    Mahdad for me had the most compelling argument. A big step is just looking at ways to stop wastage of energy. Even if the solution need to look at a combined solution that splits the propulsion from the hotel load.

    I get having a parallel hybrid system on a leisure yacht and even a military vessel so you can be silent and not leave residues for short periods of time. But merchant vessels? Every time you convert energy you incur losses. That is exactly what shipping lines want to eliminate.

      Exactly. You always have to look at the energy loss (and emissions) between the energy source and the final user to accurately gauge real costs and impacts. That would include the costs of planting a wind turbine offshore to create electricity used to help process an energy product that will end up being expended offshore.

    1- For my sailing yacht, I want autonomy---the sails plus onboard generation of hydrogen or ammonia for autonomy.
    Ammonia is less volatile than hydrogen, so an ammonia internal combustion engine or fuel cell. And electric power generated under sail, wind, or Sun to produce hydrogen/ ammonia.
    I don't like Lithium batteries.
    On a sailing yacht, I only need power to propel through the doldrums
    2- For my motor yacht, I want economy for a yacht large enough to carry a twin-turbine helicopter and a small submarine, so nuclear power.
    3- Ammonia/hydrogen, sails, and renewable electric power aren't as practical as nuclear power for large yachts, whereas nuclear isn't practical for small yachts.

    The most effective and efficient propulsion fuel in the Marine industry is diesel. They can not extinguish an EV car battery fire on land I don’t think that I would like to be in the middle of the Atlantic with a battery fire! And as you pointed out hydrogen has is its risks as well.

      Agreed. There is no reason to share your living spaces with elements that can kill you or sink your vessel.

      Direct wind and solar are more efficient. “Effective” is true only if you neglect the echological damage and don’t require puting the world back the way you found it.
