To be fair, the majority of those pistols would have been melted for scrap if they hadn't been converted to use .45 ACP.. The British never made a lot of .455 Webley, to the point that Canadian mounties in the western regions actually used American-supplied .45 Long Colt ammunition because it was too much trouble to bring in .455 Webley. Once the British military switched to .38, many makers shifted their production accordingly, making it even more difficult to procure. Without the conversion, it is doubtful these guns could have sold well enough in the hyper-competitive American market to be around now for us to enjoy. Better a converted gun that we can admire and even restore than razor blades rusting in a landfill.
No choice. The original ammunition for the bloody gun was a rare species. I believe there was the joke about the .455 cartridge by policemen given webleys as a service firearm.
They're almost all converted. .455 ammo is difficult to find and cost-prohibitive. You can fire .45 auto-rim in an unconverted gun or .45 ACP in a shaved gun with moon clips. Accuracy is largely uncompromised and it gives you a chance to fire a fine, rugged old gun that would otherwise be a safe queen. You do have to reload, though, as .45 ammo is far too powerful for the old Webley cylinders to accommodate.
As a young patrolman in the 1980s I purchased a S&W 25-2 which used .45 acp with moon clips. I had the barrel cut to 5" and magnaported. I can confirm that wheel gun with moonclips was deadly accurate, easy and fast to reload and recoil was very manageable due to the revolvers weight and magnaport. I wish I still hat that beautiful beast.
Great video. One of my troopers found a Webley during a SSE in Afghanistan. Don't know whatever happened to it but while we were in country we had a lot of fun with it whenever we found ammo for it.
Nice Video! I have one MK VI shooting .455 Eley and two Colt New Service in .455 as well. I load with .454 semi wadcutters and with the original 265 gr hollow base round nose. I've had very good results with Black Powder in .45 Colt and plan on trying that with the .455. The saving grace for the shaved Webley's is the fact that the 45acp is smaller and does not build up the pressure it would with a tighter bore. However, properly sized lead bullets with a low-pressure load will give much better accuracy. There is zero reason for shooting anything warmer than the old original loads and a couple of good reasons for loading a little less.
Very nice. This is quickly becoming one of my favorite channels. The videos are short, unique, visually pleasing, and informative. Keep it like that and you'll grow fast! Too many 20-30+ minute videos out there...ain't got time for that!
Bit of Webley love you've earned my subscription. Love the fact that you're actually being smart and loading that old girl with handloaded ammo that is appropriate for it not 45 auto.
Good Man, dropping the chamber pressure down to be safe in the old girl. Most people don't know that the .455 is only a 14k psi load but standard 45 acp can be up to 21k psi.
John Parrish yeah it scares me that people use 45ACP ball. When I first got this thing, it came with reloads and factory 45ACP loads. I was worried about the revolver but the lockup was tighter than a bank vault... and bam, t was a shooter with 255gr .454 bullets loaded to 650-680fps.
I know purists hate to see a shaved cylinder, but those tactical reloads were smartly done. If you want to play with original .455 there's a guy on ebay selling spacer moons that close up the gap.
Henry, nice shooting. My uncle used the .455 in WW2 (Australian Army; he was a despatch rider. Oz got older british stock when they upgraded to .38). His comment was that they would stop a charging bull at 5 yards, but you wouldn’t hit it at 10. Which meant he must have been very up close and personal to the enemy (north africa, Greece, Egypt, Lebanon, Syria, New Guinea) to learn of its lethality. With the benefit of hindsight & some research I now know he went into action with insufficient training. Greetings from Canberra
My god. Production quality and update rates just keep getting better and better. New gun favorite channel for sure. Is there anyway you can do a PTR-91 video anytime soon? Scar 17s would be cool in the new video format you guys use! Keep it up.
Pretty impressive wheelgun shooting- especially that double-action while moving. Pretty impressive for a gun that's over a century old! Keep up the great videos!
Looked at this again after a few years and am even more impressed with how Henry handled the old Webley. That double action trigger is not easy to master!
Very cool. Always found the top load revolvers to be something special. It's absolutely amazing how quality manufacturing holds up, much like the 1911. Great double action shooting sir!
As it happens I'm watching the peaky blinders seasons (story set in Birmingham 1919-22) right now and you see the webley mk IV all the time. I'm surprised it performs that good. Thanks for this guys. You have definitely become the most interesting gun channel on yt. Keep it up!
I use .45 auto rim in mine... and I have a speed loader... so I can load fast and have the pretty brass rain! My Webley, however, is much older, 1892. Has a 4-inch barrel and was originally built for black powder but later upgraded and reproofed for smokeless. Yeah, you have to load 'em back to much lower pressures. Mine doesn't shoot that well, especially with me behind it. Nice channel! Just discovered it.
Shooting revolvers double action is a skill that takes a bit of work, but it's very rewarding. I used to do bowling pin shoots with a Ruger GP100 before I moved to the US. I only once shot a Webley and I only remember enjoying the novelty, and that was in England before I emigrated 21 years ago.
