Rick my dad gave me a inop Silvertone 100.195 chassis #. radio 40 years ago. I recently just finished all the electrical repairs and it now works perfectly. I'm a little slower with my repairs than you are!! It had a bad winding on the oscillator coil. I was lucky in that I only had to unwind one turn to find the open. I wish I had known this trick with the transistor radio to determine oscillator function. Thanks for this series on these repairs. They are very helpful.

I like the way how you show the schematic diagram in conjunction with the radio and the corresponding components you are describing and testing. I have learnt a lot how to find out if the local oscillator works and how to test with a simple portable radio as a "help" to find it. Thank you very much for this wonderful tutorial and practical lesson.

Great work. You are an inspiration to us all. Thanks for your hard work in not only repair the radio, but in videoing the process. Ron in Putnam, Tx

You didn't know you are giving me not only a radio but test equipment also. I think the weather will be much nicer tomorrow so I think I'll go down to the flea market.

I have an isolation transformer. On the isolated side of the transformer I have a VARIAC. I have used light bulbs before and they were quite well. But today I always use an isolation transformer and a VARIAC.

Interesting vid...I've been restoring radios for a long time, and I've never had an open resistor that didn't look damaged. I guess it just goes to show that anything is possible! This video also points out something else useful; for basic radio troubleshooting, no fancy test equipment is necessary, just a simple multimeter works fine.

Yes Daniel, from the bottom view the pins count clockwise. I do have the bottom view of several tube types in my e-book, in the appendix. This is a free e-book and you can find a link on my RUclips channel. I like your workbench by the way, very nice set up.

I first noticed what you just demonstrated years ago. One of the radios was connected to the TV cable because they carried FM radio in the area at that time. It was about the only way to get excellent FM reception in the area.

    Hello,
Thank you for this very instructive video.
I've got a question. Did you power the radio up directly to the net or through a series lamp?
    Regards,
    Jan (The Netherlands)

Hi allamericanradio5 I have been a subscriber of yours for a while now and finally got around to uploading a video of something I inherited from my grandad of which he used to listen to India on , if you could tell me more about that would be amazing , I have no idea what kind of antenna I would need to get it working , also not sure if it runs on 240v or lower. Keep up the great work ! Thanks

The best that I can tell, is that it looks military, and from the label looks like it was a tube set. From the video it looks like it still has one tube and it has been transistorized. That's about all that I can say about it without drawing up the wiring diagram. And since it is a custom modification to learn more about this unit you would need to draw up the wiring diagram.

small transistor radios are also a good way to test car remotes...held close to the antenna they. make static if emitting something.
