    When I first heard about this game after playing Rebirth 1, I wasn't sure if I wanted to even play it. Everyone said it was pretty bad. But after watching the intro video, I found myself strangely wanting to play the game more and more, until I finally caved and bought a used ps3 as well as a copy of the game. I played through the entire thing, getting the basic ending and then the true ending.
    And you know what? Despite all its faults and limitations, this game ended up being one of my favorites right alongside Rebirth 1 and Megadimension.
    I was saddened upon getting this ending and reading the epilogue, knowing that Nep and Co. lived their lives until passing away from old age. It would've been nice if they had added some art of the gang all grown up after completing the true ending.

      well technically Vert and Noire were about as adult as they can get where you could expect fashion changes, Neptune as an adult we'd get a few years later in VII in terms of design at least.

      Idea Factory was originally intending this to be just a small-budget standalone game. They weren't expecting to make a sequel until fans came up and thus mk2 was created, starting the main series, but leaving this one out of continuity because of it's True Ending.
      Pretty much this game (the first one) is labeled the "Super Dimension" while mk2 onward is the "Hyper Dimension". It deserves more praise than what it gets, honestly.

    To the people wondering why Mk2 is a reboot, it's because they didn't think this game would sell very well, neither that the characters would get so much love. So the true ending put an end to the series, it's funny that now Neptunia is the icon of IF/CH when back in its day was treated as game that was going to be forgotten soon by everyone.
    Maybe it's just me but I think this could be the reason as why they keep releasing spin-offs and not any main line game since 2015. The series wasn't meant to have a long story development and now they don't know how to continue it.

    • @SatoshiMatrix1
      @SatoshiMatrix1  3 года назад +1

      The same story with Square back in the late 80's. They had a series of games that hadn't been as popular as they hoped, and so they wanted to make one final game. A fantasy game. So they sort of ironically named it Final Fantasy. The rest is history.
      As far as spin offs...well, that's really been the case since 2013. The Vita years were all spent with enhanced remakes/ports of the PS3 trilogy and a lot of spin offs, and then VII. Which then got it's own enhanced remake/port. I'm hopeful Compile Heart will do another mainline game in 2021 and I'm hopeful that they'll make the Switch the target console. Sony has turned very converative in recent years disallowing the playful ecchi the series embraces and it's a real shame.

      @@SatoshiMatrix1 I think the transition to the Switch will take some time, it seems the Neptunia team has good development experience only for Sony platforms. The Switch ports are not optimized and the Steam releases had some graphic issues with some cards if I remember correctly, even to this day Virtual Stars has only been released for the PS4.
      Good point about Square, they knew how to keep the series alive and clarifying that each game has its own universe with its unique story, they begam to make exceptions since FFX but that's another story. On the contrary, CH has made the series confusing for the newcomers with the spin-offs, lack of mainline games and all the dimensions (Hyper, Ultra, etc.)

      @@zone-guy-21389 Yeah. It totally worked out during the Vita era. I was an early adopter of the Vita and loved getting new Neptunia games what felt like constantly. But Sony did everything they could do to deny the Vita a future, with only the PS4 left. I felt that Neptunia had proven much better suited on a handheld than a console, as you don't need a high-end platform to do what Neptunia is best at - visual novel talking heads and basic 3D dungeons and battles.
      I totally agree that Compile Heart has been committed to Sony. But I think that's also now proving to be a mistake both from a business point of view considering how massively successful the Switch is and also from a gamer's perspective since Sony has cracked down on ecchi content, including Neptunia. The PS4 version of Super Neptunia RPG is considerably censored and thus the Switch version is much better.
      I wish this were not the case. I'd love for Neptunia to remain a Sony third party property. But I think its well beyond time to jump ship.

      This is the main problem with AAA companies, theyre not willing to try things, and just dont accept that fact that you can never know whats gona sell. Even if you make a perfect game, which reviewers love if the economy crashes and a war starts the week it was released youre not geting your return on investment and its completely outside of your control. Its actually safer to take 20% of the budget and staff of a many million dolar game and have them make 2 indie games on the side cos maybe youll get a great hit, and its not like the 20% less budget is gona make the big game any worse really.
      Also I got in to Neptunia 6 months ago and I never found it confusing at all. The many dimensions and cannons are actually awesome for when you bough ship Nepnowa and also have them bough as your waifu seperatly.

    This ending made me sad and annoyed. It could've ended on a more happier note than that. Like saying how they lived out their lives while not explicitly saying they died.
    And yes, I'm aware that they _willingly_ gave up their immortality to be with their friends. It's kinda beautiful in a way, but it still saddens me. Especially since no one except Histoire will know about the Console War and about Neptune and friends' journey. Just a bummer. 😔

    • @SatoshiMatrix1
      @SatoshiMatrix1  5 лет назад +5

      I do see what you're saying, but the game opens and ends from the point of view of Histoire, whom is eternal. All that happened for her was the mere turn of a page of history.
      But it's totally a culture attitude you're bringing to your conclusion. While western stories are almost always tied up in a neat bow, Japanese people _love_ bittersweet endings. Novels, manga, anime, movies, games. Anything that revolves but acknowledges the passage of time, which yes, does often lead to the protagonist's death. This is a very common element in Japanese storytelling.
      Life is a cycle, and death is part of that. To acknowledge that in fiction is to be able to more easily accept it in reality, which we have no control over. This is the Japanese way of thinking.

