    Every time I see this I can't help but think that Hugh should have told the producers that story about his name so they could stick it on a card. Might have got some points out of it. 😂

      We thought about it in the writers room, but we gave Hugh some good truths to say for the programme already. Instead, we made up the one syllable name story for Katherine knowing that Hugh could also incorporate his interesting Equity name change story.

    My Mum's parents hated names being shortened so called her Joan in the assumption that it's impossible to abbreviate a single syllable name. Other than to her parents she's universally known as "Jo".

    I think another thing they failed to take into account is there is the name the parents gave, and the name the person goes by. Robert, might go as bob, Steven as Steve etc.

      no she was claiming to be basing it on someone named Bob and Steve. While they're commonly short for other names, I have met plenty of people of which their names on their birth certificates were bob or steven, not the longer names. Used to work with a Bob at a guard shack, was never a dull moment either. Only thing I miss about my old job in fact.

    Just choose a version of your name that has more syllables? Rob -> Robert, Steve -> Steven, John -> Jonathan. Those are all technically the same names.

    Maybe she doesn't realise that very few people are just called 'Bob' or 'Steve'. I don't like samie-names on twins (Jenny and Benny, Ashley and Aislyn etc). I don't even really like alliteration families but they're not my kids and I'm sure they grow up perfectly untraumatised anyway LOL.

(Nicknames are fair game, they're nicknames). I don't understand taking issue with Aislyn. It's a good name unless your twin sister is Ashley. People get confused with twins, let alone samie-namies.

      @@cijmo I'm not saying any name with a 'y' in is bad, just the unnecessary additions of 'y's to existing names, which seems especially prevalent in the US (usually replacing 'i's with 'y's). Aisling is a beautiful name, Aislyn is an unpleasant bastardisation

    I don't know I kind of agree with her. I personally believe that giving your child a very common or very simple name such as Bob, Lee, Kyle, Beth, Sue, Jill... Even if it's a longer more common name like Britney or Jackson, it seems like it makes it harder for children to develop their own identity and a sense of humor weakness or personality, and it's harder for them to be noticed for their individuality, whenever they have that comment of a name because they end up being shoved into a sea of other kids with the same name who they get confused for or who they end up being just like. I mean just think about it are you more likely to remember someone who you met once or twice who was relatively average who was named Tom, or would you be more likely to remember him if his name was Truman? Because let's be real, how many people do you know named Truman?

      In my experience, most Americans don't care for politically correct or appropriation comedy either. The ones who do are just the louder minority. I will agree that Hollywood is going downhill, but that's because Hollywood is ran by the "woke" loud minority.
