"Doubting Thomas" is a term derived from the story of the Apostle Thomas in the Christian New Testament. Thomas, one of the twelve apostles of Jesus, is best known for his initial doubt about Jesus's resurrection.
    The Biblical Story
The story is found in the Gospel of John (John 20:24-29). After Jesus's crucifixion and resurrection, He appeared to His disciples. However, Thomas was not present at the time and expressed doubt when the other disciples told him they had seen the risen Christ. Thomas famously said, "Unless I see the nail marks in His hands and put my finger where the nails were, and put my hand into His side, I will not believe."
Eight days later, Jesus appeared again to the disciples, and this time Thomas was present. Jesus invited Thomas to touch His wounds and to stop doubting and believe. Thomas responded by calling Jesus "My Lord and my God," which is seen as a profound declaration of faith. Jesus then said, "Because you have seen me, you have believed; blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed."
    Symbolism
"Doubting Thomas" has since become a phrase used to describe someone who is skeptical or refuses to believe something without direct, physical evidence. The story is often interpreted as a lesson in faith, emphasizing the importance of belief even without tangible proof.
    Artistic Depictions
In art, Thomas is often depicted in the moment of his doubt, touching or reaching out to touch Jesus's wounds. This scene is commonly referred to as "The Incredulity of Saint Thomas" and has been a popular subject in Christian art throughout history.
