    I’ve been wearing 7 different enduro mountain bike helmets thus far in 2021: the Fox DropFrame Pro, Giro Tyrant, Giro Switchblade, Giro Manifest, Troy Lee A2, Bell Sixer to the aluminum foil secured via sanitary facial mask. All these helmets have been tested by Virginia Tech, with one exception. And you know what? I’ve learned a lot from wearing all these different helmets! loved my Dropframe until I got Bose Tempo glasses. The way the sides come down so much , combined with the strap placement, put pressure on my temples with the glasses. Not horrible, but I ended up going with a TLD A3 for true comfort!

    Well done Jeff you turned what could be a boring technical review into a entertaining and really informative video. Helmets don’t seem to get enough love in review videos but honestly it is one of the most important things a biker will purchase. I have to admit I can spend hours going over bike specs and geo numbers before making a purchase and then just buy a helmet because I like how it looks. This video made me re-think that and I will go do some research now on the projection ratings of my current helmets and see if maybe I should upgrade.

    I was all about the half shell for enduro and full face for downhill until I missed a step-down double last year. I spent a few days in a Level 1 trauma center, underwent emergency facial reconstruction surgery, and had to learn how to drink through a straw again. Now I'm one of the nerds grinding up Tiger/Galbraith in a full face. It took awhile to stop feeling self-conscience about overdoing protection levels, but hey, I'm back in the saddle and getting in trouble. It seems like more people are doing it, too.. It's TLD Stage for enduro now. Bonus- chin-mount for camera angles.

    Great video with lots of good info from you. Thanks for taking the time to explain so much. And how long to keep a helmet! It's time for me to get a new one lol!! After flying through the air head first into a pile of boulders a few years ago, I rarely wear anything but a full face. They give me confidence and I've gotten very used to them. But for a chill ride, I'll put on the regular shell. Even at 52 yrs old my inner child still gets sendy though lol! I guess that's what happens when you grow up in steep terrain.. Thanks again Jeff and stay stoked!

    Thank you for the review. I ended up buying a Fox Speedframe. It fits me well, but I needed to add a pad in the back - as Fox recommended going with the larger size if you are on the border between sizes. The 100mm visor seems to be fine, but I am pretty inexperienced to MTB. I like the MIPS system too. Thank you for all your videos. Very relatable information and presentation!

    I’d highly recommend the Giro Fixture MIPS for anyone on a budget. It’s pretty comfortable, and both myself and some of my friends have had some gnarly crashes where the helmet definitely did it’s job.

    I bought a 2021 Fox Speedframe Pro MIPS recently, before I had seen any of this. It's good to know my own research led me to one of the safest helmets made. I was previously using an ABUS helmet and while very light and VERY breazy, I just never felt that it would protect my melon in a crash.
    Different with the Speedframs Pro tho, I like this helmet immensely and I feel safe wearing it!

  • @liambaulman
    @liambaulman 3 года назад +6

    I have been running a Giro Tyrant for 2 years and I highly recommend it. One of the upsides to this helmet is the incredible durability, I have crashed into trees at about 30 kmh (18 mph for the Americans) and the helmet has not cracked or been damaged, I'm planning on replacing it soon just to freshen it up a bit but I cannot explain how much I like it.

    Really informative video! I carefully considered all the helmets here before going to my local bike shop and falling in love with the Fox drop frame. It fits my head perfectly, and feels SO safe. Ive never had a helmet with a visor, so shielding my eyes from the sun is pretty kush. Hopefully I’ll never have to actually put the helmet to the test 🤞😵‍💫

    Just went through the process of getting a new trail helmet. After trying ~5 different premium offerings from the large brands, I settled on the Giro Manifest. Crash ratings are very important to me but fit is king. You want a helmet that disappears on the ride. I don't ever notice the Manifest when riding. If a helmet isn't comfortable then you won't want to wear it or it will become distracting. Same applies for full faced and even motorcycle helmets.

    Troy Lee Designs A2 here. It looks killer, and is very well ventilated. I feel safe in it, but it's quite large and/or bulky. 60cm balloon head so went for XL/XXL 😶🤙
    Seems like the Fox Speedframe may have a more snugly fit. Gonna check it out. Looks great too.

    What do you think of the increased movement the newest MIPS has in these helmets? I got the TLD A3 and really the shell moved way too much due to this new design (not the cinch system around my head which fit fine).

    Hey Jeff I appreciate you mentioning that the eps foam is only good after one crash. I fell of my bike trying to avoid a fallen tree's root system hit a rock and fell about 6ft off the trail before braking the fall with my head and being pinned between two fallen trees. I now have some good dents in my helmet and am looking for and upgrade. I know I will get a new helmet probably one with an angi system on it as I ride alone most times and it took me a good 15 minutes to get back up to the trail from where I landed. It would be nice to have the extra security of a system that calls if I am too hurt to get myself out of a predicament or knocked unconscious.

    Agree with you the Fox Speed Frame Pro is my go to helmet. It is cooler and for my head (oval) a great fit. Previously I used Giro and loved them but needed a cooler helmet here is So Cal. The Fox works and is better fit after adjustment.

