that can design for more diversity.

      My obsession with *condup* fakes is beyond me. The real root of it is that when you don't have a luxury item, it looks like you do. What does this say about those who are so eager to achieve this look? For them it's not about the quality of the bag, it's about the printed label...weird.

    I'm sad to see this because it looks like VV was trying boho-fy chanel a little bit while still designing for the twee sensibilities that are in the dna of the brand.
    Its not her fault that there are too many collections and quality has diminished.
    It's wild to me that after all the money they've made from VV's designs, she would leave. I wish her well.

    Well believe it or not I buy handbags the way you said you would if you were a chick buying them. I do not have the same bag in various colors. I like to spread my $$ around. I do have a couple of LV’s but they are all different and the same goes for my Gucci bags. Then I throw in a couple of mid tier lux like Mulberry, and even give a new designer a chance with Brandon Blackwell. In all I will say I am a small time collector of sorts with about 50 bags and that includes some old gems I bought back in the day from Prada, the old Marc Jacobs an many others. No Chanel for me except a bumb bag purchased in Japan. I will say that the Chanel Classic Jumbo flaps are not holding value…you can easily purchase on for 7k US now….people are wising up.

    I absolutely agree Marc Jacobs or John Galliano both have the virtuosity to do something brilliant… however both these truly wonderful designers have their own babies… & John is brilliant at Margiela with his innovation & educating the public about upcycling… Marc is doing brilliant things with his own brand & has the freedom to do so, why would he trade this for Chanel? Jacquemus is quite boring & not at all innovative in my personal opinion… surely they need more than just more tweed tat & irritating marketing campaigns! Do be aware that us grandmas do want something more than buttoned up boxy tweed worn over denim with smatterings of camellias & gold chains. I love Hussein Chalayan but he has disappeared so yes I agree Jeremy Scott does do too much kitch at moschino & it’s too obvious…

    Thanks for the economic history. I think that she was number 2 on purpose like many women who carry the load 😢 for the career without getting due publicity of #1 as deserved. Would the public 30 years ago have accepted another “genius woman” at the creative helm. Me too movement had not infused 😅the fashion industry yet. I hope she retires in order to write books about her career, fashion, the future. Our public is in crisis

      I don’t think we did, it’s mainly because he’s settled at Prada and it would be strange for him to have successfully settled into a Prada role only to leave. Prada is on top right now and their financial performance + growth is at an all time high. Also, the Chanel aesthetic is the furthest from what Raf does.

    • @vs_188
      @vs_188 7 дней назад

      That's very valid but I just think it's so interesting he never came up because his departures at both Jail Sander and Dior both came at times when he was at his most beloved at the respective brands.
      He's also extremely adaptive to a houses codes while both modernizing the aesthetic and incorporating his own vision.

      Also lol at autocorrect not recognizing "Jil" and sneaking in "Jail Sander" 😅

    • @FashionRoadman
      @FashionRoadman  7 дней назад +1

      @@vs_188 haha autocorrect needs a fashion revamp. Maybe he could adapt to the Chanel aesthetic but in the cases of Jil Sander, Calvin Klein & Prada where he has worked - they are brands known for a very minimal aesthetic that means there wasn’t too much adapting needed on his end. Dior was probably the biggest adjustment for him so it’s a good case study for Chanel.

    Additionally I see Chanel flaps every where now a days and quite frankly the far majority of the women I see carrying them have absolutely no sense of fashion. Very vanilla dressing which is another reason I refuse to be a Chanel sheep!
