- Tradition is something that's important to uphold, but that doesn't mean you should be averse to change. Like everything in life, there is a balance, and Little Witch Academia shows us the good that can come from maintaining that balance. I wanted to compare it with a work that doesn't have that balance, Things Fall Apart, and see how they both are the same... but different.

awesome perspective on one of my favorite shows! Something I noticed after watching your video is that I think one of the biggest traditions that Akko breaks is the tradition of a single hero, the standard "chosen one" cliche that we see in stories like Harry Potter or Avatar/Korra. At the end, Akko learns the meaning of community, acknowledges all the efforts and dreams of her friends (esp Diana), and realizes that her dream of reviving magic is not hers alone, and is something that she should share with those around her. Even though the staff chose Akko alone, Akko chooses to share her final fight with her friends. Not to mention, the idea of a "chosen one" is not just present in LWA but in the TV/book industry as a whole, so in a sense, it is not just Akko, but the show itself that is breaking tradition and rejecting the lone hero trope.

Your points are very interesting, but the canon-on-purpose parallels are all about...animation.
You see, Trigger animators are all veterans, including a big amount of ex-Gainax stuff. They saw hand drawn animation peak at 80's, in Akira. They witnessed Pixar first CGI movie, and they are now part of a hybrid type of animation, that often mix up both worlds, not always for the best results. Thinking about it they created LWA, their personal views on what means to be one animators, what animation means, and how important tradition is to the medium.
First we have Akko, a little girl that saw Chariot as a child, feeling enchanted with magic. It is important to re-watch LWA and replace *everytime* they say "magic" to "animation", because that was the real intention. Akko is one wannabe animator/creator. After her abrupt introduction to this world, Akko gets angry at how "serious" the academia is, and how they are always aiming for the high standards, instead of having fun with their work. Luna Nova is indeed very conservative, willing to not have a penny as long it does not hurt their pride. Enter Diana, the very incarnation of one skilled, natural artist. She does not mince words and is constantly rewarded as the best one around in the school, visible not having any joy at doing it so.
The tension between those two will pay up at the finale, being the conclusion of Trigger toughs on animation industry. But more about that later. After some hijinks and frustrated attempts of being one proper witch, Akko discovers the concept of the " seven words" inside her staff. Only waking up those words she will be able to summon one world-changing magic, her dream to begin with.
Those words are obviously the steps to make your work turn into something worth. Those are, in order ; *Striving to your place. Working instead of dreaming. Not comparing yourself to others. Being patience. Fusing the new and the old. Being grateful. Connecting with others*.
Yes, Trigger gave us their own recipe for success, disguised as magical, fictional words. That takes us to one of the most important parts of the show; Croix. The not-so-subtle take on CGI animation, wants results and maximum performance , while having no desire for something spiritual or barely interesting. The fact Croix is the only way to have sponsors is also a nice jab on how industries are more interested in the technology than animation itself nowadays.
After some time we discover, however, that chariot never achieved the last word (connecting wit others). That because, instead of doing her own thing, she became obsessed with being bigger and bigger, stealing people's magic on the way. Now, I don't know if that was some deep commentary on industries, but i can't help to see this as some kind of Walt Disney deal, where their company is so flashy and big that it gets to the point where they steal creative power. Akko unhealthy obsession with "being Chariot" may just be a signal about that, later learning to just be Akko instead.
That only turns possible with help of Diana, the big motif in the series. After some serious friction, Akko and Diana learn to work together, seeing magic/animation as something beyond tradition or trends.
And that's the big moral of LWA, animation should be respected for what it is, not by how it's done, achieving nothing but joy and happiness at the end, a true world-changing magic. No doubt why Croix failed at the Triskelion test, not being able to see magic in one meaningless stick, considering it a mere joke, while Akko, beholding it, put her learning on the 7 words and changed everything around her. And, after all, that's not what one artist does with a pencil anyway?

I highly recommend you to watch "The Making of Little Witch Academia" , uploaded on RUclips. There you can see the producers explaining their parallels between magic and animation. In the same fashion, in many interviews and public posts over the internet, Little witch Academia producer, Tattun , confirmed it several times. Reason enough to the team giving their newbie female animators the nickname of "Akko", something mentioned in their official art book.

