I didn't notice that, either, but maybe that's because I've grown used to characters having more than one tone through my Japanese (I have lived in Japan for most of my life). Funniest thing is that a character having two different pronunciations in Chinese is considered a quirk or just not very common... but if you spend some time in Japanese, you'd be hard pressed to find a character with less than 3 separate pronunciations! Hanzi are a lot easier than Kanji, even if some of them are identical in appearance... though it does mean learning more Hanzi overall...

Thank you for the great videos! . When I read a Chinese dictionary, it seems that many Hanzi have a different pronunciation when they are used as surnames.
Kind of disappointed that 了wasn't mentioned. I still don't know when it's not pronounced as 'le'. Good video and very helpful nevertheless - thank you 😊
Your pronunciation of character is correct. Good. "caricature" sounds like this "care uh cat chure". If you were a kid i would teach it "care a cat shure" but its CH not SH. Character sounds like "care act er" or "care ack ter". Either is fine.
even though character starts ch that ch sounds like K. English spelling irregularities reflect the language the word comes from. English doesn't nativize all the words it importes. French words spell like the French, German words spell like in German (most English is anglo-saxon or french) Russian words likewise spelled like in Russia but transliterated regularly. Once you know that the spelling irregularities will help you become a better polyglot. Name a word in English it's either Germanic, French, or imported from any other country on earth. But they ALWAYS keep the source languages spelling! ACHIEVEMENT UNLOCKED!
Thanks for the inside view. I appreciate it. There is a misconception at your idea about how I'm learning and what you mention as "dictionary approximations". I do not use pinyin at all to learn. I use Zhuyin. I only use pinyin for the written representations, in the system I'm developing I use both Pinyin and Zhuyin so people can decide which they want to visualise when they use it to remember the tones, copy the contents over and so on. It supports pinyin because it's the most used basically but not because I use it. I also use pinyin to communicate to pinyin users in chats, etc. so I recognise I could have given the impresion I'm a Pinyin user due to that.
Just to add that I do not use pinyin exactly because of what you say. Its approximations to the real sound are not good enough (to my taste at least). Some sounds are simply not there (think liú, jün, etc.). Despite this I have never come across to a di1 value in any system I looked for data. I would personally not consider that because someone says somehing on the street that is the correct or an acceptable way. But I get your point on academia and real world being different things. Thanks for your help, I honestly appreciate it.
很喜欢你的视频! I'm from US but i grew up speaking Chinese, but only words we use between family(a lot of 东北话lol). Do you have any words that to know that 网友 say a lot? (modern slang? recently i learned like 表情包 hh) thank you! :)
'liked'. Thank you for the video. Very informative and interesting as always. Could you please do a video on when to read Chinese from right to left instead of the usual left to right? I have seen photos of some signs on temples(?) that seem to be from right to left. Thank you. 5:25 In the context of _hao se_ I didn't understand the Chinese - "kan mei nv bu shi hao se. Shi yan jing zi ji zhuan guo qu de". Btw, there is a typo at 3:05. Zingxing che --> zixing che
There's no rule. If it doesn't look correct left-to-right, try reading it right-to-left. These days it's mostly on gates, temples, and other old-fashioned structures.

CARE ACT OR this is exactly how anglo kids learn to pronounce complex multisyllable words. You can say CARE ACT and OR right? Now say them all at once and faster and faster. Your pronunciation is very good. Though misspelled you pronounce character about right. Now you know how to pronounce it perfectly. care4ac4tor4.
Enjoyed but I wish that you wouldn't put sentences near the bottom of the screen where they will be covered by youtube title if you stop video to read sentence.
I was curious, when you used 又 in the sentence about the 地铁 what does it mean? I knew it has the meaning of again, right? Can it also be used to link to ideas together similar to saying 不但 and 而且?
It’s used to link adjectives together but they have to be the same in terms of positivity or negativity (I.e. 这个菜又好吃又新鲜 or 这个菜又难吃又贵)。By itself it means “again”
Learn Japanese and you’ll see some real 多音字 😂 for example 生 could be read as: Nama, sei, umareru, ikiru, shou, haeru ... and a few more that I can’t remember now
😭😭😭 I testify it's 100% true. I've studied it for a year 5-6 years ago, I thought it was easier than Chinese. Now I realize how easy Chinese is compared to Japanese, once you get over the tone obstacle.
It's hard to explain.... In grammar, it's all right. But if you speak“我为你什么都可以放弃”or “她为了家庭努力工作” to a Chinese, he will feel something wrong.别问我为啥知道这么多,反正就是读的不顺嘴。

