I thought of an example that validates the theory of Roderick's unborn child returning to kill its father. In Arthurian legend, Arthur sires a son with his sister, Morgana. His son, Mordred, returns later to destroy the kingdom his father has built. Poe already uses Arthurian legend in the tale with the Lancelot story, so he may have had Arthur's own incestuous family in mind.
I found your discussion very intriguing and interesting I must add that our voice is incredibly relaxing and you should really look into creating ASMR videos
I feel that it is obvious that Roderick wants to rid his sister, but for the good of making sure his family doesn't continue to have diseases caused by incest. To me it is apparent that the family members marry into their own family, as the conditions Roderick faces are caused by incest. He is trying to rid his sister so that they don't marry to give birth to more children which will suffer the same conditions. Also, I feel it important to understand that this is Gothic Literature. This is just my take, just wanted to put it out there.
I had just finished reading the romantic dreary little piece of Poe's (which had confused me) completely got lost in it. I then looked it up on here and found your video. It helped me understand it alot more. Thanks And i would've thought his sister of more of a ghost like revenge for something her twin had done than anything else. Or Usher became mad in the head at his sister, last family alive, was pronounced dead. Thanks again and loved the video
“Whom enter’eth here in, a conqueror hath bin. Whom slay’eth the dragon the shield he shall win.” … or something like that, as I recall. I imagine this could be Poe’s own reality that he realized he would probably never have a kid and the family name, or crest on the shield, would probably not perpetuate. The idea of winning the shield (having a kid) appears to be a hope of his. Here, Roderick Usher is in the same position.
