Hello Ray, nice to see you working on this old HRO-Receiver.There is a lot of information You will find under "Western Historic Radio Museum HRO Receiver" in the net. I am working in CW with an old HRO-5 and a BC-458 -Transmitter on 60m and 40m. 73 Gun DJ8CY
well, usefull ...probably not as I don't have one (or anything like it) but fascinating non the less! Cant wait for you to get it sorted so I can go back and watch them all back to back.
Hi Ray, I've been so looking forward to this episode and is another fascinating video on how your diagnostic thoughts are on solving the mystery of this radio. So glad its working. I certainly gave you a problem to solve 😂😂. Roy
@@G4WTV Hi Roy, I’m loving it. So much more interesting than simple fault finding. I’m determined to get the radio back to full working order. I wonder how many more videos there will be? Cheers, Ray.
There seems to be some agency here in the states that want AM band removed from new automobile radios. I don't know if it is the car manufactures or someone else. I never listen to FM band, always AM or streamed music. AM in the states has mainly talk radio and sports shows. Ray, I enjoy your channel. I am a retired industrial electronics technician working for BIG Oil. I did a lot of commercial two-way radio repair back in the 70's 80's. We still had some vacuum tube FM TX/RX systems on low band 49MHZ, all of those system are long gone now.
@@terryspears2307 that’s interesting about removing the a.m. band from new automobile radios. I think that will happen here eventually. I wonder what will happen to the AM band in the future when there are no stations left on the band. I’m glad you enjoy the channel. It’s great to hear from you. All the best, Ray.
I'm glad you've made progress. If I might hazard a guess, based on some experience with other radios, the hole you had to drill was NOT there and there would NOT have been a "spike" in the chassis so to make it VERY difficult to install the coil pack upside down. Either National gave up and added spikes for ALL coil sub-packs, or somebody added one to the end coil. As it was a modification to the original radio, the pack you got given had no hole. Is it possible the 12SA7 for this receiver should be in a metal can? That might stop the harmonics/microphonics. Also, I'll have a dig around, as I seem to remember a silicon diode replacement for your 6H6 (you have the 12-volt equivalent double diode). I'll send you the schematic, although I'd bet a pair of 1N4007s would do the trick, as they're rated at 1000 volts. Cheers, Ray.
Hi Chuck, Good thoughts abou the spike, thanks. I have tried slipping a can over the 12SA7 but it made no difference. A pair of 1N4007s would do the trick in place of the valve. Cheers, Ray.
If you do take the coil packs apart, just be carefull when re - clamping each assy. in place. Make sure all the studs line up both across the coil pack & height wise. Just clamping the assy's tight in place dosnt allways give good alignment and the pack will appear to be dead. Fiddling is often called for in my experience. 73 de G8NYZ
Hi Ray - good to see you making progress. One thought about the oscillation/cut-out you are getting on medium wave - have you tried using a metal 12SA7, or even making a temporary grounded shield with foil? Sometimes radios designed to use metal valves will do odd things if glass valves are substituted.
@@edwardholland36 that’s a good idea. I’ve just stuck an old valve can over the glass valve and it hasn’t made any difference. The valve was well grounded and I was expecting the valve to behave itself. Not to worry. It was well worth trying. Thanks.!
I don't know anything about old radio technology. But this looks like someone was trying to modify the radio to do something that it doesn't do when it arrives to from the factory. I hope you can restore it to the factory standard.

8:34 JAN valves were WWII era American Joint Army Navy issue, hence the JAN. Could this be the case with this component? 🤔
