    You could make a sight tube. Mounting a round tube to your solar panel so the sunlight goes through the tube/ pipe.

    When we install our panels, we want to have an automatic system that will tilt and actuate so that the panels will track the sun during the day. Then at night the system will return to the morning track angel. The system has an tracking override to put it in 100% vertical when there are snow storms, to keep the panels clear.

      Yeah but how much?

      @@HiddenValleyHomestead Depends on the type. For a one piece frame like yours about $750. For the single row set up for 25 panels we want, about $850. But that means having only 25 panels not the 50 panels we would need for a manual tilt to get the same solar power per day and a smaller foot print.
      It needs two actuators (tilt and pan) solar tracker module, power hook-up and remote control unit.

      Yeah... thats about what I found pricewise as well... Not horrible but more than I had at the time...and how much power do they use? That would have been a more decisive factor.. cuz on those long cloudy days with little power I can't afford to lose a single KW!

      @@HiddenValleyHomestead a couple of watts when making the adjustment. But you more than double what you collect for the day.

    Put a can on the panel, then adjust to take out the shadow caused by the can.

    Good information...I hang my panels almost vertical in north Idaho's winters to allow most of the snow to slide off. Also I mounted the panels high enough above ground so in the winter I minimize the amount of snow shoveling required below the array. A ground array is the only way for solar arrays in snow country. I see a few roof mounted arrays around and can't image what they were thinking.
    I brush my chimney from a cleanout at ground level. Winter time adventers on a steep roof are not something I want to consider.

      Awesummmm..... I forgot to mention that detail!! Great point to keep em high enough off the ground as well! I used my snowblower to keep it clear! All great insight for snowbelt peeps!!!

    I have automated things like that so that a system checks every 10...60 minutes the right angle with a simple esp8266 and some light sensors up to 150.000 lux..

    • @HiddenValleyHomestead
      @HiddenValleyHomestead  Год назад

      Yeah I've seen the automated ones you can buy. I didn't have the money to get one and most people aren't tech or construction savvy enough like you and I are so I really feel having the ability to adjust the tilt is sufficient for our power needs. According to that website, the power you would get if turned on both axis isn't much more than just tilted for latitude so I figure why spend the money. Especially when my batts are topped off by 9am easily every day when it's clear. Now maybe on cloudy days or winter I could see absorbing every last photon of sun power with an automatic system...

    I would have thought you should be resetting the angle every month for optimum exposure.

    • @HiddenValleyHomestead
      @HiddenValleyHomestead  Год назад +1

      That website addresses that idea. I thought the same thing but the returns are minimal. 4 times a year are minimally better than just twice a year because of the low angles in the morning and evening! Thanks for watching!

      What do you mean? As in measure the output? I have a trimeric display that shows the voltage, amperage and percentage of power during charging as well as levels after charging ceases. And could you tell me what parameters to look for? Or what parameters I should be looking for besides highest voltage/amperage? If this is something you think people are under educated about lemme know and I'll do a video!! Thanks dude.
