  • Ranchers could arguably be one of the most valuable stewards of our agricultural land to date. This documentary looks into the lives of colorado ranch families who face one of the most challenging times both economically and ecologically as they struggle to keep their most valuable long-time family inheritances afloat.

    Wonderful people doing wonderful things. I am a rancher in North Texas, and I get where they are at and going through. Honorable, hard working people. You can't have a ranch and not be a hard worker.

    Love ranch life. But its a hard life. Not like in the movies. Its work 24/7. I helped my uncles herding cattle and sheep during the summer breaks. Its hard work. You gotta have alot knowledge and big work ethic. Harsh winters. Hot summers. Long days. Not alot of money to go around. Hay. Feed. Fuel. Medicine. Etc etc.

    Awesome video. I hope one day my dream of becoming a rancher comes true. I would like to be the benefit of the doubt and not have to think that I would have to inherit the ranch to be a rancher. I would love to leave a inheritance for my kids instead. One day with the lords help. One day

    Just like you said it’s not about the money but as we all know. Money doesn’t buy happiness but let me tell you it might be a struggle but what you have it’s a lot more than a lot of people may even dreamed to have in a life time

    I agree with you Brandon Ball what she said is very false. When I graduate from high school in 2 years I'm going to buy my own land and ranch. And I am very average money wise. I'm ready to prove doubters wrong.

      Lissylou 02 if you're going to be in a position to buy ANY property straight out of high school, you're nowhere near "average" financially.

      seriously... it's depressing, but in the US (well the West at least where I've looked), if you want any kind of decent land and enough of it to have enough cows to pay the bills, you're gonna need 7 figures. I've read a lot of different figures on how much land you need per cow, and it depends a lot on the climate and soil... The worst I heard was one Wyoming rancher say he needed 30 acres per cow. At that rate, and to make any kind of money just to pay land tax, insurance and other unavoidable costs, your going to need a couple thousand acres.
      Doing a small homestead plus another business on the side is my new aspiration... it's a lot more attainable. Get some of that country livin' plus have something more secure at the same time.

    To have bought my grandad's 2,000 acre ranch (small) in OK in 1977 @ $400 per would have cost '$800,000, land only. To buy 100 bred grade cattle @ $1,000k per, another $100, 000 or so. Get the picture? Unless you inherit or win the Lottery, you end up being a hand, never an owner. Unless you have a real friendly banker or uncle.

      And now it's 10 ml or more depending on if it's by a ski resort or Yellowstone or something like that. You can't realistically make enough on cattle to pay for ranches now. We sold all our cattle over 10 years ago but didn't have a choice at the time. Now we are just trying to hang onto the land we have and hope to get back into the cattle business some day by starting some recreational side businesses. We do have some really nice horses for sale, all ages, that are very athletic and versatile. Check them out on our fb page Smokey Mountain Ranch

      It will be a big sell-out to mega-rich for investment purposes. And it is a shame - inherit or lotto - costs have risen so much. I can understand some costs, but not all. Anyway, my hopes are to - eventually - have a ranch of 100-200 acres (mix) for entire family to operate (about 10 of us).

    It's really arrogant for people to say you can't ranch unless you inherit it!

    • @killickfarms
      @killickfarms 9 лет назад +6

      +Brandon Ball I don't think it was meant to be arrogant.Its just the financial reality of farming and ranching throughout the world. To buy the land and make it pay is virtually impossible. I know because I'm the irish version of a rancher here in Ireland.

      There are a lot of programs and loans here in the U.S. To help people start farms and ranches because there's too many retiring and not enough taking their spot.

      +j kd'n lol work on a ranch and all my family either have a ranch or run a ranch! I'm just saying people need to be more supportive of those wanting to get into agriculture especially when all I hear is complaints how no younger adults want to get into it. No one can come out and start off on there own multi million dollar ranch. Never said that! But they can start small and get bigger!

    • @brandonball2381
      @brandonball2381 8 лет назад +1

      +j kd'n and like I said the VA has programs that helped me get started and so did the dept of agriculture. Just don't tell someone they can't be a rancher cause they didn't inherit it.

    600 cows to make a living with no expenses??? Even at a low profit of $100 per calf youd clear $60k per year. That's a damned good living for most folks

      Both my parents came from ranching and farming; mom's dad was a wheat and corn farmer, my dad ranching and farming. About nine or ten I helped for the first time a slaughter and processing of a steer my grandfather raised. It was both a solemn and celebratory event. I thought my cousins who grew up on farm and ranching operations to be the luckiest kids, they complained about the work and boredom, the grass is always greener on the other side of the fence. Finally in fifties I have carved out my own little piece and it is where I will spend my final days
