    Fellow non-subscriber here. Great content as always!
    Something I'm curious about regarding a storyboarded commercial is how do you typically shoot your shot list during any given day? Do you follow the typical process of filming all the wider shots first and end on close ups?
    I know from personal experience that working with just sunlight outdoors is a challenge on all my personal narrative projects because the sun is never where you want it for that Wide -> Medium -> Close shot order to be practical at times. Are there any other extra considerations concerning the commercial look that you tend to plan for when choosing what angle(s) to shoot next?
    Thanks!

    • @EpicLightMedia
      @EpicLightMedia  3 года назад +4

      Yes! We shot the wide stuff and worked our way in. It’s easier to make the light look consistent on the close ups. Typically you will shoot wides in the morning and fake the nice light for the tighter stuff.

    Guys, I love your stuff. I started shooting my own stuff (instead of production company) in 2017. I had no clue as to the technical aspects of this craft. Between your gear reviews, technique lessons, it set me on the right track. I have shot over 250 ads for clients, I filmed a 3 minute short in 2019, and I just finished my first feature. We got distribution and we are now on Amazon Prime. We are in preproduction for our second feature. This one will actually have a budget. LOL. I just wanted to thank you for all of the awesome information you cats produce. Just as another fact, my feature premiered on my 50th birthday. You have helped an older dude change his life, and I wanted to just say thank you.! Great stuff. I love your work. The name of my film is Matched. Can you please do a video on how to capture proper sound indoors and outdoors, the differences, and the role of a sound mixer? I'm really tired of seeing high video quality on youtube videos and bad sound and basically you guys and Gerald Undone are the only people who get it right.

    • @EpicLightMedia
      @EpicLightMedia  3 года назад +3

      For commercials we hire a sound mixer. But honestly it’s simple...this is going to sound too easy but buy a super expensive mic like the MKH50 or MKH416 and place it as close to the subject as you can. If the mic is a foot or less from your subject that’s usually best. We don’t use a sound mixer and just plug the mic straight into the camera and make sure we don’t clip. That’s it... we’ll in post we do some compression and EQ but that’s easy.

      @@EpicLightMedia I guess as an IATSE sound department member, I’m frustrated by all the bad sound advice given by people who are video focused. Great idea to post this, thank you ! A pleasure to see a set, after being away from any for so long.
    Thousands of short stories to tell about incidents occuring on my filmings... the list could go for days. Some positive, some negative, but always with a (somehow) happy ending.
    In your BTS, we're given the opportunity to witness a great team at work. This seems like the production we all dream of.
    In all your explanations and informations, you forgot a tiny thing : talents must understand what (the heck) is going on, at any time, at any moment, for any person/position. It's crucial talents also get the big picture (even though it's a bit blurry), for many many reasons. One being they often don't get hired for the whole filming, but just a portion of it or several sections that are spread apart in schedule. But, and this is the tricky part, every single actor/actress must behave (and act, of course !) like they've lived the whole story, like they've seen the all actions occur, like they were told all was told from minute 1 to minute X. They never must seem misplaced or "disoriented", even though they're to spend a single hour or five minutes on the actual set... and it's so hard to achieve : being there for a short moment, but acting like you've always been a part of the action. And something that is barely taught, if not never, in schools (any "cinema" school, to keep it short), except in my workshops where it makes for a big "chapter". Proving relevant.
