November 2023 and I just watched Dusty Springfield in concert at the Royal Albert Hall in 1976 and it brought tears to my eyes knowing this lovely lady is no longer with us, she was undoubtedly the finest female singer ever from the UK. Her rendition's of Burt Bacharach and Carole King's songs we're beautifully sung RIP Dusty ❤❤❤❤
IMHO, Dusty was the finest white soul girl ever. When she was allowed to record gems like this, and not some of the pop hits she herself despised, she had a rare quality. "Dusty In Memphis" was a towering achievement, but didn't even make the UK abum charts. RIP Dusty .... your voice was a treasure that we can all still share, thankfully.
My favorite Dusty's song. She was a great human being. She embraced Motown sound and was instrumental to bring the Motown acts to television screens in Great Britain.
Dusty was a perfectionist and I thought I remember reading that this is the only track where she found no fault. Carole King has said that this is her favorite cover of ANY of her songs.
I didn't realize that Carole King wrote that song but what else is new Carole King writing another good song another great song what else is new Dusty Springfield singing another great song what else is new
It's a common question "what's your favourite record?" And whenever I answer, I usually say something that's been going through my head at the time - might be something by Joni Mitchell, Neil Young, Bob Dylan, Four Tops, Temptations - the list goes on. Then I'll hear this out of the blue and it just surpasses everything else - the perfect song by the perfect singer. I love it.
This song is really special to me. Ive heard some people complain about the lyrics, sayn things like "this girl has no self-esteem, no self respect, begging for bits and pieces of affection instead of lookin for a real, commited relationship". I guess I can see where they are coming from. It can be read that way. But I dont see it that way, I dont see it as self-depreciative at all. For me, this song is about real, hardcore, selfless love. The one worth having and living.
From several interview clips I've seen, it seems like a lot of folks gave Dusty a hard time for the "Panda Eyed" look. I think she said she had picked it up from French models in fashion magazines back in the day. Personally, I think she's just gorgeous and the eyes became sort of her trademark. Anyway, it works for me...she looks and sounds divine here. Thanks for the clip.
How could this not have been a #1 hit in America? I'm a HUGE fan and have 18 American and English vinyl lps of hers recorded from the Springfields to the mid-80's. but this wasn't included on a single one of them! I first heard it on that fantastic DVD compilation of a few years ago and was bowled over at hearing such a great song for the first time. Thankfully I was able to track down an English 45 for they typical price of taking the in-laws out to a fancy restaurant. Heck, I'd pay that amount over again to find a 45 of her doing "How Can I Be Sure," which HAS to be out there somewhere? Whenever I watch this, I can't help but cry for some reason. Thanks for all those hours of listening to all your songs over the years Mary.
Still brings back the very smells of the first day in which I heard it. No, no drugs, alcohol or sex entered into the picture. It has the ability to alter your conscience and your emotional state like few songs can. Amazing to say the least
I have been searching for this song ever since I heard it in an Oprah Winfrey TV movie called "Before Women had Wings". Man this is beautiful; and so is Dusty! RIP Dusty and thank you for your great music.
@tightfistedtitans The lyrics aren't outdated. The words still depict ways of thinking people have today, but they do make for one haunting and beautiful song.
@BlackMonk66 We both agree she was a brilliant artist, we just differ slightly about the how and when and why. Let's just revel in the beauty of her voice and her life - is it really worth splitting hairs over, or should we just accept each other's perspective? Whatever our respective opinions on degrees of detail, we both rate her really highly, so shouldn't that be enough? :-)
Just want to say to future generations watching this, when youtube is a visual audio wraperound experiance, this how we loved Dusty's voice vibrating the air about our ears, and we were enriched by the experiance.
@SouthCoastMackem She said a lot of things in interviews that I think were just standard "my new material is the best I've ever done" comments. Her 60s material was a lot more wide-ranging and "earthier" than her post-72 albums. "All Cried Out," "Goin Back," "Look Of Love," "You Don't Have To Say You Love Me," that's a lot of ground right there and she spoke highly of all of them. Besides, she was pretty much in control of her 60s sessions. It was after DIM that she let other people take charge.
At 67 now I was far too young to appreciate Dusty in her hey day, only remembering her from her collaboration with the Pet Shop Boys in the 80’s, which was good too. What a great song.
@ivillek For me it says, "I really like you, stay with me a bit, but you are free, go and have fun, and come back to me once in a while!" It shows real respect. It aknowledges the lover as a person and not a thing to be shown or ketp secret. True love!
@SouthCoastMackem Oh, I'm not arguing. I just like talking about this stuff. Dusty had a different perspective from either of us. She was the only person in the world who didn't think DIM was a great album. That's the thing about Dusty fans. Everything she did is someone's favorite.
@SouthCoastMackem Her real achievement was in those pop hits. She's always qualified as the finest "white soul girl" (unnecessarily, I think, she could stand with anyone), as though people like Aretha were in another category, but when it comes to sixties big ballads like "You Don't Have To Say You Love Me" or "I Close My Eyes and Count To Ten," she OWNED the genre.
I can almost hear the songwriter, Carole King, singing this herself. Great song. I wonder if Carole King's recorded it herself? It's impossible to record anything Dusty Springfield release because, once Dusty nailed it, the song was her's. I think Elvis was probably the only singer capable of covering Dusty successfully.
@ivillek Cont. I think that's why people like her so much. Everyone wants to be completely swept up in by love or to have someone love them that much. In real life, that'll end up meaning that either you are a stalker or you have one, but Dusty lets you experience those emotions vicariously.
@BlackMonk66 There is no doubt whatsoever that Dusty was a great songstress in whatever genre she sang, but she herself in later life railed against the straitjacket she felt she was placed in by management and record company alike during he heyday in the 60s. No disrespect to any of the pop hits she had, but Dusty herself never felt completely at ease doing them - her musical inclinations were much earthier.
@ivillek I love Dusty, but her musical persona was something of a doormat. I once read a good description of "You Don't Have To Say You Love Me" as "she's throwing herself in front of his car for just a few more days. Then there's Breakfast in Bed;she knows the quy will go back to his girlfriend, but she's still begging him to stay for a little while, and so on. That's why Dusty is so compelling, she's so much in love that's she's willing to make choices she knows will turn out badly.
@shrewsoul Unless there's a dramatic change within the way the Music Industry is ran in the UK, she will never be bettered, no-one these days has the soul or character Dusty had. Even if they did, they wouldn't get anywhere, people these days want X-Factor "perfect voice" personas, that is all, they have no appreciation for the finer arts and performers.

