  • Using stepper motors to play a great Daft Punk medley made and performed by Pentatonix.

Sorry for the cicadas in the background audio, but they love Pentatonix's music too.

Is the reason your stepper setup sounds so much better because you're using 256x microstepping? I can just see a liiiittle bit of those stepper drivers and they look like they might be 2130s.
I'm actually in the process of building an instrument using steppers, and I figured out four ways I might be able to improve the tonal quality while keeping the stepper sound:
Good quality stepper drivers with a cleaner wave form, securing the steppers properly so they don't rattle around, creating a better body for them to resonate in, and increasing the microstep value to smooth the edges of the waveform. I've already got all the parts here I just need to do some arduino programming, but it looks like you've done all four of those things already?

Actually they are Allegro A4988 and they are full stepping. Microstepping decreases the "volume" and messes up the pitch

@@Aerospacesmith So, when you say messes up the pitch, is it like, 2x microstepping is an octave higher because the frequency is doubled, or is there some other thing going on causing it?

First. ;). Sounds fantastic and the cicadas weren't even noticable.
Edit: That wind up at 2:25 sounds AMAZING.
