I appreciate you showing the harsh realities of ranching. Below freezing temperatures, working in winds that take your breath away and calves born in the wrong season that don’t make it, take the romance out of ranching. It’s good to recall that ranching is a 24 hour, 365 days a year business first and foremost, that involves risks, hard work and small profit margins.

Trinity, my wife is from the Philippines and into fashion/modeling and cooking. After I introduced her to your channel she really has a appreciation for the hard work and the real life reality that a Montana rancher has to endure to bring food to our table. In our home our Steaks are called “Trinity steaks” in honor of all your hard work and dedication to teaching everyone what it takes to be a Montana Rancher/cowboy. My wife never seen snow until living in the U.S is cold just by watching this video! God Bless.

They make a tube feeder that we use for weak calves. You slide the tube down their throat and basically pour the milk down their throat. It works good to get milk and electrolytes in them quickly.

I'm not a rancher, but had a few horses in my younger days. The closest I came to a cold winter was back in '69. It was 0 degrees and before & after school & before going to bed, I had to break the ice off the water trough and remove the icicles off the horses.
Also, it was the first time girls were allowed to wear pants to school. Imagine waiting at your bus stop wearing a dress!

Seeing your cattle outside in winter reminds me of the time 5 years ago when I drove across Montana from south to north (I live in Alberta) and saw cattle out in the valleys next to rivers and I saw mist rising off the rivers and wondered if there was a volcanic stream, but it was ice mist because that day it was minus 34° C! (-29 F). Point being that cattle were still out there along with horses in that terrific cold just grazing through the snow for grass, so they can stand it if they're well fed and watered (antifreeze for blood I guess)...
That little calf probably would have survived had it found its mother with milk but newborn calves (an inusual thing in the winter) have it tough.
    Thank you. Stay safe.

I milk cows on a 400 cow dairy here in Michigan. Cold weather is tough business. We don't get as bad as you guys by any means but it's not usual to have stretches of 0° weather. That will add a lot of time to the daily chores. Water hoses freeze, diesel engines don't want to start, manure equipment is frozen and as you imagine there is a lot of manure to get rid of everyday. The worst thing for dairy cows in this cold weather is the wind. Beef cows seem to be a bit more hardy. My horses fair pretty good in really cold weather especially my Morgan.

What you have accomplished is to pretty much portray what the “average” day for a ranching family is like. Many tough professions in this world and ranching is one of them. But take heart, when you are having a bad day, just remember back when square bales were the technology, everything was horseback, or when tractors had no cabs or worse, hitching a team for hauling loose hay. I’ve not seen a channel that better depicts when ranching gets “western.” Of course the good facets outweigh the bad or you wouldn’t do it. Those might make a good video as well. Your video does portray the American Dream …which is not an outcome, but an opportunity to have a fulfilling livelihood and make a living. Great channel.

But the fun thing is that the only dog in this video is the perfect copy of our family dog which died aged 13 couple of years ago. So I would love to know if there is considered a breed, and if so, if it is peculiar of Montana. Here they call it Australian Shepard.

When i had calves in that situation, i found it easier to tube the milk into them for the first one or two feeds before trying them on the bottle. but certainly if the cold is right through them they can be very hard to bring back.

I grew up working on a ranch out in Stanford. Hated calving season for multiple reasons but least favorite helping deliver. Let me know if you'd ever consider a hired hand. I miss it

As I watched you race around in the truck trying to turn those cows I thought how wonderful it would be to have a dog , like sheep herders, to help gather them up. Later in the video I saw your dog in the barn looked like a shepherd dog is he and do you use him for that?

Sorry about the little calf dying. The reality of ranching was shown to your audience. I can see that you treat your animals very well.
