    Love this! I just made a TikTok on this exact topic just yesterday. Super informative.
    I remember when I was in middle school, one of my aunts had purchased matching purses for my sister and I, except my sisters was a neutral brown and mine was a bright candy apple red. At the time, I was deep in the throes of an edgy emo goth phase, and my sister was very bright and colorful, so I couldn’t understand why she seemed to have gotten our taste mixed up. I was deeply socially anxious and dressed in nothing but black, gray, and neutrals, so bright extroverted red was the very last thing I wanted to carry around at that time.
    Finally, my aunt told me that she got me the red one because she thought I would be able to see it better and it might help me find it faster. I remember feeling so disheartened in that moment, because I had never had any difficulty finding my purse before, nor have I ever expressed any difficulties along those lines to anybody else . She had made an assumption about what problems I experienced and what accommodations would help me, and instead of tailoring my gift to who I was as a person, she focused exclusively on my disability and got me something that anyone who’d seen my wardrobe could have told her I wouldn’t have liked. That was one of the first in a long string of moments that eventually made me understand that that particular aunt often viewed me as a walking embodiment of blindness, instead of the anime loving goth teenager that just so happened to be blind that I was.
    In the end, my sister and I ended up swapping purses with each other when we got home, but that experience definitely left an impression on my 13 year old self.

      Goodness. That's rough. I'm glad your sister was wiling to swap with you. Sometimes people think too much when it's more about the person as a whole not their disability.

      I can absolutely relate to this story. I have had family members who give me presents based on what they think I should have because I am blind and not what I want as a person. I'm glad you and your sister were able to trade purses, but I'm sorry you had that experience… Because it definitely leaves an impression and a bad taste. Family members!

    Although it wasn’t insensitive to me. I thought it was really funny. My friend knows I joke about my vision all the time so she had a book specifically printed in 8 point font to be funny. Personally something like that is really good because it’s shows me that my friends are comfortable with my disability like me. I still have that book today even though I can’t read it on my own I still love it.

      So long as you are both laughing at the joke I think it's great to poke fun at ourselves and our disabilities. :)

    I had to learn braille as a kid, and I hated it and didn't want to do it (I don't use it but appreciate it now), and my parents got me a braille book for Christmas that year, and I cried! I thought it was going to be a video game console lol!

    • @UnsightlyOpinions
      @UnsightlyOpinions  Год назад +1

      That must have been such a horrible let down. They probably spent as much on that one book as they would have on a game console too. I totally feel you, when I started learning braille it felt tortuous. I hated every minute of it. Love it now though and couldn't do without it. So funny how things change!

    As always, this was great. I have always struggled with people giving me gifts, especially family members. I think the worst thing I have ever gotten from anyone was a pair of sunglasses. They were ugly! Well, they weren't ugly to others, but they were to me, because the intent behind it was that I needed to wear them to cover my eyes. Apparently they were bought from Macy's or some fancy store. I wore them for six years, and then when I moved out on my own, I smash them to pieces. Bye-bye!
    So because of my many bad experiences, I am super sensitive to buying presents for others. If I don't know the person or anything about them, I will give them a gift card or ask in a roundabout way. I really think gifts are utterly useless if you are just buying them without thought. But hey, you know what my favorite gift currently is? A new puppy! Someone please give me another puppy! Just kidding. Not a total surprise puppy, I would want to pick him or her out, and I have specific breeders in mind, but… I want another puppy! I already have two dogs, and my goodness, raising a puppy is so much work! But that's why I want one! The one I am currently raising isn't mine to keep, so… Oh well.

    • @UnsightlyOpinions
      @UnsightlyOpinions  Год назад +1

      I completely understand about the sunglasses. I have received many an ugly pair. Although, I’m not sure that they were intended for me to cover my eyes. I’m sorry that people told you that your eyes didn’t deserve to be seen.
      And I hope you get your new puppy! 🐶🐶🐶

      @@UnsightlyOpinions it has taken me many years to finally come to the conclusion that I can wear sunglasses if I pick them out.
      So I have a puppy who is staying with me for a couple of weeks. But I'm also watching her four siblings for this weekend because her breeder needs a huge break and is on a mini vacation. Love all the puppies, but seven dogs in my little place for more than two days is a bit much. But oh puppies!

    The most insensitive thing I would say I’ve gotten was print cards with cursive. I cannot read them because I do not know how to read cursive because I’ve never been good at cursive and on top of that the writing small insult at that point, it’s either I ask someone or I just say thank you for the card and not know what it says, my favorite things that I’ve gotten are a large print card, Abril card, gift cards, money, stuff for when I moved out to be independent

    • @UnsightlyOpinions
      @UnsightlyOpinions  Год назад +1

      They attempted to teach me to read cursive when I was in elementary school and had more vision. It was a lost cause. haha It looks like a snoopy mess. I'm so glad that's not really a thing anymore. I'm glad someone got you a card you could actually read! I do find it frustrating as well when folks give me a printed card. I just received 3 yesterday!

    I always consider the recipient when selecting a gift. If I don't know them that well I try to find out more. If I do know them well I all ready have a pretty good idea of what they will like. I also tend to make quality hand made items. I knit so I've made family several sweaters in the past. I also make candies and baked goods and I know what food allergies and dietary requirements my gift recipients have and tailor ingredients and recipes to match. Chocolate allergy? I substitute carob powder. Diabetic and/or gluten allergy I substitute coconut flour for wheat flour. Sometimes you just have to get to know the person a bit.

      My pleasure! Hmmm I am really open to anything and I wouldn't care if someone got me nothing, but anything that helps me navigate life more efficiently is always appreciated - whether it's self care, a fun kitchen gadget, or just a gift card. I love when someone up cycles something that otherwise wouldn't be used.
