You're awesome man. Long story short, had the crankshaft pulley bolt back out during fire up after a drive belt job. Bent the valves, apparently. Can you believe that marvel of engineering? One bolt comes out and BAM! head has to come off. Anyway, watched this before doing it to familiarize myself with the engine. Your tha man!
Thanks for the video, I've learnt a lot just by watching these. I have two ST engine I bought with apparent bottom end failures so I can try and teach myself to strip them and rebuild them. I found that there is a torx bolt under the cam but I'm not sure what size it is, I don't suppose you happened to know do you? Thanks once again for the video, I'm really enjoying watch these.
@@ALLTHINGSJIM Hi Jim, 2 months later and I have the cylinder head off :) You were right, it was a T55 for the cylinder head bolts. Just noticed I have the infamous crack where the spark plugs are on the cylinder head, so time to source a new one!
hello good morning friends I wanted to ask you if you can help me with a question I have, I'm from Mexico I'm repairing a party engine st 1.6 ecoboost the car got hot and the head was rectified and blocked the car did not start and the client never He told me that they had already repaired it once, and I have the doubt if these motors no longer turn on when rectified and I need to change the complete block or notor
Sorry this is a slightly old video and this isn't a dig but a general question. Usually everywhere i see about having to disconnect the battery it recommends removing the negative terminal first. How come you didn't do this in this video? I can see you prevented contact for the positive but just curious.
Yes you should always disconnect the negative first if its possible to do so, with some fords its hard to reach the negative terminal without taking other things off first so this is really just easy to do it this way tbh
2016 Fiesta ST owner here. After a compression test; I appear to be an issue with the piston or piston ring. I will be taking off the head today (using this video as a guide). Do you think it's possible to replace the pistons in the car without pulling the engine and by just removing the head and accessing the crankshaft from the bottom? Thanks Jim!
Yeah you can do it that way but its honestly easier to drop the complete engine out still sat on subframe onto a bench or something and work on it that way, then you have lots of room etc and actually wont take much longer than trying to strip the top off then the bottom. Id drop it out if i were you save yourself some swearing!
Hi I have a ST180 started getting pressure build up in the coolant after about 40mins of driving and is confirmed that combustion gases are getting into the coolant system, I am planning on removing the head but trying to get a picture what I could be expecting like head gasket failure or head lift or cracked liners. Driving me made thinking about it. Any suggestions. ?
hey i know this a late post my car died due to the recall ford told me they did but they didn't 3 years ago. now they are trying to tell my car is out of warranty because its at 103,000. they are trying their best not to fix the car any advice
If you can prove the recall was never done and the problem was caused as a direct problem of this stick to your guns , threaten small claims court and ring ford HQ and dont take no for an answer you might find if ford HQ get involved they will be told to change there mind or atleast help with the cost
hello, I bought a 2016 fiesta st seven months ago, I also took a 400km trip in very hot weather and the car did not have any kind of problem, could you tell me what are the typical symptoms of this engine when it has the gasket to change and if it is necessary to change it with a racing one to rest assured? the car now has 50,000 km
Combustion gases in coolant is one example of failed head gasket on these cars typically itl drive fine normal conditions but in hot weather or driving spirited youl see a rise in temps one bad thing about this car is the temp gauge will not go up until its already too hot get an accessport and monitor temps with that i one has a leaky thermostat housing and the oem temp gauge didnt go up at all but when it did it didnt give me enough time to pull over by the time i pulled over i got a coolant over temp code too late the headgasket went
Not really, i was running 360bhp on one and the headgasket was fine, the piston is another story though, just make sure the recall has been performed, if it got the old headgasket design, then yeah, get that replaced
Can you please help me I'm doing this job on just a se 1.6 have all the special tools but I got 1 on tdc and got my new head bolts torqued then when installing camshafts how do I do this if all my valves are closed and can't get past this step?
First wind back the crank abit so the piston isnt at tdc to avoid any valves being bent, carefully put the camshafts in place roughly the right way up, and put a tiny bit of clean oil where it sits and where its holders sit. Then put the cam holders on and start to do the bolts up gently by hand first until they meet the holders ( always try to start in the middle, then the left one from middle, then the right one from middle, then far left, then far right etc) do them up like that gradually until the correct torque is achieved once they are both in and all tight put the camshaft locking tool on so the camshafts are in correct time, then wind the crank back to the correct timing. Hope that makes sense 👍
Excess rattling, coolant leaks from around front cover / head gasket area, or any coolant leak for that matter on a 3 cylinder same with oil leaks... they blow up easily so if they are going to be neglected or have a hard life id go for one of the older 4 cylinder more reliable engines.... if you do go to buy one try find out if its had any repairs to the coolant system, specifically the front cover. 👍
Regarding the recall ref coolant issue, from what year was this fixed? I'm looking to buy my daughter a fiesta ecoboost but one without head gasket/coolant issues. Also, whats the official Ford book time for removing one of these heads?
The coolant issue was a late recall so actually affected most of them, you can easliy tell if the coolant recall has been done by looking in the engine bay, the super obvious givaway if by the coolant expansion bottle - its a diffrent bottle and next to it is a sort of vertical black pipe which is actually a level sensor... I cant remember the official time to be honest for a headgasket on this engine, id imagine it to be between 6-9 hours. Hope that answers your questions 👍 (they are actually good engines despite the recall if they have been looked after )
Hi there! Yeah the cylinders were filling with coolant and coming straight out the exhaust, no it's not common the 1.6 ecoboost engines are great once the coolant recall has been done (not all need the recall), this car had not been looked after well at all, and didn't have the recall mentioned- as a result the headgaskets gone and it needs a short block engine as I believe the cylinders may have dropped very slightly allowing the coolant into The cylinders . Thanks for commenting and watching 👍
I thought to myself, let me learn how to change my blown head gasket on my ST. After watching this video I might as well just throw my whole car away 😅
Said it before and I will say it again . I would let this fella work on my motor any day of the week . Good work dude keep them video coming.
Thanks for the amazing comment! It's things like that make me want to carry on making videos. Thanks for the support 👍👍👍

