@EpicLightMedia : Honest opinion? This was pretty good. Excellent even considering the fact that this was your first short film as a director. The most important part is that I was invested throughout the film and was also uncomfortable during the awkward situations. That all comes down to the writing and acting in this short, the 2 absolute pillars of this film. On a more technical note, the lighting was fantastic. Absolutely fitting for the mood of the film. The score and sound design, I didn't really notice. Which in my opinion, is the best for any movie. Compositions were as good as it can be for a comedy - they were simple yet did not feel overused or monotonous. The only few things that "bothered" me somewhat was that the pacing was a bit inconsistent at times (meaning that the "rhythm" set in the begining got a bit jageddy in the second half, if that makes sense?), some of shots were cut a bit too fast making it feel a bit too rushed at times and a few of the closeup shots could have been framed a bit better to register the awkward tension bubbling up at the end. I know for a fact from your behind the scenes video that you could only shoot for 1 day and couldn't get all the shots you may have wanted for it and that has no doubt affected the finer polishing of this short. All of my "gripes" come down to how much I otherwise enjoyed the film, and would understand if it comes off as nitpicky. All in all, a solid 7.5 from me. Definitely rewatchable. Here's hoping to see more films from you and getting to see you polishing your skills to it's finest. ~ An Honest (Introverted) Critic P.S.: Please don't let my fiance find out that I am going around honestly critiquing on the internet... again. Unlike Tom, I can't afford to to break up now. I have invested too much on the wedding already! Also, I subscribed because I don't like people telling me what to do! XD
So good! But Soo Good that I could not stop looking around for rigging. The lighting was next level and all I wanted to find was the Combo stand, Balloon Clamp, 8x8 that was used to shape the light! Love it! Cant wait for the BTS to answer all my questions! Bravo to everyone, this was so well done!
I was torn with empathy and cringe, it truly transcends emotional boundaries. It was like a slow motion train wreck unfolding directly in front of me, I couldn't look away. This was stellar, love it.
After watching the making-of video I was ready for everything but the story to be great (like in many short films). But I was wrong: The story was ALSO great and very engaging! A great short film!
I can't imagine you wouldn't be okay with a little criticism (and you're not getting ANY here in the comments yet) - from watching many, many of your videos, I know you're an intellectually honest, curious, open-minded, learning-oriented person, so I'm gonna be Mr. Honest Unfiltered Bad Breath TOM here and say... this is really... over-lit. It looks like a commercial, through and through. And that makes perfect sense, because that's where all your background is from. But it doesn't look like a movie at all. To me. Sure, that's an opinion. But even though I really hate hearing DPs use the term "source-y"... I just gotta use it here. The hair light on the host-couple is overcooked and unmotivated - "source-y". The guest-couple look much more natural. The actors are lovely and engaging and the story, writing, and twist were really fun. The handheld or shoulder work in the kitchen was perfect (minus some focus issues), and the lighting there also felt much simpler and more natural, yet appropriately dramatic. The zolly shots during the exit were subtle and added a lot. So... there's my compliment-criticism-compliment sandwich for you. Keep it up - you're teaching, learning, and you'll only get better every time.
It hooked me. So smooth. I was instantly into the story. I had to remind myself to critique the sound, lighting, camera work, editing, etc. Nice work. Hope to see the BTS!
haha, this was great! I just kept watching. I the beginning, I just clicked to check what it was about, but I stuck to the whole thing and it was so engaging, amazing work! :-)
one small cc: the kitchen lighting should have been more contrasty (and maybe more like a top light with the side spill controlled to have a more intimate mood) to fit the story better, otherwise great job for a second short film 👍
This was a fun skit! I love skits that lean into awkward social situations like this. IMO, the "punch line" at the end fell a little flat. Probably because I saw it coming before it arrived, and it felt a bit overly explained by the girlfriend. I think it could have been more nuanced by having her give a few arm pumps, high five her friends, and then sigh "... he had the WORST breath." Rather than explain everything. It felt kind of like an exposition dump.
I haven‘t even watched the video yet, but I‘m soo glad you are back! 🙏🏼 You have been missed very much! I hope everything is fine for you personally and you have just been busy ;)
I liked the acting and plot in general BEFORE the twist. Ending made it a bit flat for me. Lightning and composition looked very much alike and advertisement. Overall it was enjoyable. Thanks for that
Agree. I was hoping for the characters to snap out of the strange ovely expressive and underlining style of speech when they had finished their charade, but they just kept on going. My frame of reference is Finnish, though, where Aki Kaurismäki is considered a form of comedy (characters barely talk or emote). It's hard for me to enjoy the SNL school of American comedy anymore, where everything is over the top and even the slightest twist has to be explained to the audience. Otherwise the cinematography, blocking and lighting supported the sketch very well and the dialogue was cut excellently.
I love this!!
Remarkable Storytelling and Cinematography 👏😌
Went slient for 8 months, and came back with a banger! Such a great Short! Love to see more!
"The sky IS blue"... My favorite line. Lol.

Oh wow thanks so much!!! I literally went to goodwill and bought cool paintings and furniture.. it was the majority of the budget
Sounds like you know what your doing. I watched the film again and again appreciating the simplicity of it.@@EpicLightMedia

This was so good 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼

EPIC LIGHTING
Will gives me Aldi-brand Taron Egerton vibes, and I love it.
perfect! as Hollywood budget comedy film, you should break down the film as light, sound, and blocking and every detail in production
Funny stuff, well made! 👍
Yay!!! You guys are still alive! 😂
Hahaha, good stuff! (Sans art.) I can relate to Tom so much. Especially the bad breath
The return of the king
I was distracted by the visuals then the story then the visuals then the story. Epic Work on Lighting the Media
Nice story.
Buckle up for the turn! hahahaha
Nice film :)

Hmm, after this video, I'm not sure if all the commenters are doing a Tom or Sarah... I don't know who to trust anymore!
Best
Epic light is back!!!!
The focus puller must have needed therapy after this shoot.
Awesome work! What lenses did you use?
Sigma cine zooms 50-100 and 18-35
