    In Canada last year he somehow had a very poor exit from the chicane. The cars in front of him were almost glued together, yet he was unable to follow them closely and therefore he didn't get a slipstream to defend himself from Leclerc.
    Austria 2021 was a weird race indeed. Norris was happily sitting in 3rd place, when all of the sudden he let Pérez and Bottas by. He must have regretted this, because he could keep up with them quite well later in the race, so he could have finished ahead of them. A week later, at the same track, he actually did put up a fight.

    • @yannickvaz694
      @yannickvaz694 2 месяца назад +2

      Both instances were towards the start of the race. If he defends against a *clearly* faster car, he'll ruin his tyres for his own race against his actual rivals. Either he won't have the tyres to attack/defend when he needs to, or he'll be forced to pit too early. There's also the risk of damaging the car from an incident.
      Piastri suffers from this at the moment. It's fun to see him getting aggressive, but he chews his tyres too early. He also takes a lot of risks dropping out of points, fighting too hard (Monza 2023, Spa 2023, and Miami 2024 are examples, irrespective of who's at fault).

    Random anecdote but it actually feels like they programmed this behavior for Norris in F1 Manager 23. I just hired him to Alfa Romeo for 2026 and on race 1 of the season I noticed him willingly giving up several places early in the race when he clearly didn't have the pace to keep up, yet it resulted in him having a tire advantage and finishing P5 overall from a P4 start. He's ranked 92 OVR now and has 97/100 for attack and defense when in peak form so it had nothing to do with poor defensive driving. I'm pretty sure this was just coincidental but interesting nonetheless.

      I mean I‘m looking forward to the possibility of someone actually challenging Verstappen on track for the first time in two years and if Norris is up to that challenge but what you said is ridiculous
      You can call it „not even racing“ if you want because that’s the point of why it‘s so smart to lose minimal time to cars you don’t have a chance of fighting with anyway
      When there‘s a chance to beat a car he‘s fighting, of course he races against them, when there’s no chance of beating a car, why lose time and tire life to maybe keep ahead for two more laps and let the cars you are actually racing against catch up?

      @@cyancut21 at least put up a fight it's racing, conditions change all the time, even impacting the time of a faster driver by a few tenths can flip an entire race on it's head and open up strategy options, that's why lando can't take advantage of the rare moments when an opportunity opens up cus he's always racing passively.
      There was a race where he let a faster car go by, a few laps later the driver totally lost pace while somehow the conditions favoured the McLaren, he could drive closer but could never overtake because he had earlier thought he was being smart by letting the faster car by and that came back to bite him in the arse, can't remember the race right now though.
      At least make them fight for it, you don't have to burn out your tires, at least take a defensive line instead of rolling out the red carpet, that will not even cost a tenth, make us believe we're actually watching a race.

      @@chiefdenis In that instance, you‘re absolutely right. But since you can’t predict when a situation like that will arise, taking that 1/100 loss from that approach to benefit from it the other 99 times is the more efficient way of going about in a race
      I can’t remember those circumstances ever occurring (could have easily happened though, maybe you remember which race you meant later), the only instance that comes to my mind is Austria 2021 where he let Hamilton by who later picked up floor damage…and Norris just overtook him again
      It‘s not about our viewing experience, it’s about maximising your result and with the tires‘ operating window being so narrow it‘s a delicate task to keep them working properly, driving in dirty air for a few laps after being overtaken is bad enough as is but with a faster car by some margin it will happen anyway…so taking a defensive line, going onto the marbles and asking more from your tires than you’d normally want under braking, turning and accelerating will lose you time and tire life (which in the end means also lost time and strategic options) and I think the results Norris gets with this approach speak for themselves

      The guy behind is much faster, be it a generally faster car or better tyres. Norris has no chance of beating the guy behind.
      So, the car behind is going to get past him no matter what but, if norris defends against it, even for a single lap or so he will damage his tryes. Then when it comes to battling the car he wants to fight, he wont be able to because his tryes are finished.

    You would never ever see a driver like Senna laying down like this. Norris is ok, but Oscar Piastri is the future of racing. He's so much better and mature as well. Lando still has a LOT of growing up to do. Oscar's already there, making smart decisions and is much better on off track presentations, where Lando has really proven herself to be petty, immature and entitled. Not goo for the sport overall, having a baby in a car acting like that.
