Most Popular Computer Brands 1996 - 2023 (updated)

- Do you remember your first computer?
This video shows the performance of the top computer brands in terms of market share. Apple dropped by a lot in the late 90s, hence why they brought back Steve Jobs. I did not include them with the "others" because they have been very influential to the computer industry. Those that dropped to 0% were either acquired or left the computer market. Computer brands that sold less than 3% are part of the "others" group, those included brands like Sony Vaio, Microsoft Surface, Packard Bell and hundred others. In the 90s computer sales were based on price and performance instead of style since they were seen as a business tool.
I included popular computers from each year so you can see the progression of computer designs and so you can have an idea of what was selling at that time. I did not include many laptop images because it's difficult to see their progression other than thinner bodies.
You can find the Samsung Galaxy Book Pro here:

My first computer was a DELL that my dad brought back from a business trip and it came with Windows 7 or Vista, I don't even remember, but until last year it worked very well.
One complained about Windows Vista or 7 without first knowing the next versions, I literally just moved to 11 and I'm regretting a little bit of having done it.
I'm still on 10 for fear of that happening to me, but I would like to know where you got it so that when I change I have a reference.
Well, my Windows 11 is from BNH Software and despite my complaints, I haven't had any operational problems, but rather performance problems with some games.
Toshiba its faster and overall better than Lenovo. who agrees?
My first computer was Toshiba Satellite. 2 gb ram, 500 gb hard drive. It was the most costly one that time, and I still have it :)
lucky you my first computer was a Vic 20. 4K ram and a Tape drive.
the first computer that I learned on was an I don't know. We had a Dumb terminal in school. we used a modem to call it. there was a paper print out for the screen and saved our programs on a paper Tape. God I am old.
@souradeepghosh7559 IF you have not owned a Commodore, you have not had a real computer.
i still have a 59gb asus laptop
How much?
Toshiba was a really good computer, yes it was expensive..bought it in 98 for $1400...and had Windows 95 on it..
No one ever believes me when I tell them Others is a great computer brand.
😂
💀
My first computer was the Others brand and I loved it!!! 😂Lol No but seriously the first computer I had back as a kid in the 90's was a custom built Pentium II MMX 233 with Windows 95 32 MB of ram, a 24x CD-ROM drive and a 32 bit Video card Expert Color Pro it was called Lol. My dad paid about $2000 at the time knowing that computers were going to be the way of the future. I miss my dad he was the best dad ever!😭
Never had something else then Others. Makes absolutly no sence for me to buy a brand. I am building my own computers and ever did so. Thats the only way to have full control of all the parts.
Does Others play Crysis?
Watching this on my 2011 HP Pavilion notebook. It’s been on almost continuously since the spring of 2011.
still with original fan?
Plot twist you started writing this comment in 2017 😂😂
Toshiba its faster and overall better than Lenovo. who agrees?
@@ProtonXreviews Nothing beats a Thinkpad trackpoint.
My VERY first computer was a Timex Sinclair. It had 1K of memory. NO drive storage, not even tape. You entered a simple program of no more than 1,000 total characters. When you turned it off you could not save the program. Monitor was a TV. It cost $99 assembled or $49 if you wanted to assemble it yourself. Not very practical, but that's how I learned. My computer #2 was a Radio Shack CoCo. Still have it.
Otherwise known as a Sinclair ZX80.
My first love
I didn't realise how popular Lenovo are now - I always assumed they were like 4th of 5th most popular!
Cheaply made.
Lol that would be the others 🤣
Widely used in business
I thought Dell would be further down the list. The only Dells i see are old laptops from the 00s that people kept
@@jackjackum The XPS line I think is pretty popular though. I have a Dell myself so probably a bit biased 😂
My first computer was an eMachines T-Series tower with Windows XP Home Edition, running an Intel Celeron, 128 MB of RAM, 80GB Hard Drive, with a CD, DVD and floppy drive 😀
That must've been a dog! My first was a Dell Dimension with 2GB and a 120GB hard drive. Oh, and a 2.8Ghz Pentium 4. It was still usable into the late 2010s!
My first computer was 486 DX2 processor with 8 MB of RAM. The CPU didn't even need a fan back then. It had MS-DOS OS. Best computing experience I ever had till today.
Yes but win95.
@@skyhighsunlight It was years before Win95. DOS/Win 3.1
@msadah5768 i had 486 dx2 80mhz with windows 95. Mother bringed pc from work but yes when they were working it had msdos.
My first computer, which I got as a Christmas present 25 years ago, was a clone, which would belong with "others!"
Basically, all computers are clones they were based on the IBM 8088 processer even the ones made today. So, Compaq, HP, Hewlett Packard and ECT. were all IBM clones.
Toshiba its faster and overall better than Lenovo. who agrees?
