Real journalism: 'Sideshow' by William Shawcross & at the same time- James Fenton's first on Viet Nam. I just rewatched 'The Killing Fields' & reminded of Dr Haing S Ngor's Auto-Bio 'A Cambodian Odyssey' (if Auto-Bio books are counted as valid here). That Man actually had a more difficult Life than who he'd portrayed.
As Shamberg had a 'Gopher' doing everything for his acceptance so it was easy- Malcovich's character in fact seemed Real- not a pouty reporter staring at the Military TOP who could leave him in the jungle & that's a good good option; don't get uppity in a state down contest with the Head of US Ops for the entire Country as if you can back it up (& w/ a Gopher who was lucky to Live through the CIA's f*k down that killed well over a Million peaceful Buddhists.

tip: In the beginning, Zhou is the higher leader of Mao, but he realized that Mao is the only person who can lead the Chinese Red Army and CCP. By that time, the highest leaders of ccp are Bo Gu、Li De、Zhou en Lai, Bo Gu and Zhou are international graduates, Li De is from the Soviet Union, all of them are unfamiliar with China's real situation, Mao is the only one who born and grown on China's land and know the situation very well. Therefore, Zhou persuaded Bo Gu and Li De give the lead position to Mao.

The situation in China is, the peasants occupy the most population in working class, not the industrial workers. Zhou, Bo Gu and Li De are simply copying Russian experience which is take the advantages of workers and capture the cities first. This cannot be done in China because the country is still a agriculture country, there are not enough workers in cities to fight. Mao is the only one who realized this point.
