Judging from what I've seen in build videos for paladins in Elden Ring, it seems like it can get pretty powerful really fast. I'm so eager to get started 😁
FYI the shield he's using is only dropped by ONE specific knight in the Haligtree unlike most enemy weapon/shields. Go to the wiki for the item for a detailed description of which knight can drop it and how to reach him.

I’ve been trying a dagger playthrough but it’s definitely not easy with the lack of reach. Find myself whiffing the hitbox even when I’m seemingly in their face
I’ve beaten the game with dagger and buckler and it’s not easy at all but you learn to dodge or parry every enemy and boss, it’s really fun. Especially Radagon , he’s pretty easy to parry so it’s fun to beat him and the beast with a dagger lol
Love a pala build. I would say though that in the early game, the brass shield will be better because although you can get the gilded great shield very early you will neither be able to use it nor carry it for a huge chunk of the game as it’s 36 str requirement and heavy has hell… wielding that shield, a sword and armour requires a hefty carry weight talisman such as the great jars arsenal and endurance north of 30
I find myself in this bind. I am level 71 and thinking I might be able to transition to the greatshield from the brass shield. But figuring out the stat spread is hard tough. I do wish he would have given level range stat guides. Any such advice?
@@collinc113 so these kind of builds struggle a lot juggling the stat spread in the mid game. You need to prioritise vigour and what ever your damage dealing stats are to keep up with enemy difficulty scaling. Endurance typically isn’t a stat you can really pump until later and you will need that for the carry weight, you also need strength 36 for that shield as I recall. There are always around it how ever, what I would suggest is make sure you have you three talisman slots, you can sacrifice two for the Erd Trees Favour talisman and the great jars arsenal. This will boost your carry weight significantly. The third slot you can use Radagon’s Sore seal which will boost vigour, strength, endurance and dexterity by an additional 5 points each. So that adds another 20 levels to your build and then if you run Godrick’s Great Rune on top you gain an additional 5 points to every stat which should enable you to use it, though you’ll have to wear lighter armour for a while. Keep in mind that the sore seal increases the damage you take by something like 12% I think, so you’ll need extra vigour to compensate and I’d advise boosting those stats first over the next 20 levels so you can get rid of it asap. Also remember that if you die you will have to re apply great rune or you’ll be fat rolling.
Seriously appreciate your fast reply! So, if I am understanding you, keep Endurance in the teens, pump vigor to at least 25 (30, even?), crank strength to 36 for the great shield, and then put the rest into Faith. And then until level 100, focus on vigor, endurance, and faith. It I can beat those challengers I can get the great jars talisman which will help for sure. And then I can take on Radigan.
@@collinc113Radagons’s sore seal you pick up from Fort Faroth in Caelid. It’s hard to say without looking at your stat spread as it is right now, but if you are already at lev 71, vigour then getting vigour to 40 by level 100 is a priority because late game enemies hit like a truck. The sore seal and godricks great rune basically will boost your strength, endurance and vigour up by another 10 points on top of what you already have But it’s only a temporary solution to plug the gaps by 100. Between level 100 and 150 you work on plugging those gaps with actual levels so you don’t have to rely on gimmicks to use your gear because by then you will want to be using the talismans that boost your damage. The great jars arsenal you will have to use all the way though I think unless you wear really light armour. Endurance will need to be 20-25 I think till you hit 100 and can spare some points for it. If you have larval tear you can always play around with respec at level 100 and see what you need with the gear you are using and then plan the rest of your build and future stat allocation from there. Faith will definitely need to be upped for obvious reasons but it is worth nothing that you can always use the faith knot crystal tear for to boost faith during boss fights until it is where it needs to be. It’s also worth nothing that in those earlier levels, most of the damage from a weapon art of ashe of war comes from the upgrade level of the weapon rather than the scaling as most have terrible scaling till highly upgraded so if ya faith is a bit behind, it’s only really a problem if you are mostly relying on incantations
Try this: 60 Vig 20 Mind 33 Endurance 30 Strength 20 Dex 50 Faith Get your poise to 102, equip 2 seals and a heavy weapon like Great Stars or Godskin Stitcher and use the Flame Art affinity + Flaming Strike or Black Flame Tornado and/or a hard swappable Sacred affinity + Sacred Blade. I personally run Dragon Cult incantations and all the buffs + Flame and Faith cracked tears. It rips in PvE and is incredibly effective in PvP due to the ability to trade + then capitalise on your opponent subsequently rolls by using Flaming Strike.
