    Seeing these bears up close is a reminder of that lost aesthetic of 1960s Disney when they were using people like Marc Davis to design all the characters so there was a consistent style to everything.

    The western theme of Frontierland seems so weird at times. Remember, westerns were basically the superhero genre of the 50s until space became the new big thing. Westerns would fade in and out of popularity but have never truly been forgotten mainly thanks to the John Wayne and Clint Eastwood movies in the 70s and other beloved favorites like Young Guns and Back to the Future 3.

    As someone who has never and probably will never be able to afford to go to one of these parks, the thing that stands out about the Country Bears to me is how it had that much of a cultural impact. We wouldn't have the big animatronic arcade and pizzeria movement of the late 70's and early 80's without someone seeing the Country Bears and saying "yeah, I can do that, but with a gorilla." And while there is a reason to not like the IP invasion hitting their show, at least they get to have a show and not had them ripped out to make dance floors. And they won't be a distant memory that kids only know through the pop culture osmosis of a certain video game franchise about murderous animatronics. Anyway, I remember kind of being excited for the movie since it was the Jim Henson Creature Shop and the writers of the film were from Animaniacs. Then I heard how lousy it was and ignored it, and then saw bits of it and...well, it's a better Blues Brothers 2000 than Blues Brothers 2000 at least.

    • @mdalsted
      @mdalsted Месяц назад +5

      "Yeah, I can do that, but with a gorilla."
      To be fair, I think Chuck E. Cheese was the one trying to copy the bears first. Then, Aaron Fechter made the Country Bear *Jubilee*, also known as the Hard Luck Bears (which, fun fact, was the origin of Billy Bob). Then the gorilla -- Fatz Geronimo, originally Fatz Gorilla -- would arrive as part of the Wolf Pack 5.

    I honestly haven't heard anyone actually happy with the most recent change. And while I understand that it was a jukebox attraction of covers, it had its own identity compared to the rest of Disney. Now it's yet another jukebox of Disney songs, all the while you've been listening to Disney songs outside of the attraction.

      I think an animated film by WDAS, either 2D or 3D, could be a great way to get the bears more fans. Especially if they made it an “origin story” so to speak of Henry and Wendell trying to put together the original show and meeting all the bears along the way.

    You know, as someone who has never been to a Disney theme park or knew anything about the Country Bears, I have to say, I find this corny, charmingly hokey group of performers a million times more charming in their original incarnations than the glorified jukebox show that has been heavily sanitized nowadays. I think they could have honestly made a decent animated show out of these characters back in the day.

    When I was little, my mom had a Big Al poster hanging up in our house that she got from a trip to Disneyland she took long before she and my dad were married. It was a little confusing to me, because my dad's nickname among his friends is "Big Al." So for the longest time, I wondered why we had a poster of this bear hanging up with my dad's nickname. But then Mom explained it, and I thought it was the coolest thing for there to be a Big Al in Disneyland.
    And if they really are making those Big Al plushies, clearly I need one :D

    Colin, I agree with you on your statement on Musical Jamboree, I love the original show and the overlays that came after it, in fact the first time I saw the show, it actually got me into 60’s country or classic country music and it made me who I am today. The new show just gives me a weird feeling inside, I get they were trying to shoehorn so many references to the original show, (I love the queue) but it just feels so Disneyfied and not original anymore.

    • @SlushysSecret
      @SlushysSecret Месяц назад +5

      Considering that the original is just a collection of covers of other songs, with only 2 original songs being produced for the show, this is pretty much on brand for the bears, and I guess with Iger around this pretty much is the best option for the modern day, not completely stripped of the immersion

    Nice video! I saw the bears in Disney on Parade back in '73. The Sun Bonnets were first seen up near the ceiling hanging by those trapezes, as you point out. Then, a few minutes later they re-emerged on ground level dancing. (Presumably two different sets of costumes and performers were used.) Wendell was pictured in the program but not present in the show (at least not when it played in Los Angeles). I was pleasantly surprised when, five or so years later, Wendell started appearing in the parks as a walk-around character. Thanks for doing the video. I didn't know the Tokyo Disney versions of the overlays were so different!

I think it’s a surprising and fun thing to see evolve. Now I don’t know what’s in store for the country Bears, but I’m pretty happy. They’re singing Disney songs and go onto to make new songs in the future. It’s one of those shows where I think it’s meant to change a little bit.

When I was really young I was pretty terrified of most animatronics, and my parents made the (probably wise) decision to steer clear of Grizzly Hall during the trips we made to Disney World while I still had that fear. I hope someday I’m able to experience seeing a show for myself now that I’m older and can appreciate the characters.

Even if it was the vacation overlay (which had been in 5 year hiatus) it still gave me something I couldn’t experience before. Being a Cali resident I don’t get that same luxury. I briefly remember the Christmas overlay and always love seeing that on the Magical of Christmas at Walt Disney World vacation video. I tend to watch that every year to get into the Christmas spirit. I also owned the Disneyland fun sing along and always knew the great outdoors song from that sing along. I don't think I ever saw the summer vacation overlay. The song Great Outdoors is kind of iconic now XD I don't mind the new version to the country bears show, its not bad, at the time could've done a nice medium where you have some new original songs with a little disney in the mix. Have it to give more lore on the Country Bears. Like how the movie tried XD; Which I do enjoy the movie. Its good campy fun!

    do think maybe they could've used less standard disney songs(am glad that change didn't happen as the olaf hat would've been much/if anything should've had home on the range or brother bear in it.:3) & with how rufus spot was brer bear's home for a bit they should've relocated the brer characters there as band members.(wish that had happen for the princess and the frog ride as outside it being canon to the new series which i can't remember a disney park doing it's a downgrade tbh.)

Are you not amused by some big bear singing his way through "Blood on the Saddle". Heck, I even saw their movie in theaters, though that's not much to brag about. Honestly I'm just happy the attraction's still around. Sure, the addition of Disney songs did irritate me for a bit, but they're not terrible. Heck, I actually think Big Al breaking down through "Remember Me" is hilarious. So yeah, happy the Five Bear Rugs plus the rest are still rompin' and hollerin' over in Frontierland.