Really exposes what IBM threw away in the early 80's. Wow what a huge mistake
They didn't think the home PC would take off, then it was too late
Lol.. ibm still exists.. they are renamed as lenovo after being sold to Chinese
@@relangisivakumar495 if so, does it really exist then?
My first computer was a Commodore VIC-20!
Commodore 64k here
Commodore 64 here
Mine is asus
1983 - Atari 1200XL
Mine was an Acorn Electron.
Still using an HP slimline w7 from 12/2011, it is on 24/7/365, only real problem I had with it was the power supply went bad after five years, replaced it and had no problems since, only upgraded the cpu, and the ram!
Hmm, but you know there has been no security support for years. Each time you connect to the Internet, you are easy prey for advanced hackers. Maybe you don't notice this because they use your computer as a relay. Only when the police knock on your door and ask you about internet crimes done with your PC, will you find out?
@@Jo-Jo8vsOr, they just use Linux.
(P.s. Music is "Epic Motivation" & "Epic Motivation 2" by music artist "Roman Cano")
Toshiba got on the charts selling only laptops. Legendary.
All of these brands are laptops sellers, no one except apple does such thing as selling the whole pc
Literally almost every single one of these brands make pcs
TOSHIBA is the king, 👑 respect to the TOSHIBA 🙏🏻
I have Toshiba Qosmio G50 laptop from 2008 with amazing desing amazing speaker's by Harman kardon, with Windows 10 Pro 500 gb Samsung SSD 860 and 4GB RAM DDR2 and the laptop is amazing his works perfectly !
Toshiba its faster and overall better than Lenovo. who agrees?
Others is my favorite brand
😂😂
Finally another upload from Captain Gizmo! I'm wondering what took him so long...
Also where is Gateway on this list?

The data videos were getting few views so I was trying out other types of videos, but those got even less views. So I would end up deleting them so they don't drag the channel down.
Great effort. 👍
It would be much appreciated if the "others" category was elaborated, like which brands comprised "others"?
My first microcomputer was Cybernet. It was an American-made model. It enabled me to learn to use Microsoft Windows XP Professional like a computer technician, and it had Microsoft Office XP Professional that enabled me to work higher than just a keyboard specialist (that is, a typist with strong keyboarding skills). In 2017, I bought my first Dell microcomputer, but replaced it with an advanced Dell microcomputer that works great, as you may read my accurately-typed comment. I call my microcomputer my Keyboard, because it is my powerful typewriter. I enjoy using it a lot. Keep the shows coming through!🙂
Starting in 1996 INSTEAD of 1986 devalues this video.
Computer Wars in 1980's were extreme and should have been included.
Yes after 94-95 it’s the pc compatible era so obviously pc wins
@@bobmorane2082 Yeah, it ended with Amiga. MAC were never relevant. PC were alone the last 30 years after Commodore went bankrupt.
Atari ST were nowhere looked at a competitor either, MAC were never a competitor to anything.
It were vs Commodore from 1982-1994-95.
In 1980's there were also ZX Spectrum, BBC Micro, Dragon 64 and other in on the computer war.
Toshiba its faster and overall better than Lenovo. who agrees?
My first computer was a Commodore VIC 20. I then upgraded to a Commodore 64 and then an Amiga 128. My first PC type I had was a Radio Shack Tandy 3000 NL I bought in 1989.
This chart starts after the death of the Tandy line. But if it had started in about 87 it would have had to include those. They outsold many other brands and nearly bought Compaq when Compaq was having a rough patch. Lots of other great brands that weren't on here since it started in 96 and many had come and gone by then.
My first work computer was an Apple 2e, upgraded to the first IBM PC with a HD in the twin cities. My first personal computer I built.
Presently built my own desktop Dell laptop and no name tablets
I want to get me an "Others" computer
Lol
yes true but apple computers are expensive so brands like lenovo or acer are cheaper@@haoiliforyou
i ave One, an you could too. Only buy components and build them. Take the Quality in your Own Hand.
Commodore Vic 20 got me into computers. I wish I still had it, or a Commodore 64. Some fun, simple games back in the day.
What consists of "Others"? Home built or custom builds from scratch? My first PC was by a mail order company called Compu-Add, Then a Gateway 2000, Then 2 home builds, then Dells and Macs.
I’m surprised with the amount of people (including myself) I see using Apple I’m surprised Apple wasn’t higher on the list
because Apple computers are expensive for some people in countries outside Europe and North America and some rich countries in Asia. nowadays Apple realized that and they started to compete with reasonable prices
@@mansurdoradoI see
I really like this video. It explains a lot in a short period of time.
I like how people back in the day, knew not to buy apple.
It is also applicable in these day.