@@avelon41 depends on what kind of PvP. For colosseum you can go anywhere from 90 all the way to 155 and still get matched pretty quickly. Just bear in mind that the higher you go, the more likely you are to match with hybrid builds. Pretty much any level is viable for invasions but the most fun is in the lower levels like 30-90. I stick to 139 so I can match/invade lvl 125 up to 150
It really is a paladin build! it takes half an hour to buff before its truly ready! Personally id get rid of the extra dexterity and go full strength, the scorpion or sword talisman and replace it with Old Lords Talisman, since the entire build revolves around about 5 different buffs, youll want to keep them up as long as possible, especially for endurance fights where you wont have much time to buff, and you can also make use of Carian Filigree Talisman since this is a skill-heavy playstyle. I literally made this type build with this weapon and shield setup for a strength/faith setup just last week, but i dual wield with Golden Epitaph when speedrunning the undead enemies, and for anything highly resistant to holy damage i throw on the Battle Hammer, Heavy infused with either Gravitas or Golden Land, and Cranial Vessel for situational fire damage bonking time. I tend to gravitate towards charged attacks and charged spells and dodge everything, so a shield playstyle is really outside my comfort zone.
my first run through of elden ring i stuck solely to sword and shield, had barricade shield on a great shield and just stacked poise and armor, this looks like it could be a fun twist on that mixing in some buffs
I never tried this build but I'd love to see a fire version of it because the hardest bosses in the game are extremely strong against holy damage so it would be really nice to have an alternative version for this build
Just put a different AoW in another weapon, like Lordsworn’s Straight Sword or Broadsword, and infuse it with Flame Art. Sword Dance is always a good choice, hits like a truck
This looks good. Not the biggest fan of holy damage, but it is still viable. Can you make a flame paladin sometime. I’d like to see how it does. Thank you for the great build.
@@lastxpI think that a big meaty shield should be accompanied with a big meaty weapon. Im going to make great mace, greatshield block counter paladin.
A good goal and replacement for Barricade Shield's nerf is using Shield Grease. It gives resistances and extra stability, and you keep your No Skill Type, everything is also easy to farm but it'll take some major doing before than as you gotta get to Nokron for the Silver Tear mats. Great video and fun build ^~^
I probably already said this, but I really love this build. It is my home base, and I love it. Everything about it (I tried using the Haligtree Knight Helm, and the Frogmouth design--narrow skull squishing--just didn't do it for me. The Greathelm, though, as you recommended, looks great (and suffers only 2 faith, which I don't mind.)
I’ve been dying for a sturdy knight/holy knight build like this, but I have a few questions: 1. The stat spread is huge. What should a NG prioritize first after Vigor and Endurance? Faith for the Sacred Blade? Strength and and Dex alternatively? 2. Even in your straight sword vid you said the viability of Miquellan Knight’s Sword was limited, how far will with this and SB really take you? 3. What about the Golden Order Greatsword - supposedly the “best” holy weapon. Viable at all in a holy knight? 4. Have you killed Elden Beast with this build? Thank you! Please keep the builds coming, eagerly check every day for some new variant to keep the game fresh.
I can really understand your love for the paladin but, while I go for the Carian Knight style build as my fave I do love the paladin version too. From a common sense point of view, heavy armour, great shield, healing magic and a good sword makes a lot of sense. hmm long as you don't mind another great shield build I'd love to see a Hoplite themed spear and shield build, a little like your lightning lancer build but no holy element or miracles would be cool, I'm tempted to say Partizan with the spirit lance art of war.
Honestly throw some Perfume up in the air and get that miracle orb of Indomitable Will shielding our holy man from the first strikes of evil and I think this just becomes that much better. Summon Lhutel and that's a look I'd love to see on the big screen any day against dragons, you name it. Awesome build man! I loved this
Wow this is almost identical to my pally build! I did use the same sword even until NG+ at that point I'm now using Marika's Hammer and let me tell you nothing stands a chance against that ash of war. Just melts everything!