This canon explanation and this video's analysis has lots of parallels. So, even though it was designed for interpreting the animation industry, it still applies to various other aspects of society and life. Which, I feel, is the real goal/overarching theme of the anime, not specifically about animation. The animation industry's journey was likely the model for the story.

My brother in Christ, the seven words also represent the Seven Holy Virtues. Akko is not simply on a quest to revive magic but to also bring righteousness.
Humility, Charity, Chastity, Gratitude, Temperance, Patience, and Diligence. All seven of the words overlap with these in one way or another.
I know this is an old video, but it is honestly one of my favorite videos essays on RUclips. I find myself rewatching it every few months because of how well you described something that I could never put into words myself. I really enjoyed both Little Witch Academia and Things Fall Apart, but never would have thought to connect the two. I think we all need to be more like Akko and look for dumb things in our world and find ways to change them for the better. You really did a great job!

Lawstorant At best (or worst depending on how you view it) there are maybe some nitpicks about certain things being left unexplained (if Akko used her last spell to free the fish during the exams, how did she transform back at the end?) but that’s it. Nothing even remotely capable of lessening my enjoyment of such an immeasurably charming and loveable series.

I remember reading this book in High School
I had to read it for a college history class. One of our assignments was to rewrite it! Not a summary or analysis, literally rewrite the book to make it shorter. It was pretty tough, but I gained more appreciation for it as a result.
I loved things fall apart its themes and lessons can be applied to almost any story involving some sort of change.
I read Things Fall Apart in my 10th grade English class, and our project regarding it was to make a movie trailer. It was the first group project of the year... and also the first one where I was completely snubbed by the others in my group. Since I liked writing and reading, I was asked to read through the book for moments that could be used for powerful scenes, as well as dialogue to overlay on said scenes.
I did so, and came up with something that should've been a nice, two minute trailer. They didn't like my contributions, and told me to make a title image instead, so I found an interesting looking Font, wrote out "Things Fall Apart," and then edited it painstakingly so that the words would shatter and drift downwards, with the "p" in "Apart" swinging down to look like a noose. They told me it looked stupid, and that I should make up some fake credits for the actors and such.
Then my group turned in the project, claiming I'd done *_NOTHING_* and using every last bit of the work they'd told me was trash. Bunch of stupid fuckers, though-- I'd talked with the teacher about my stuff the entire way, _and_ about how they'd bitched at me despite not doing any work in class and leaving all the busywork to me while they did the fun part (recording the scenes).
Lucky me, sucks to be them, I got an A for my contributions, while they got Cs for trying to claim my work as theirs.

I really liked it too but I remember everyone else in my Sophmore Class hated it saying the main character is nothing but an abusive asshole and such, that is what honestly disappoints me about a lot of kids and people today since they can appreciate old litterature since they always seem to fail to understand you need to look at stories like these from the point in history and from how the culture would also act and then it starts making sense when you look at the book from Native Nigerian tribes just when British settlers and missonaries first began arriving and how what you might have built up for years and all the tradition you kept going can suddenly and easily just crumble as time moves on and people begin to abandon old ways and beliefs

Excellent review of LWA, one of the best on youtube! When LWA series first came out couple of years back, I dismissed it as some Harry Potter ripoff made just for kids, and it is that superficially. But I kept coming back to it because its characters and themes do have a great deal of depth but I never understood why!

Wow I knew the main plot was good but I didn't know it was THIS good.
I've saved this video in watch later for like a year because I thought it was going to be a critique of LWA, today I remember about it now, and I was thinking "it would be really funny if this video I've been wanting to see for so long is not an actual review................." Big bruh moment
You know, this is what I thought when i watch this. But the difference is that I used the short story The Lottery, instead of Things Fall Apart. Both of the stories have the theme about tradition, but The Lottery doesn't dwell with modernism alot. Another story, although it was a short film, that talks about this theme is Strange Fruit. It dwells in to tradinaltioms alot and, pun intended, leaves you hanging.
I haven't read Things Fall Apart but I have read The Emperor of All Maladies, lol. Great read if you're into biology/oncology.