Evidently you don’t even have to "buy Apple" for it to live rent-free in your head. 🌚
Yeah Apple products are a ripoff, I only prefer IPhones because in my opinion they’re more ez but any other product is bad
@@Waterfirerockair such as
Apple was just almost about to go out of business back then until Steve Jobs came back. Apple products aren't ripoffs today. It all comes down to personal preference.
Around 2003, IBM sold its PC devision to Lenovo, thats how it popped up in the chart. Also around the same time, India became a consumer power for computers.
Around 2012, smart phones became very smart, and sell of desktops declined, leading "others" brand to fall behind, as big chunk of sales were laptops.
I really want to buy an "others" computer, but I cant find it anywhere. Eould someone kindly help?
My first computer was a Compaq pentium II, 128 MB of RAM 10gb hard drive, year 1999
I wish framework made it to this list
it's better to omit "others" if it's a bunch of several brands
I think others is largely the generic no name pc clones that were budget options. They were sold at electronic stores or online.
I'm using Lenovo! 😀😁
Me too
Toshiba its faster and overall better than Lenovo. who agrees?
I have been using Other's for 36 years now and so far nothing much has changed and it is still a good machine.
Having built a custom rig, I have successfully bought a PC from “others”. And hope my LG gram too comes under “others”
My first computer was a C64! Using tapes at first, only after a year I got a diskdrive. It was an awesome machine at it's time!
My first was an Atari Mega ST with 2MB RAM and a 30MB external HD. But it had built-in MIDI ports!
my first was a 286 in a draw . built for g m called the cams machine . about $25000. crazy huh. my first computer at home was a tandy 486sx with a 120 meg hd, 512k of video ram, and 4 meg of ram. later i added a total of 20 meg of ram, a second hd, an ati video card ,a sound blaster 16 sound card and a 2 speed cd- rom. than an upgrade to the cpu to a 486dx-75. what a power house!! hahaha 😂
Wow, I didn't expect that back in the days, Lenovo and HP were already available when the computer was released, and after the release of the laptop, those 2 brands immediately became popular. It is proven that now I often see laptops from hp/Lenovo on average because of that.
I'm surprised by how popular Dell still is.
great statistic video
Over the years, large companies have succeeded in removing small or other competitors from the market, which means their empire and monopoly will put pressure on the people.
still using lenovo G-40 from 2014, its still rocking out to this day. This is why they're GOAT
Got my Dell in 2008. After few upgrades and replaced parts still just as quick as anything new Ive used today
My first computer was that iMac in late 90s early 2000s it was orange 🍊 colored
Man, I dunno who this +Others brand is, but they must make some KILLER PCs
My desktop is an Asus and my laptop is a Lenovo, so that puts me at the bottom of the list and the top of the list at the same time hehe! My 1st computer was a BBC Micro from 1981, from the early age of home computers. If we're talking the era in this video (1996-2023), then my 1st PC I had was from a local PC shop, so would have been classed as 'others' on this list. It was a Pentium II with 350MHz, March 1999
Others control the market of computers
I'm gonna rush out and buy stock in "Others"
My first computer was assembled by Positivo (from Brazil). It was quite a good computer, it came with Windows Vista but we asked to install Windows XP and then Windows 7. It worked very well until a few years ago when we needed to clean it up from time to time because of bad RAM contacts. Today we have 3 laptops (2 Acer and one Samsung) and a desktop made by Pichau (another Brazilian assembler).
I've always wanted to try an Others.
I'm surprised Gateway, e-Machines, Packard Bell were not on the list outside of "Others"
I bought my MB Pro back in 2013, with full on RAM and SSD at 1TB. Cost an arm for sure, I really thought I was crazy when I bought. But I still use it every day, watching this video and commenting with it right now, and I don't regret that 11 years ago decision at all.
I'll never forget the day Lenovo overtook PlusOthers to become the number 1 brand.
Dude, Gateway had to be around 10% or more at some point in early 2000s. How is it not on there?
HP Compaq Presario SR1050NX, my first machine.
I don't remember what was the manufacturer of my first 486 PC, but the first PC that I bought with my own money was a Dell Vostro 1310 in 2009 that came with Windows Vista. It still works to this day with Ubuntu 16 (I think) on it. Maybe if I get a more basic distro, I can put something more recent on it, but I don't use this one any more
I had a 133mhz Pentium running Win95 made by this cool Mom and Pop shop called PC Corner in rural SC. So much fun on that thing.. 😊
I've PCs Desktop since 1988 and I never bought pre-assembled PCs. Today, there is somone that buy desktop pc branded? They're all laptop.
Gateway 2000 was my starter computer. Then I got a Dell and every computer after that I built myself. Good times.