      I guess it just came as more of a shock to me that it would have the kind of deep ending you described in a kind of laid-back, satirical game, like this.
      Though, on a slightly brighter note, I'd like to think that she could be telling this story to a potential new goddess, so as to avoid a repeat of history. Then at least another person would live on with the knowledge of what Neptune and her friends did.

    • @SatoshiMatrix1
      @SatoshiMatrix1  3 года назад +2

      I can see why you would think this, but it's incorrect for several reasons.
      First, the original Neptunia is a canon unto itself. The Neptunia games employ a form of moe string theory where there are multiple dimensions, each with the same general cast of characters, but different circumstances in each dimension. A lot like the 90s sci-fi show Sliders.
      The Neptune, Noire, Vert Blanc and others in Mk2 are _not_ the Neptune, Noire, Vert, Blanc and others here. Under the true ending of the original game, the goddesses give up their powers to Historie, live the rest of their lives as humans, and finally pass away peacefully. The CPU Candidates don't exist in this dimension.
      Secondly, this was written when Hyperdimension Neptunia was meant to be a one-off, not a franchise. The concept of the CPU Candidates wasn't invented yet for there to be any sly reference to them.
      The only connected via canon Neptunia games are Mk2/Re;Birth2 > Victory/Re;Birth3 > VII/VIIR. All of the others take place in totally disconnected, separate dimensions.

      @@SatoshiMatrix1 Yeah I know, but back at that time I didn't know much, I just thought that playing the first, mk2 and Victory was okay but I should've done more researches because I felt really confused and I realized mk2 wasn't a dorect sequel to the first only when the chirper event that explained how Neptune and Nepgear met IF and Compa.
      Though I think Re;birth 1 was kinda a wasted opportunity to integrate it with the rest of the games but at the same time I understand that maybe after saying multiple times about how Neptune met IF and Compa and other things if would've been difficult.

It's entirely possible the Compa and IF of that Hyperdimension met Neptune in similar circumstances since they are afterall, the same people, just not those same versions of themselves from the OG Hyperdimension. Sting theory is confusing but hey, it is what it is.

    • @amordelohn_
      @amordelohn_ 3 года назад

      @@SatoshiMatrix1 Well by now everything in Neptunia is super confusing. But yeah I kinda consider the superdimension character as the "same" as the Hyperdimension characters, differently from what I think about the Ultradimension characters who feel really different from they're counterparts. If I'm not wrong, in the Hyperdimension IF and Compa met Neptune when she fell from the Planeptune tower.

    • @metro0612
      @metro0612 3 года назад +1

      @@amordelohn_ It's not really confusing.
      The first game's story falls under its own continuity from beginning to end. Mk2 onward has a somewhat similar history, but the way things happened is divorced from the first game altogether. You can pinpoint this by the fact that Arfoire was the previous Goddess in the first game, while in the second game she was the closest thing the series had to a Satan equivalent, which is quite the opposite to who she is in this game.
      We can assume that the Neptune in the "Hyper Dimension" continuity (mk2, Victory and Megadimension) met Compa and IF under similar circumstances during this continuity's version of the Console War, but given where mk2 starts, we can assume that Neptune and the others didn't give up their immortality. The Hyper Dimension's depiction of the first game's story is up for speculation. As for their Ultra Dimension counterparts, from what I can remember, Noire, Vert and Blanc's Ultra Dimension counterparts are meant to be their "younger" selves, but this time with a radically different history altogether, with Plutia having taken Neptune's place as Planeptune's Goddess in this reality. If you want a straight-up, shortened explanation, then...
      Super Dimension > The first game and Re;Birth1
      Hyper Dimension > mk2/Re;Birth2, Victory/Re;Birth3 & Neptunia VII/VIIR
      Ultra Dimension > Shown in Victory/Re;Birth3
      Then you have the spin-offs, which opens whole different cans of worms on their own.

      There's no debating that Re;Birth 1 is a better game than the original, but there are so many numerous differences with it's plot that it stands parallel to the original game rather than being a total replacement of it. It's a lot more refined, but it isn't always better. There are numerous plot threads that simply don't exist in Re;Birth 1, and only a few that Re;Birth 1 adds that weren't in the original.
      The true ending of both games are also radically different. Here, Arfoire is killed, but leaves behind her believers who spread monsters before the remaining CPUs decide to give up being goddesses and become mortal, and all eventually die, leaving only Historire in Celestia with any first hand living memory of Neptune and the others.
      Re;Birth 1 did a more feel-good true ending with none of these elements, totally brushing aside the little detail of Arfore's followers and instead focusing on purifying her to her original state.
      it doesn't really replace the original game for me. I like both of them for different reasons.