I will read the book until the whole book is read. Good thing we don't have 破音字s in English! That would be confusing!
Please tell me, I heard some Chinese arguing. they spoke so fast that no intonation or tone could be heard. it was as if everything was too cursive, too linear. what's the matter, when you know Chinese, the tones don't matter anymore, or how?
As a native speaker........ I have many problem with my tone you know....... For example: When I am speaking like: jīn tiān yīng xióng lián méng wǔ pái lái bù lái 今天英雄联盟五排来不来? Which means: Do you guys wanna play League today, five of us? When I utter this phrase, I was like..... Jīnger yinxionlianmen~ kaiei laibou? Something like that, tones really don’t matter anymore when you heard of every phrase, you just simply know it even if people speak fast....
I like your videos and have been watching for some time. You teach words and characters, which is very important. Your only problem is you come off as a bit arrogant or like "I can speak Chinese better than you ish." Because you are a native Chinese speaker, you lack the understanding of how difficult Chinese is. So if you are able to take some constructive criticism, I would have you teach more and forget the constant "got you" sort of material that makes people think your language is impossible to learn. In the end, it is your channel and you can do whatever you want to do. RUclips is filled with Chinese teachers with pretty faces and good content. The difference is when I have a talk with one of my Chinese Tutors or friends, and use a newly learned structure or something that makes me sound authentic, I know I have a good Language coach on RUclips. Please be a coach. Thank you.
PuzzleMessage You are not doomed. Pay for a few lessons to have a teacher teach you the tones and Pinyin. Then watch 100 hours of mandarin movies with subtitles in your native language. By the end, you will be able to hear the tones, even if you cannot name them.

Up to now I have put together a total of 298 of these polyphonic characters with all their sounds (and also its traditional character, albeit I do not include that here as it seems you don´t use them).
Exclusively based on your petition leaving leaving the multi-reading characters we know about in the comments that are not included in those 10, here they are. Enjoy! :-)

You would probably ask how/why does a complete newcomer to the language even know about polyphonic characters, or need them at all?
The answer is that I´m developing a system that will hopefully help me, and other learners of Chinese like me (old and new learners), to remember the right tone that goes with each character, each time. They will also be able to know the meaning of each character at the same time they learn its tone, on the spot, even if they are polyphonic. I know there are many other tutors who are teaching hsk levels but your way of teaching is really Amazing (and you are very beautiful 😜)
I will try😂
@@ShuoshuoChinese yes please
Thx for this!! I always confuse 乐(le) 乐(yue) everytime
when it means music, it’s pronounced yuè, when it means happy, it’s pronounced lè
谢谢您老师!您很幽默! Thanks for sharing!! 保重!! 🙏🙏
Thank you for the great videos!
.
When I read a Chinese dictionary, it seems that many Hanzi have a different pronunciation when they are used as surnames.
Common Characters I've mispronounced, well I think that's pretty much all of them.
Kind of disappointed that 了wasn't mentioned. I still don't know when it's not pronounced as 'le'. Good video and very helpful nevertheless - thank you 😊
问得好,我也不知道
when 了 is used as a verb. like 了结,了解. The 'le' is just a auxiliary word without real meaning
Those tones seem so hard! :) Thanks for the explanations.
Thanks a lot for your video 🥰
Amazing thank you alot
Great video! My favorite is 的:我的书 vs. 的确 - but only because this one took me forever to realize 😅
Are you sure is it not 的士 (di4)?
You make it sound so easier 😉😊谢谢老师
Why is your english so tremendously good ? :0
Zingxing che --> zixing che
There's no rule. If it doesn't look correct left-to-right, try reading it right-to-left. These days it's mostly on gates, temples, and other old-fashioned structures.
@@tokyojimu thank you.