Hey there @fextralife. Thank you for this plethora of guides and different builds. I am a new player to ER and these really help a bunch. However, when you explain in the guides why you use what you use (ex. talismans, different weapon combinations and so on) it all makes perfect sense. Then I go ahead and try to put together my own build and then I figure out I have no idea what scales with what when and what I should combine with what for the maximum effect. If this was difficult to read then just think how it must feel. lol Please (!!) would you please make a video explaining this jargon so that we (read: "I") can make our own builds and actually know what we're doing. Please... :)
I'm transitioning into a paladin knight Vanguard build. Having fun with a claymore for early game damage before I transition into great shield and straight sword. bought a few low cost faith spells like cure poison, fire ball, holy enchant sword for later. I like it.
thank you so much for all the work you put into these videos! I've learned so much from them and they have really helped me get better at this game that I love but I totally suck at
Sacred blade is awesome. As a 150 strength build with only 25 faith, it can oneshot(or almost one shot) most of the death birds when I connected both the blade and projectile to the head. With the LAST RITES buff on from the golden epitaph of course
Something fun about this is that its easy to customize. for example use the dragon seal and focus more on arcane than faith. use a bloody slash and boom blood paladin
This is likely the best build for an early/mid game on a beginner's first run. Sacred Blade practically solves all the problems you may have, with the added benefit of OHKOing undeads and destroying death birds within 3 casts. If put on a thrusting sword, you can even poke/finish behind a shield. Also, Sacred Blade's projectile does a lot of stance damage, breaking enemies poise. Now, the only weakness, and a big one, is that once you get to the Haligtree, it will be practically impossible to overcome it with this build. The holy damage resistance there is off the charts, and some of the hardest bosses like Malenia, Radagon and Elden Beast will make your life miserable when using this. There are some workarounds (like debuffs and such) but not worth it. So, what I did was actually using a dex based weapon (Estoc) and when needed, I changed my AOW to Thunderbolt on Keen. With that, I could beat holy resistant bosses while mantaining a similar playstyle. Obviously, because you do not have any strength, you lose the greatshield, but that is worth the tradeoff. I believe it is possible to make a quality build by lowering faith and granting a greatshield, but I did no try it. My first run of the game was as this.
I figure that since faith is versatile, you can switch to a fire or lightning based setup in the late game. But I heard a rumor that the undead play a big part in the DLC so I have high hopes that our paladin will shine in the future!
Important to note for gearing this build- The Haligtree Crest Great-shield doesnt drop from all enemies that carry it at Miquella’s. To farm one- the knight hugging the right wall of the outside structure when you take the elevator up from the Melania fight will drop it. Its a low drop rate so respec into arcane before farming.
Feel like you missed a trick here, the mace with prayerful strike is a much better paladin weapon, offers healing for yourself and allies. Run it with heavy affinity and use weapon buffs to add holy/lightning DMG.
Absolutely dope! This is such a fuckin' good Paladin build! It's beyond fun to play movement and combat wise, and is every bit as versatile as a Paladin should be. I am so very impressed with this!
On my 1st playthrough I farmed for the Haligtree for hours. Was wearing the mimic helmet and eating chicken foots like crazy. Also upgraded my arcane a few times just to get more discovery.
Cool build as always. Miquella’s Sword is like 1b to SONAF’s 1a in terms of design as well. Total drip. Only thing is you would have to incorporate some type of lightning or incant to deal with Malenia, Radagon, Elden Beast, etc. unless the physical damage is good enough to deal with the holy resistance?
not entirely what i expected, but still liked it, so i can just use this as a springboard for the build i'm going for. it goes further into a support rather than damage and defense. like more heals and increasing resistances, even though most erdtree incantations are situational that's specifically what im going for.
I run a slightly lower level version of this build, it's been my absolute favorite for a while now. I cannot recommend enough to carry a backup FIRE weapon with you if you do a lot of coop, otherwise prepare to feel useless for a good chunk of bosses.
i was thinking i want to replay Elden Ring... reach a different ending... and prepare for DLC hoping that since "Shadow" of the erdtree will make Holy dmg relevant, decided to go to a Holy Knight type of thing... smiting creatures of darkness and shit. i was looking through the Armor Sets, weapons and Shields and SOMEHOW! after i decided to got for the Halgtree Set and Shield pure for the Design with the unmached drip of the classic Bucket Helmet and a Sacred Blade as my main tool of holyness somehow this video pops up in my suggestions i think it's fate! the fashion is just chef's kiss
Hey, love your builds! I had a build request for you. With the new buffs to daggers, I thought a fire and ice dagger build would be powerful. The fire resetting the ice for repeated procs could be strong. Thanks!
