Mario Medley - Stepper Music Art
My art installation is finally done! I've spent way too many long nights at work on this, but the hard work has paid off.
Each hanging cube contains 2 stepper motors with 8 cubes in total: 7 clear acrylic and 1 MDF.
The MDF cube is the "subwoofer" with two NEMA 23 motors which each only play low notes. The 7 acrylic cubes each have two NEMA 17 motors that act as volume control. Louder notes make both motors play; quieter notes only 1 motor plays.
This means each clear cube is 1 instrument that can only play 1 note at a time. The subwoofer motors are independent giving 2 sub instruments.
This totals for 9 "instruments" in the band.

The music box is finally done! And I've made my first set of motor mittens. I'm going to attempt to make different mittens for different themed songs, but I may make some generic mittens for non-themed songs.

Finally have music box fully built. I'll be making markers to go on the stepper shafts to better show rotation.

    For those wondering what the hell this is, this is called a multi-layer stepper motor, as there’s actually two separate stepper motors inside one motor housing, with the axles layered on top of each other. It’s mainly used in certain 3D printers which have both axis controlled from the same location in a tight space. A triple layer version also exists, and if this guy replaced all eight of the single motors on the acoustic box with those, he’d go from 8 steppers to 24 without using much more space. Imagine the kinds of music a 24-stepper (or 8 triple-stepper) array could play!!!

    This comment sort of got away from me, it's all just my opinion, and as with all things, especially musical, if you disagree, then it's your instrument and you should do it however brings you joy, but I've been thinking about this for a week or two now and I thought an outside perspective, either to be taken in any form or thrown away, might have some value. with all kindness to your current setup and the effort you put into it, I think acoustically this old cardboard box with hot glue is still my favorite of yours. If I may be permitted to speculate a little here, in my experience building and tinkering with violins, a violin bridge that sends all the frequencies efficiently from the strings to the body sounds absolutely awful (A friend did it with computer simulation and generative design, it's like nails on a chalkboard). If you look at a well made bridge, you should see that there's no straight path from the strings to the feet. There's always flex built into the system, whereas if you look at a cello or a bass bridge, you'll find a much straighter system. On higher range instruments I think the upper harmonics become too shrill after a certain point. I'm inclined to believe this flex in a violin bridge is there to eat those nasty high frequencies and upper harmonics. My theory here is that this cardboard box and hot glue sounds better to me because somewhere along the line, those harsher higher frequencies are being eaten by... Something. Maybe the glue, maybe the cardboard, maybe just how the weight is sitting. All that being said, watching your more recent videos it's obvious that you've done a lot of work on the software side to get the tuning just right, and that is greatly appreciated.

    What drivers are you using for this? I have tried a number of stepper drivers to varying results on the sound of the motor themselves.

    • @SteampunkSammy
      @SteampunkSammy Год назад

      Make sure whatever driver you are using you do not use any half-stepping feature, they tend to make the motor quieter as less actuation is happening and over a shorter time.

    • @Aerospacesmith
      @Aerospacesmith Год назад

      Just simple, cheap Allegro A4988 drivers. I've tried quite a few and these basic drivers are very "noisy" which is not normally desirable, but great for this.