dusty melted my heart in the 60s and helped me through life....I miss her so much
I can listen to this song all day without pause! Dusty is still the BEST!
The sound of my Youth! We are only young once. Thank you for the share.
Dusty was a perfectionist and I thought I remember reading that this is the only track where she found no fault. Carole King has said that this is her favorite cover of ANY of her songs.

The Greatest Female singer ever, I doubt there will ever be anyone to match her.
R.I.P Dusty, love & miss yer lass.

This is the most soulful song ever! Carol KIng you are a songwriter par excellence, Dusty you are simply the best ever!!
My all time favourite Dusty Springfield song. Absolute perfection ❤
Without a doubt her best song. 1965 I was 18. Goffin & King at their best!
Very much loved and missed. RIP angel.

I LOVE both this singer and song!
extraordinary video of dusty.

@Mycroftsbrother Beautiful eyes, Irish O'brien Eyes. Lady Diana had O'brien ancestry-and a similar Panda Eyed look.
Why can't songs sound like this anymore?! This is just a beautiful song and Dusty adds her beautiful touch to it. (Sigh)
Why wasn't this a huge hit? It's perfect.
This Song is fantastic and epitomises what the Great Dusty Springfield was all about
Amazing Lady

Paul Maney she didn't get a single number 1 in America . They clearly don't know best music . Son of a preacher came number 2
Yes she said in an interview this was her personal favorite.......glad to be born in 50ty.
Still brings back the very smells of the first day in which I heard it. No, no drugs, alcohol or sex entered into the picture. It has the ability to alter your conscience and your emotional state like few songs can. Amazing to say the least
This song gets stuck in your song! Such a great sound :)
Dusty is so gorgeous at 1:23
@Rotateitbaby Absolutely spot on !, Dusty was the best in my opinion, she had such soul.
I have been searching for this song ever since I heard it in an Oprah Winfrey TV movie called "Before Women had Wings". Man this is beautiful; and so is Dusty! RIP Dusty and thank you for your great music.
Putting the modern "RnB" singer to shame! Deeply moving, yet direct and honest, beatiful stuff.
when you watch this video you can really see in Dusty's eyes and expression how much she really loved the song she was singing.
OMG is this beautiful
One of my favorite Dusty songs. Absolutely fab!

@tightfistedtitans The lyrics aren't outdated. The words still depict ways of thinking people have today, but they do make for one haunting and beautiful song.

Beautiful tune 🙏
Yes indeed, A great team together.
Dusty was the best singer on either side of the atlantic.
Marilyn McCoo is tops for me.
Stunning Song!
@BlackMonk66 Agreed! No such nonsense as "white" soul...soul is soul, and did she ever have SOUL!!! Fabulous!
She was certainly in a class of her own,Great Voice.Great Looks, that voice is out of this world,All Class Dusty taken far to early.
At 67 now I was far too young to appreciate Dusty in her hey day, only remembering her from her collaboration with the Pet Shop Boys in the 80’s, which was good too.
What a great song.

One of my top 5 Dusty songs, written by Carol King
Absolute class 👌
This was on my heart today
A great great track seriously
Love this ❤️
love this song

Spot-on production

Roy Martin yes!
Carole King recorded this in 1966. Should be on Tube somewhere.
I don't recall ever hearing this song until just recently after buying Dusty's greatest hits.
Even Elvis admired her voice 💕
The earlier vision by the Honey Bees is quite good as well, So far can't find it on YT

She was my husbands favourite singer, I play the c d every day

@johnslullaby Phil version is really good...well the whole album is amazing!!!
@BlackMonk66 Interesting way too look at it. :D

What a sexy song. Gorgeous
She sounds good. I thought she was black. She has a soulful voice. Beautiful song.
Actuall musice by King and lyrics by Gerry Goffin
ANYONE WHO CAN'T GET THIS.....HAS A HOLE IN THEIR CHEST! STUNNING!
Another Goffin and King gem from the 1950s
@ivillek I love Dusty, but her musical persona was something of a doormat. I just heard Kiki Dee say she sang backing vocals on this at the age of 16/17!

A pity this wasn't in colour - it would have been very cosmic.
Mum rip
Gerry Goffin was 20 when he wrote these words. Fuck me that man was great, Up on the Roof was another
fuckin great
dont forget carole`s lyric writer gerry goffin!
