That is EXACTLY what I was thinking too! At first I thought it was a stupid idea, but it actually makes a lot of sense. Disney knows how to make tons of hotels, and they'd probably benefit by keeping their workers in a single place and close to the park to save time and money.
Good for you man that you were able to switch to a better job. But that's not the point. It's about taking care of your employees. They are not asking for massive raises here. They're simply asking for a minimum wage for their basic necessities. The same woman who has been working for 30yrs, was able to afford a single BHK back in the day is now living in a shared condo. That just shows you that you're wages are not being adjusted for inflation. Sadly that's the case everywhere. But what irks me is that attitude that "I was able to do better so they could too" and hinder meaningful change. Just because you were able to do it, doesn't mean anyone can. There are only so many jobs for so many ppl. And unfortunately most jobs are not even paying the minimum wage. But your CXOs make millions and write how they take care of their employees but they only care about revenues/profit and the wealth gap increases by the micro second.
TheBitBlock All the more reason why they should be making more. I mean, let’s face it: Disneyland NEEDS employees to operate, right? And people can’t commute hours each way, each day, to get to work so it’s essential that Disney pay them a living wage, and it just so happens that’s in California.

Not saying they don’t deserve more, but I do think $27/hr for a job that anyone off the street can do is a bit much…especially since some college graduates aren’t even making that much. Also, $15/hr at 30 hrs/week comes out to $1800/month before taxes…I know California’s expensive, but even on minimum wage, its hard to believe a person with 4 other roommates still can’t afford to buy food for themselves.
For everyone making excuses about California being expensive. So? London is expensive, yet companies manage to pay their employeess more so that they can afford to live. We have a 'National minimum wage' and a 'London living wage'. The LLW is higher than the NMW because obviously, living in london is a lot more expensive than the average to live in other areas. The same goes for other major cities in the world. Yes, everything is more expensive, but you get paid more. Does your money go as far as someone who gets paid less in a cheaper area? No. But you can still afford to live in a HOUSE and not a car.

Really? Because big brands like Mc Donald’s, Starbucks and costa in the city of London pay around 7-9 pounds an hour and that’s depending on age. Personally having worked and lived in London my entire life, the minimum wage doesent meet up with the renting/living cost. I think what you said is obviously depending on the job and level but entry level the pay doesn't match.
you guys should just take an example of Stockholm, Copenhagen and Oslo, a slice of pizza with a can of coke cost €10-15. but nonetheless everyone has a home here and almost everyone is financially and socially happy, part of the reason is the brilliant utilization of the tax which covers a lot of benefits the government offers here.
London also does a better job of managing their housing market and providing other services to its residents, such as public transportation, healthcare, and education.