I finally beat the game with my bare bones dual-katana build (basically "Let Me Solo Her"), and I always wanted to try a faith build. I think I'll have to give this a go 🔥🔥
Awesome build! Elden Ring’s my 1st Souls-like by FromSoftware, LoL. Really enjoying playing as a Pally. I should activate Godrick’s great run @ the divine tower. If you’ve got a vid on that, I’ll watch it next ☮️

Judging from what I've seen in build videos for paladins in Elden Ring, it seems like it can get pretty powerful really fast. I'm so eager to get started 😁
@@CelticDad2022 alright sweet thanks man
@@CelticDad2022they ate resistant to Holy but you can swap for fire or bolt damage as it also increases by faith
FYI the shield he's using is only dropped by ONE specific knight in the Haligtree unlike most enemy weapon/shields. Go to the wiki for the item for a detailed description of which knight can drop it and how to reach him.
Almost done with my base game playthrough and loving this build. Some kind of follow-up build for SotE would be amazing! 🙏
agreed that would be awesome
Dagger video would be timely given their buffs in 1.08. It would be interesting to know if they can be used in a viable build. Thank you for all your content. I really enjoy them.
I agree.
Love the way this looks can't wait to try it out. I would love to see a build revolving around the Ruins Greatsword
Yay! A new video, this build was made for me, I have always wanted an upgrade from the prior versions.
Thanks, these videos make me so happy.
I appreciate the discussion about where to get the items early on and how to work up to the new game plus build.
Bro thank you so much ong I haven’t been able to find a good build in like a month or 2
Is it good??
@ it’s pretty good ?
cool build! i am loving using the erdtree greatshield with fundamentalist spells and parrying rings of light back at enemies. its so good.
Try this:
60 Vig
20 Mind
33 Endurance
30 Strength
20 Dex
50 Faith
Get your poise to 102, equip 2 seals and a heavy weapon like Great Stars or Godskin Stitcher and use the Flame Art affinity + Flaming Strike or Black Flame Tornado and/or a hard swappable Sacred affinity + Sacred Blade. I personally run Dragon Cult incantations and all the buffs + Flame and Faith cracked tears. It rips in PvE and is incredibly effective in PvP due to the ability to trade + then capitalise on your opponent subsequently rolls by using Flaming Strike.
What is the max lvl you recomend for pvp?
@@avelon41 depends on what kind of PvP. For colosseum you can go anywhere from 90 all the way to 155 and still get matched pretty quickly. Just bear in mind that the higher you go, the more likely you are to match with hybrid builds. Pretty much any level is viable for invasions but the most fun is in the lower levels like 30-90. I stick to 139 so I can match/invade lvl 125 up to 150
10,000% the video i was hoping for. Looking forward to the spear video - i would like my Paladin to have one!
I’d recommend Inseparable Sword if you are using Sacred Blade. Looks really good and fits a Paladin theme imo.
Its actually stronger and better scaling just got it cool sword
I tend to gravitate towards charged attacks and charged spells and dodge everything, so a shield playstyle is really outside my comfort zone.
my first run through of elden ring i stuck solely to sword and shield, had barricade shield on a great shield and just stacked poise and armor, this looks like it could be a fun twist on that mixing in some buffs
waited too long for this! VERY NICE
I never tried this build but I'd love to see a fire version of it because the hardest bosses in the game are extremely strong against holy damage so it would be really nice to have an alternative version for this build
You can just put a different type of dmg on the blade than holy
Just put a different AoW in another weapon, like Lordsworn’s Straight Sword or Broadsword, and infuse it with Flame Art. Sword Dance is always a good choice, hits like a truck
This looks good. Not the biggest fan of holy damage, but it is still viable. Can you make a flame paladin sometime. I’d like to see how it does. Thank you for the great build.
Night and flame sword with tombstone shield etc would be cool
@@lastxpI think that a big meaty shield should be accompanied with a big meaty weapon. Im going to make great mace, greatshield block counter paladin.
A good goal and replacement for Barricade Shield's nerf is using Shield Grease. It gives resistances and extra stability, and you keep your No Skill Type, everything is also easy to farm but it'll take some major doing before than as you gotta get to Nokron for the Silver Tear mats. Great video and fun build ^~^
You can also add a little intelligence you only need 12 for scholars shield spell
Can’t wait for more of these all game builds
I probably already said this, but I really love this build. It is my home base, and I love it. Everything about it (I tried using the Haligtree Knight Helm, and the Frogmouth design--narrow skull squishing--just didn't do it for me. The Greathelm, though, as you recommended, looks great (and suffers only 2 faith, which I don't mind.)