  • @superawesomefuntimego

    Giro's and Fox always seem to fit my noggin' pretty well. I am a fan of the Speedframe Pro, priced decently, solid features and fits me perfect. I recently wrecked and hit my head pretty hard on a rock wearing one. Put a nice dent in the side right above the ear. But walked away without a concussion (can't same the same about my fractured ribs), so it did it's job. Ordered a new one as soon as I got home.

    I've ridden Bell helmets for a long time, and will throw it out there that Giro and Bell are owned by the same company and many of their helmets share technology. I just got a Super Air R and I love how light it is for a full face helmet, but then I can remove the chinbar and it becomes a standard half-shell helmet. Wish it had a magnetic closure though...

    @4:15 exactly what I did same shoulder but I hit the tree without my bike attached to me Superman stylee, shattered shoulder in 3 places, 22 pieces snapped off it, and dislocated it. Metal plate, 6 months into 12 months of physio and just been told I need 2 more ops. It's all good fun until it's agony lol gorgeous paramedic helicopter lady said I was being very stoic and that coupled with the nitrous oxide and morphine had me feeling pretty damn good lol.
    I was just glad it wasn't my right arm that was out of action as I'm right handed and ALL the pleasure would've been gone :-)
    Wasn't wearing an helmet and just back on the bike the other day, still haven't got an helmet, never had an helmet, but my sister wants to get me one for Christmas.

Actually, I would've liked to see that covered more in general here, but I guess no news is good news? No trouble with glasses with any of these? I was surprised that you spoke so glowingly about the Giro Tyrant given those closed ears. No way to put in and out earbuds with that.

    great info! I definitely agree that fit is most important. And i notice too that brands tend to have a shape that they mold their helmets too. I wonder if anyone ever made a chart or something that shows what shape to expect from each manufacturer. The helmet i boight prior to my current one had a good shape for me but was too roomy as it inly came in two sizes. I bought a higher end model from the same make that came in more specific sizes and it’s pretty much the most comfortable helmet ever for me.

      I don't know of anyone doing a shape chart or the like. Best option is to get a few to try on, and return the ones that don't work!

    I just had to switch away from the Fox speed frame, because here in Phoenix we ride at first and last light in the summer and the fox visor won't come down far enough to block sunlight in your eyes. Got a Kali, better.

      @JeffKendallWeed  3 года назад +4

      Yeah, the Kali Maya visor is really good. That's probably my favorite feature of the Maya. I wish more helmet companies would embrace the big visor. Thus far the Switchblade visor at 130mm is the best one I've used yet. If I can get a moment, I'll try throwing that visor on the Tyrant.

    My only complaint for most helmets is that the visor isn't long enough when I had a Giro I felt that they chocked me by the straps are not adjustable by position but they are really comfortable and bell helmets were okay but long rides were painful on my head

    I had the same issue with the dropframe. I wear a large in all models but the large drop frame is terribly small.

    Helmet shopping is the worst for my ~63cm oval head. I am currently shopping for a new helmet so I appreciate this to hear some opinions on helmets I was looking at.
    (Edit 63cm just saw that. 63mm would also be an evil helmet to find. Original said 63mm not cm for head size.)

    I got a Leatt DBX 4.0 and used it last year full season. First time I used a fullface. When climbing I take it off, when in the city i ride with it. Its not too bad. It has arround 850g and is very ventilated. Id like a open face helmet again but I would feel 'naked' with one =)

    Very interesting your results with the Dropframe. I have a Medium Proframe, and I bought a Medium Dropframe figuring it would fit the same, and just like with you, it's a tiny bit on the small size for me. Wonder why the discrepancy...

    • @JeffKendallWeed
      @JeffKendallWeed  3 года назад

      Yeah Chris, it's very odd that Fox used a different sizing. I bet it was the result of an expensive mold being made slightly wrong or something, not a huge deal, but confusing fo many of us.

    I just ordered the Bontrager Blaze WaveCel. It has the funny inner shell so it is a bit heavy and some people complain about the heat, but I like that it blocks the sun a little. Skin cancer stinks.. been there, done that. "$25 head, get a $25 helmet." I like that you didn't get too hung up on price.

    @JeffKendallWeed The new Fox Dropframe Pro has you covered now with BOA in the back. I just replaced my old Pro version after a big crash. But beware Fox has changed sizing on this new lid. A straight Medium swap was too big and I had to go to a Small.

    Tried a bunch of helmets last year and none of them fit my weirdly shaped head! My favorite brand was POC, it was so well made and the chin strap system was the nicest I’ve ever used. In the end I found that Troy Lee at REI which fits great and is really comfortable.

    I realize this vid is a bit older. Just wanted to say that it’s pretty well-known (by now, anyway) that you unfortunately have to size up in the Dropframe. I got an XL and it fits great, and Fox also includes extra pads for adjustment. Very comfy and secure, though it’s definitely hotter than my POC Kortal half-shell (no duh).