So Grace from Grace Mandarin was explaining Chinese pronunciation and was showing the position of her tongue in her mouth. 我太好色了. I left some comments that thanking her for her video but I think I offended her and now she won't reply to my comments. :(
我已经知道那个汉字
但是我想问一个题,,,,,,老师为什么您是这么好?。。。
我现在准备学习hsk4
我想出来的就是上,丧,会,中,乐,传,假,分,切,多音字太多了🙃,非常喜欢这个视频,希望有续集!(下次能不能解释处 chǔ 和 chù 的区别?这个我还是分不开的)问一下老师一个问题,背带裤的背念的是 bēi 还是 bèi?
啊!是bēi!因为你carry那个带子(我觉得哈哈)
Hahaha.
That was on totally different level.
So, enjoyable learning. 👍
Good video
Approximately how many polyphonic Chinese characters exist?
CARE ACT OR this is exactly how anglo kids learn to pronounce complex multisyllable words. You can say CARE ACT and OR right? Now say them all at once and faster and faster.
Your pronunciation is very good. Though misspelled you pronounce character about right. Now you know how to pronounce it perfectly. care4ac4tor4.
Enjoyed but I wish that you wouldn't put sentences near the bottom of the screen where they will be covered by youtube title if you stop video to read sentence.
do you teach 1-1 chinese classes online?
哈哈很快地就学到了character的发音
I like your channel but would you please get a better mic : the audio is not great.
这个菜又好吃又新鲜 or 这个菜又难吃又贵)。By itself it means “again”
usually using the second 又 is enough, two 又 might often happen in oral, maybe a little emphasizing your emotion
你有没有时间当辅导老师,我也在曼谷。
can you distinguish 执,持 and 捉?
johnbeeckler 多谢你的解释和支持 👍🏻
Learn Japanese and you’ll see some real 多音字 😂 for example 生 could be read as:
Nama, sei, umareru, ikiru, shou, haeru ... and a few more that I can’t remember now
Ki, umu
😭😭😭 I testify it's 100% true. I've studied it for a year 5-6 years ago, I thought it was easier than Chinese. Now I realize how easy Chinese is compared to Japanese, once you get over the tone obstacle.
That’s it. I am signing up for Spanish
😂😂😂
"我为了你什么都可以放弃"
"她为家庭努力工作"
Why in the first sentence we add 了 after 为 ?
Could we say 我为你什么都可以放弃 ?
I dont understand when we should use 为 or 为了
It's hard to explain.... In grammar, it's all right. But if you speak“我为你什么都可以放弃”or “她为了家庭努力工作” to a Chinese, he will feel something wrong.别问我为啥知道这么多,反正就是读的不顺嘴。

Wow, Yes it is. I am Korean. Are you studying Korean?
@@金民中 yes indeed I'm currently learning korean, I guess I'm basic-intermidian, but I like hanja a lot, so learned a couple of dozens of them ^^
@@matehix9849 Oh~ That's good for you! More than half of the Korean words are Hanja words lol~ Thank you for loving our language~!
@@金民中 yeah that's right, i read that almost 60% of the korean vocabulary is from chinese origin, so yeah i would keep learning because i felt in love with korean culture ^^

“长”

Please tell me, I heard some Chinese arguing. they spoke so fast that no intonation or tone could be heard. it was as if everything was too cursive, too linear. what's the matter, when you know Chinese, the tones don't matter anymore, or how?
As a native speaker........ I have many problem with my tone you know.......
For example:
When I am speaking like: jīn tiān yīng xióng lián méng wǔ pái lái bù lái
今天英雄联盟五排来不来?
Which means: Do you guys wanna play League today, five of us?
When I utter this phrase, I was like.....
Jīnger yinxionlianmen~ kaiei laibou?
Something like that, tones really don’t matter anymore when you heard of every phrase, you just simply know it even if people speak fast....

While you were watching this video to learn Chinese, I was watching it to learn English.
👍👍👍
Thank you.
this video is way too hard for me :(. i need to get more skills and come back so i will understand better. Thank you for your video anyway.

I can't hear the difference between 2 different tones, I'm doomed 悲
How long have you studied chinese
@@aformula4198 I picked up Chinese and gave up many times throughout the years
PuzzleMessage You are not doomed. Pay for a few lessons to have a teacher teach you the tones and Pinyin. Then watch 100 hours of mandarin movies with subtitles in your native language. By the end, you will be able to hear the tones, even if you cannot name them.
Use the 'pinyin master' app and keep doing the simplest quiz until you get them all right, then do the harder quizzes.