9 months late but since you asked: My first 'computer' was an Amstrad PCW8256. My first Windows based computer was a Dell Optiplex with 4 GB of ROM and 256 MB of RAM. It had an Intel Pentium 4 (2.4 GHz) processor, which sounded big at the time. I also had no idea how close Apple came to falling out of the game altogether, Jesus.
Actually, all brands are others. The only difference is that they only have a logo.
"Others" when every corner store had a clone.
My first computer in the 80’s was an Apple II-e with floppy disc.😅
I am wondering who the heck is still using Apple computers in 2024 lol...lol!
TOSHIBA, TOSHIBA IS THE LEGEND TOSHIBA IS THE BOSS OF THE LAPTOPS, i have Toshiba Qosmio G50 and his works perfectly, i love TOSHIBA
I Love HP computers
My first computer was an eMachines EL1360g, 4gb ram I upgraded to 8, 500gb hard drive I upgraded to 1 tb ssd, with a dvd cd drive. I still use it
We have Lenovo PCs at work and they're really good quality, have good warranty support, and it's easy to install the BIOS/Driver updates with the software tools they provide. Personally, if I'm going to get my own laptop I usually get a Razer one because I like the build quality. I like the their trackpads a lot. If I'm going to build a desktop I usually pick parts from between ASUS, Gigabyte, and MSI.
Someone should do a video that starts way earlier to include commodore and such
Im a bit confused ia packard bell the same as HP ? Because we had a 486 called packard bell
No, two different brands.
Not even related at all .... Where would that idea even come from????
PB was a cheap bulk retail brand that was basically the e-Machined of it's day. Never had any quality at all. HP on the other hand at one point was the most respected of all, even in the corporate world with high volume sales.
At work I have an acer and my coworkers use HP too. At home I still have a Fujitsu Amilo and an Apple MacBook Pro. I had an Lenovo ThinkPad but gave it to my aunt.
Need to run this again just with "Others" broken down.
I’m shocked at Apples market share now vs. early 2000s vs 80s.
Lenovo is also crazy popular now.
My first laptop was a Dell, and every one I've had after has been HP
My first PC in 2006 was a non-brand. An 80 gig built in a small computer shop. Other than that I have had emachines and HP
I think my first PC was from a brand I can’t quite remember, probably an Others.
And in 2012, I bought my first laptop, an ASUS. It broke earlier this year.
Now I’ve ordered a Lenovo. Let’s see…
I own a Acer laptop and I love it. The only thing I hate about it is that the touch pad for it stopped working but that's okay because I prefer using a mouse instead anyway. I don't understand why its on the bottom of the list.
I never heard of brand names "Others"
In 45 years I have had tones of "others" computers and non with a brand
My first laptop was a Microsoft Surface Laptop Studio purchased back in 2021.
Gateway was super big back in the day and should shown on this video. it shouldn't be just under others.
I know own a Gateway laptop 11" . It is nice.
Packard Bell, 20GB HDD (was blue coloured too, from PC WORLD) around 2002?
My first computer was an Apple IIc
Lenovo laptop since 2014 ssd m.2 usb-c
My first computer was a Sinclair ZX81. I had the 16kb memory expansion pack too.
That was probably around '82 or '83...
Later I got the ZX Spectrum (84/85)
After that I got a Tulip AT PC (89 or so), and in '94 a 486.
My first computer in the 90's was one I built myself. I've always stuck to non proprietary.
dozen or so years ago the big brands seemed to offer more bang for the buck than no-names.
And what about handmade computers or computers made by sellers? I have one and it hasn't any brand
My first computer was a Commodore 64. Then later in the 1990 I bought a PC clone built from a local puter builder called BetaComp. Then in the 2000s i built my own AMD system. Now I own a Gateway laptop and HP desktop.
My first laptop was a Others Press any key to boot from CD or DVD, and it costed me $3! The Press any key to boot from CD or DVD laptop was great, it came with 20MB of RAM, 3.5KB of storage, and I ran OthersOS on it. It's the best OS bc it only takes 0.1KB of storage.
What happened to Gateway?
Please do a video of no. Of users of different android versions.
My first computer is a Apple II build 1978. Still have this
Lumping brands like Packard Bell and Gateway into "Others" is a copout. These brands should be listed separately on your next update. (My first two computers were Gateways.)
Notice how the graph barely moves in 2008
Jee I wonder why
Interesting how “others” declined suddenly in the last 8 years. Uncannily like what happened to the car industry a century ago. Hundreds of car manufacturers went bust leaving only the dozen or so well known brands we know today.
What 'others' mean? Clone n generic computer brand?
I didnt realize Lenovo was so prevalent today.
Oh yes my favorite brand Others
2014 - The 'brands' started offering deals to the big firms, the firm I worked for went Lenovo, great laptops even back then and so cheap nearly everybody had one in the company.
