So beautifully played, the violinist especially is so sensitive and musical. But I’ve never heard this played with such transparency; every part weaving it’s line in perfect balance

I’ve heard recordings of this same Trio elsewhere, substituted with a harpsichord and cello, instead of a fortepiano and viola da Gamba. Comparing them, and hearing the difference… this recording has *so much more* soul to it. It sounds so much more mysterious and desperate, especially in the third movement. Not frantic and anxious, as it would if it were A440, but as if some sort of grand conspiracy is unfolding as the beholder listens as intently as this piece demands
@@Roescoe Because it's a sonata for flute, violin, and basso continuo. Two obligato instruments plus continuo makes 3. The continuo consists of the gamba and fortepiano. The bass line is played by the gamba and doubled by the left hand of the fortepianist, whose right hand improvises an accompaniment. This work is NOT scored for fortepiano. The use of fortepiano is simply a whim of the performers. The fortepiano is too loud to fulfill the role of a continuo instrument.

A truly wonderful performance. Although the sound recording is excellent and rich, it seems that perhaps the volume in the other instruments predominates the Traversflöte in the balance. (?) Many thanks to everyone.
Thank you, now I know I'm not the only one who thought that. I love NBS and I love this overall performance, except for the fact that the flute sounds so soft compared to the other instruments, ESPECIALLY the violin. I honestly think it's mostly a mic issue. The Baroque flute is definitely softer than the modern flute, but not that soft. The violin and flute parts are suppose to interweave seamlessly, almost like one unit, and yet they sound out of balance throughout the entire recording. Oh well. Still enjoyable, and I like the choice of a Silbermann 1740s style fortepiano. Gives the piece an extra warmth and darkness.
It's actually not a cello, it's a viola da gamba ("viola of the leg"), from a different family than the cello. This one has 7 strings, they also frequently have 6. The bowing is done underhand (palm facing out), whereas on a cello it is overhand (palm facing in).
I've been twice to Amsterdam (beautiful city) but I must confess I haven't been to the Concertgebouw. Are they playing in the entrance hall or a lobby? Anyway, the performance is divine.
This was perfectly lovely. It may just be me, but I felt as though the volume of the violin and flute overshadowed the viola and harpsichord ,at times times they sounded rather “muddy.,,” please I mean no disrespect. Your downloads are a gift to those of us who love Bach.