Thanks for watching and commenting , if I remember correctly its either a t55 or t60 torx, 95% sure its the 55. 👍

Piece of cake....putting it back together, now that's hard part! Seriously sometimes you gotta admit that some things are above your ability:(

thats one hella work lol, mechanic working with real passion tho, nice buddy
So ummm I have a mildly built 15 fiesta st and blew my head gasket and don’t have time to change it. How much would a technician charge me to fix it
How long does it take, and do you think its duable by an amateur? with a lot of time and a couple beers.
Is the 2010 ford fiesta same engine?
What all tools you need for this job??
Is that one a stretch belt for the drive belt? Will this be applicable to 2016 fiesta SE 1.6?
Man, they really couldn't make this any easier hey? Oh well, time to get started
Awesome detailed video! You don't happen to have a step by step tutorial or engine diagram by any chance do ya? I'm having the same issue 😅
Not currently I dont im afraid 😨
Thank you!

does these fiesta burn gaskets a lot?
No, proper maintenance and no back alley remaps and it'll be fine.

thought I recognise your name from a previous video showing the 1L remap!

Hey man! Great video. Using it for a 2014 fiesta st. If i may ask, how many hours does this take more or less?
Thanks!
Depends on skill, tools etc and if you need to skim the head but around 5-6 hours if your a tech id say 👍
jim if u have removal engine of transit pls send to me I need 2017
I dont sorry but if one comes in and i do it ill keep you in mind 👍
Half way there n tonight I saw this video.. daughters car overheated got oil in water. Hope the head ain’t warped but will find out tomorrow 😂..
Oil in the coolant? You might want to make sure its not the oil cooler thats actually faulty also 👍
@@ALLTHINGSJIM ok thanks.
All the crap around modern engines, Such a nightmare to remove Just that alone!
Exactly!
Brilliant vid, very informative however my teeth grate when mechanics use the scuttle for parts storage
Like when a doctor uses the patient's chest LOL
It’s too convenient ;)
This is incredibly complicated, no wonder mechanics charge 2 kidneys
We know how to take the bits apart just get on with the gasket 🤫
😂
That's a lot of work for a head gasket.
Crappy car, engine blown 60,000 km