This is a perfectly themed build for a Follower of Miquella to take into the Shadow of the Erd Tree
I missed out didn't know such healing existed but I've now fallen in love with paladins and self heals
I've been pounding build since Dark Souls 1 because the cleric with the key gets the store straight sword really quickly and it's super op early game
I’ve been dying for a sturdy knight/holy knight build like this, but I have a few questions:
Also counterpoint: Sacred Iron Greatsword instead
Higher AR, still has a *bit of a pull forward R2, and scales better in almost all 3 stats
Pally is always a first option in my mind. Great video!
Would love to see a build with the Guardian's Swordspear next
I think he did one a long time ago. It was very fun/good, focusing on Dex + Electrify Armament. Give it a look. 👍
He did one with it for a Loretta build,
i really appreciate the tips for the early game. would like it if you could do that for more builds :)
Do not sleep on the turtle talisman. Its not a big damage talisman but it allows you to keep cranking out the damage without much of a pause
My favorite talisman.
Perfect timing, I was literally just deciding how to build my faith build.
If this was difficult to read then just think how it must feel. lol
Please (!!) would you please make a video explaining this jargon so that we (read: "I") can make our own builds and actually know what we're doing. Please... :)
I'm transitioning into a paladin knight Vanguard build. Having fun with a claymore for early game damage before I transition into great shield and straight sword. bought a few low cost faith spells like cure poison, fire ball, holy enchant sword for later. I like it.
thanks man! i love a good heavy build
Love the build and the way you're simultaneously updating your previous build videos. Good stuff!
Love all your elden ring vids. I know there’s not many, but I’d love to see a flail weapons video or great spears
thank you so much for all the work you put into these videos! I've learned so much from them and they have really helped me get better at this game that I love but I totally suck at
I'm trying this build! Thnks dude!
thanks for the build!
Fextralife, I really appreciate that you don't troll us with titles like "oP" "bRoKeN"
Sacred blade is awesome. As a 150 strength build with only 25 faith, it can oneshot(or almost one shot) most of the death birds when I connected both the blade and projectile to the head. With the LAST RITES buff on from the golden epitaph of course
Just built this. Love the look. It’s not bad in pvp either
Something fun about this is that its easy to customize. for example use the dragon seal and focus more on arcane than faith. use a bloody slash and boom blood paladin
I love this build I pretty much do the same thing I just used a golden order greatsword as well because it's ash of war it's just way too cool
Spears weapon review is indeed good idea, waiting for it
This is likely the best build for an early/mid game on a beginner's first run.
I'll always prefer to play as a Paladin in any kind of fantasy rpg I'm definitely gonna do this build 😁👍
Thank you we need more great sword builds and shields maybe some arcane too
Important to note for gearing this build- The Haligtree Crest Great-shield doesnt drop from all enemies that carry it at Miquella’s.
Going to do this but thinking about using a Claymore instead....thoughts?
1b to SONAF’s 1a ? What;s that mean? It's a great looking blade.
not entirely what i expected, but still liked it, so i can just use this as a springboard for the build i'm going for. it goes further into a support rather than damage and defense. like more heals and increasing resistances, even though most erdtree incantations are situational that's specifically what im going for.
I'd like to see a build revolving around either beast claw greathammer or a gravity build around ruins greatsword
I've honestly never seen that shield. I'm not a shield bro, but that think looks amazing. Fashion a+++
I run a slightly lower level version of this build, it's been my absolute favorite for a while now. I cannot recommend enough to carry a backup FIRE weapon with you if you do a lot of coop, otherwise prepare to feel useless for a good chunk of bosses.
i was thinking i want to replay Elden Ring... reach a different ending... and prepare for DLC hoping that since "Shadow" of the erdtree will make Holy dmg relevant, decided to go to a Holy Knight type of thing... smiting creatures of darkness and shit.
i was looking through the Armor Sets, weapons and Shields
and SOMEHOW! after i decided to got for the Halgtree Set and Shield pure for the Design with the unmached drip of the classic Bucket Helmet
and a Sacred Blade as my main tool of holyness
somehow this video pops up in my suggestions
i think it's fate!
the fashion is just chef's kiss
Very nice, I will try it
Hey, love your builds!
I think I'll have to give this a go 🔥🔥
Spears ! Yes please ! Im waiting for that a long time
Awesome build! Elden Ring’s my 1st Souls-like by FromSoftware, LoL. Really enjoying playing as a Pally. I should activate Godrick’s great run @ the divine tower. If you’ve got a vid on that, I’ll watch it next ☮️
