1995 working at Minneapolis Auto Auction, one day I got in a Chrysler minivan for a jump start. I didn’t know that any of them were built with a manual and I assumed it was an automatic. The upright portable jump starter and two older guys were in front of the van. I turned the key and the van jumped forward, startling everyone including me. The two guys in front of it got mad at me.

Hello from Thailand.. seeing your review this van brings so many fond memories. Back in the early till mid 1990's I would get to go visit relatives in the US during our Thai summer breaks and one of my aunts had a 1988 Plymouth Grand Voyager that I got to ride during our road trip all over Washington, Oregon, Idaho, and BC if I had the Canadian Visa. Then one summer my aunt traded it in for a (used) 1992 Grand Voyager, which I also got to ride everywhere. Ten years later I went back to the US for grad school and it was my first time buying a car in the US, I got a 10-yr old Dodge Caravan (1995) and that was like a shuttle van for the Thai undergrad students at my university. I drove them to Costco and Chinese buffet and all around North Carolina and Virginja. Fun times! Reliable and reasonably affordable to run and maintain .

My dad walked into a Plymouth dealer in 1993 and said "Give me that one". The dealer was excited to get the base SWB Voyager off the lot. It was white with blue interior. Classy AF. I would have had to learn to drive that turd if my sister didn't crash it.

My parents bought an 89 voyager in 1992. I was born in 1995 and they brought me home from the hospital in it. They kept it until 1998. I still can remember it. I remember I would always play with the Chrysler logo on the hood. I’m surprised I didn’t break it off lol

My dad bought a new teal '91 Grand Voyager through a relative for the family when I was a kid. It had the 3.3L V6 and A/C in the back. It was the family vehicle for 9 years, and we had many nice road trips in it. Comfortable yet supportive seats you could sleep on that simply don't exist in modern cars. It was even used to pull a bass boat before my dad bought a Ranger. Probably not surprising that the transmission went out, as was typical of them, and it needed engine repairs. It's a mystery why he chose the Plymouth over the Chrysler or Dodge, because as far as I could tell they only had different grills.

The early 2010s Mazda 5 came with a manual. It was a pretty miniature minivan, but came with 3 rows and sliding doors, so I’d say it counts

  • @dragon81heart
    @dragon81heart Год назад +7

These were among the greatest road trip vehicles ever known to mankind
And I would definitely pick nearly any minivan of the 80s-90s-2000s over not only any of the few new minivans still being made today, but over pretty much any vehicles ever made for a multiple hour trip to anywhere.
Caravans, Astros, Aerostars, Windstars, GM dustbusters, and in later years of course Siennas and the such
Roomy, soft and squishy seats, room to move around, quiet and smoother riding than nearly anything sold today...what more could you want?
Sure they were anything but fast, and beauty is in the eye of the beholder, but no unnecessary distractions and all the charm and character that is pretty much not even a thing in new vehicles today
There were more like members of the family rather than vehicles
These will always hold very special places in the hearts of us that grew up in these ❤

I wish I could show you my family's 1992 Plymouth Sundance. It's in almost perfect condition. It has some scrapes and dings from over the years owning it. My dad bought it back in 1999 for $1,000. He brought it to Mexico because that's where we used to live. We moved to the US and left the car in Mexico. Every December we go to Mexico and every single time it starts right up.
I've had some people offering money to sell it to them because it's in that perfect condition and you don't see those anymore. You still see a few 90s cars still roaming Mexico but most of them are already beat up and dusted.

I owned a 1981 Ford E150 windowless cargo van with a 300 cu. in. inline 6 cylinder engine, that had a 4 or 5 speed manual transmission, it was a 'pig' to master as the shifter was 'way' back to where it normally would be, but I did master it. This model of the E150 was a rarity from what I gather.

My aunt and uncle had a 1994 Dodge Grand Caravan SE that they bought brand new, and owned for 10 years. Because it spent its whole life in California, it didn’t succumb to rust. My uncle did not want power windows and ordered it with crank windows. The van did have A/C, cruise, tilt, stereo cassette, and 2nd row captain’s chairs. Despite not having power windows, it had power mirrors and I believe power locks. They put over 180K miles on that van in 10 years, and both of their daughters learned to drive in it. They sold it in 2004 when the A/C quit working, because the van wasn’t worth a whole hell of a lot of money at that point, and it was going to cost a fortune to fix the A/C.

And my father always had a Dodge and bought a new 93 Intrepid ES then a 96 ES and then an 02 R/T all new and gave me the candy apple red metallic 96 ES when i was 12 and then the Inferno red pearl 02 R/T later on. And a few years ago i had a silver 02 300M special and swapped the fake cf trim for the genuine california walnut wood and half wood wheel from an 01 luxury package. Deffinitely know the warm 90s feeling very well and also still love it. I still get excited when i see a 1st gen LH car on the road

It should be the other way around, Manual mirrors and auto windows. Most of the time I assume the same person would be driving it and their spouse their own vehicle so you don't have to move the mirrors too often. But, rolling down another window or a surprise storm mid-trip is a real pain. I don't know if the one sliding door was for safety, because when vans got 2 rear doors that was advertised as being for safety. If a T-bone crash happened, you could still get out on the other side. With this van, if it got T-boned on the right, you had to maneuver the baby through the front driver's door or tailgate. Its nice how simple it is to drive though. Everything is right there without going through infotainment menus for basic things like HVAC. Heck, with this 100% manual design you don't have to worry about bulbs at all because the mode you're in is depressed.

8:27 - This isn't fair. For one, compare it to the model it replaced, which was quite homely. Then, look at Ford and GM. Ford didn't have a minivan when this debuted, and the Aerostar was hideous. GM went bizarre with its U bodies. This was a handsome van, light years ahead of its predecessor's design and comfortably ahead of the peers.
