“The Loner” is a song that most people associate with Gary Moore, but it goes back to an album that Gary Moore played on in the 70’s. Cozy Powell was an English rock drummer who played with the best musicians of British Rock - The Jeff Beck Group, Rainbow, Graham Bonnet, Brian May and Black Sabbath. Powell appeared on at least 66 albums, with contributions on many other recordings. He is widely regarded as one of the greatest and most influential drummers of all time; many rock drummers have cited him as a major influence.
In 1979, Powell released his first solo album, “Over The Top” that featured many well known musicians but no vocalists - it was all instrumental album. Track 6 of that album was “The Loner”, a track credited to Max Middleton who played keyboards on the album. The album states next to the listing “Dedicated to Jeff Beck” the well known British guitarist.
There were a number of guitarists that played on the album, one of them was Gary Moore. However he did not play guitar on The Loner track. Moore however must have thought the song had potential and included his own version on his 1987 studio album “Wild Frontier” with a different arrangement.
Gary Moore’s albums tend to chart well while his singles don’t. “Wild Frontier” did fairly well, but “The Loner” as a single only charted in the UK at #53. However the song has become very well known to guitar fans and if you ask any budding rock guitarist about the song they will know it well.
I have remastered this video as I came across a half decent source copy on the DVD Gary Moore. Ballads And Blues 1982 - 1994. I went to 4K as it came out better than standard HD and I kept the original DVD audio as it is custom to the video with the single/album version being longer than the video version. "The Loner" is probably one of the most covered guitar songs on RUclips. Gary Moore is much better known for his live performances of The Loner which are very different to this studio version.

There was also a very popular version brought out by (then) teenage guitar sensation Tina S when she was about 16.......it's well worth a listen so please do.

Cozy Powell died in true rock star style on 5 April 1998 following a car crash while driving his Saab 9000 at 104 mph (167 km/h) in bad weather on the M4 motorway near Bristol. He had been dating a married woman who was having problems with her husband. Upset, she phoned him and asked him to come quickly to her house which was approximately 35 miles (56 km) away. As he was driving to her house, she phoned him again and asked "Where are you?" He informed her he was on his way and she then heard him say "Oh shit!" followed by a loud bang.
Powell was ejected through the windscreen and died at the scene. According to the BBC report, at the time of the crash Powell's blood-alcohol reading was over the legal limit, and he was not wearing a seat belt, in addition to talking with his girlfriend on his mobile phone.

Good to hear you know quality mate :) What do you think of the version by Tina S ? ruclips.net/video/9e9AyDXx19Q/видео.html Quite amazing for a 16 year old and I think she captures it brilliantly. The beauty of the song is that it can be played in so many different ways, I doubt Gary Moore would have been much of a fan of his studio version as we all know he is far far far better live. Hope you and your family are well buddy, cheers Austech

@@Austech Yes, I have followed Tina's work since the beginning and I had already seen this great version. I just didn't understand her change in the last 2 videos despite her still being an excellent guitarist. Everything is fine here and I hope it is with all of you too. Cheers!