This video was total bait click because I got really curious what will you critic about this show but it turns our that meaning is true but in other way :d
I think your analysis is (mostly) wrong - while Akko may be an outsider and have a different prospective on "How to get things done" than the mainstream - she ultimately act as a "Conservative force", you know who is even main antagonist of the anime? a Witch that wants to "Modernize" magic, by trying to blend magic and technology together - ultimately causing a mess that goes out of control.
Akko is anything but fighting the change - in fact she ultimately brings magic back to it's former glory, in a word where magic was slowing fading away, she does the opposite than pushing for change; Not even to mention, the only reason why Diana, which is a very "Conservative" witch in a way, it's because she is for some reason not chosen by the "Shiny Rod", a reason that's never clearly explained in the show - Akko just happens to be some sort of "Chosen one" by it - and while we can speculate all day on the reason behind it, it's ultimately a mystery as Akko has nothing special about her aside from her personality, anything that she could accomplish magic-wise could have been done by most other students in the academia.
So I think ultimately any message from the show regarding "Personal Growth" or bringing some sort of "Change" is barred by the "Chosen One" cliché that ultimately nullify most of Akko's credit as not being the result of her own efforts but because she was the one chosen by the rod, and that's such a shame....
actually the "believing in yourself" is a translation error/crappy simplification that is one of many reasons you should watch the pirated version of this show at least once because netflix's translation intentionally dumb's it down in a way that hurts the overall story and it's themes and messes up the climax.
Regardless of the translation (I watched Asenshi by the way!), the show still clearly holds this message. Think about it, the only reason Akko is at Luna Nova in the first place is because she thought she would succeed. Her catchphrase is "A believing heart is your magic" after all! Though that does indeed apply to more than just yourself. Just know that that part of my video isn't based on the mistranslation, rather on my own interpretation.
oh I didn't mean to suggest otherwise. I simply meant that netflix's flub makes that message less clear by oversimplifying it. "A believing heart is your magic" touches on self-confidence but also about believing in others as well as elements of faith. i.e. the reason magic can move a rock, turn you into a fish, or save the world is because people have believe/have-faith that it will. if self-confidence was all it took Croix or Diana would have gotten the staff and found all the words, they clearly are sure of their own abilities. meanwhile Akko has many moments of self doubt, she just usually doesn't show that side of herself to people. it's her belief in magic and her faith in her friends that is unwavering and the reason the staff chose her.
Honestly I'm rambling here, I'm not really making an argument against you or your points, I happen to agree with you and am pretty sure I just told you a bunch of stuff you already know. I was/am more spilling my brain out on the keyboard here, and venting a bit at netflix.

Maybe I'm misunderstanding something, but if someone discovered beyond a doubt that cigarettes cause cancer back in the day and almost all of your fellow doctors just ignore it to maintain the status quo I'd be super paranoid of everyone I work with. The witch teachers in Little Witch Academia take the real concept to an oddly overblown level by being so rigid despite fact after fact slapping them in the face.
I really recommend reading the book I mention, but you could probably find some great articles/videos on the subject. The problem was that it was incredibly hard to prove without a doubt due to the sheer ubiquity as well as (as always) interference from cigarette companies. Scientists would do an experiment, and they would cast doubt by screaming "Those results aren't valid! People aren't mice, and they don't swab tobacco on the skin! Oh, that human study is retrospective, there's no real control group!" etc. etc. There are a lot of examples in history of people kind of taking the status quo for granted.

Real life isn't a cartoon, no, Akko could ever succeed in the real world and get away with it, the real world is filled with boring tasks and is all-round boring in general and you have to accept that it won't and shouldn't cater to the selfish desires of the individual over the group.
This idea of ''progress'' for its own sake is cancerous, the idea of ''tradition bad, progress good'' that the left loves to obsessively spew out uncritically onto the masses so that we don't think about why we had traditions in the first place is garbage and needs to die.
@@pikajew3578 maybe a little late but the radical left-winger analogy would be Croix and not Akko, Akko wasn't necesarily against tradition and even had to learn how to combine it with her ambitions to reach the desired results. Croix represents anti-tradition in as much she was willing to twist the real meaning magic in order to reach a supposed greater good.

I liked Little Witch Academia but I HATED Ako for most of it.
Diana didn't deserve any of the shit Ako threw at her at the beginning. They are treating her like how she was in the OVA even though she is different in the actual show.
Akko isn't ''challenging'' anything, she's just dumb, loud & annoying for no reason whilst refusing to learn the ins and outs of a field of which she apparently desires to be a part of the way everybody else does in order to be good at it in the first place.