I have some friends that work at Disney.... They actually went to college for costuming and art design, and are immensely talented. They're some of the lucky ones - they work close to full time and make a bit more than minimum wage. They're still struggling. I don't understand why they can't be paid more.
that too. people dont realise they under value themselves then complain they dont make any money. The flip side of the same coin though is a lot of people are pretty useless with the skills they do posses and arent worth a higher paycheck. The problem these days is people dont move for work. Humans used to go where the work was. Now we find a spot and sit there demanding we get paid more so we can afford to live there.
The problem at Disney is the same problem across the nation and across sectors. Companies aren't paying more because they haven't found that they need to. Unemployment is down but our economy is broken, and wages rarely keep up with inflation which means every year we are getting a pay cut. At what point do we as a nation wake the f*** up and take a page from the Europeans or other countries that have solved this already?
I have gone to Disney and what the workers do doesn't seem or isn't easy. I surprised by how much they get paid considering the amount of money my parents payed for a single day in the parks. Honestly shocked I never knew this.
Isn’t it like $200 for a 2 day pass? That’s what I remember paying last year. Wonder what the operating costs are for these parks... I’m sure people spend a lot at these parks in Disney collectibles and food. And I don’t think Disney has an off season.
I used to live in Orlando where its worse. Disney also does things like supports you going to work in an overseas park and will pay you in the currency worth the least. Their "college program" and foreign employment programs are essentially indentured servitude, you have to live in Disney housing and your paycheck goes back to them, some people don't get enough hours to make rent. they also have inspectors that watch everything you do.
The reported profit for the parks that I came across was around 1.3 bn. I don't think it will be enough to increase wages for the thousands of park employees. For the size of the parks, I'm surprised their profits are so low. Most of their growth is coming from the Chinese (including Hong Kong) parks.
I did not know that! Disney does seem to attribute its parks' growth to overseas parks in its quarterly reports. Their robotics and/or animatronics are pretty superior. Esp in the tunnels of the railroad and attractions like It's a small world. I wonder how Universal survives though.
They aren't flexible with their employees time at all. Lots and lots of my friends work there and no... getting time off is impossible. You'd think since the company ABSOLUTLY NEEDS them to show up (like a rn or md) maybe they should pay them accordingly?
@@prittyugly86 Since their skill set is easily acquired, just about anybody can take their place. They won't raise their pay because they know if their employees quit, there will be an endless supply of replacements waiting in the wings.
wishfulwanderlust 1) You definitely save money by having employee benefits. That's a fact. It's not even up for debate. 2) Why would she spend her money on Disney merchandise? That's not what benefits are... They're not giving employees Disney Dollars for "benefits" lol 3) A lot of people, including myself, have multiple jobs. That's reality. It sucks, but maybe she should consider that option. Btw, the Florida residents who work for Disney don't even pay state income taxes.
wishfulwanderlust The discussion is over? lol If only running away from reality were THAT easy. Full-time is usually 40 hours... And according to you, that's enough to afford a place to live. Benefits are not discounts on Disney merchandise. Disney employee benefits include: - Weekly pay - Affordable healthcare insurance options, such as medical, dental and vision coverage, may be available for full-time positions - Limited medical plans may be available for part-time positions - Vacation and sick leave for full-time positions - Retirement plans may be available for full-time and part-time positions - Costumes/uniforms provided for certain positions - Annual pay increases and premium-pay incentives may be available for certain positions - Employee stock purchase program (Full list of benefits= parksjobs.disneycareers.com/benefits) I'm not blind. I'm realistic. Many people have multiple jobs if one doesn't pay enough. Slave labor?! Sweetie... I actually just laughed out loud. I'm in college... Not that my education level has anything to do with this conversation. Also, I personally know a lot of people who work for Disney who make a shitload of money. Specifically, waiters in the Cinderella's Castle restaurant. They leave with a few hundred dollars in tips each night. Another family friend of mine has been working at Disney World for over 25 years... By choice, and she LOVES it. I don't work, not have I ever worked, for Disney. I'm not even a big fan. The parks are a little too busy for my liking. It was more fun in the 90s and early 2000s. I'd love to see a link/source for wherever you got that "8 cent raise" information. I'm working multiple jobs because I'm a college student and a freelance photographer, who needs money to support my hobby, which will hopefully turn into a professional career one day. Most people would call that "hard work"... Something you don't seem too familiar with.
Annie working at a job for 30 years is not desperate to have a job, and secondly the employees in Orlando, Florida do not have this problem because cost of living is a fraction of California.
amazing that this was filmed 2 yrs ago. These poor people were probably hit hard by the pandemic. And just today, the effort to pass $15 min wage federally. was kicked down the line yet again. America really is a sorry sad country.
" *if it's bad, then leave* " seriously people. It's hard to find a job these days. AND TO THOSE PEOPLE WHO KEEPS SAYING THAT THERE ARE LOTS OF JOB AVAILABLE, REMEMBER, NOT EVERYONE IS QUALIFIED.
That’s nonsense. Unemployment is lowest it’s been in US history and there are tons of job openings in tech and other very high paying jobs such as truck driving etc
mothership love I don’t think age has anything to do with it. The younger generations have realized being rich won’t happen for many reasons. We all just want to be ok. We want to live comfortably and not have to worry about where our next meal is coming from.
This a a great example of human exploitation. A slice of pizza at Disney cost more than what they get paid an hour. But yet they make them always have a smile on their face and treat everyone so well
Disney should pay all their character actors at least $50-60 an hour! That’s how much I make as a piano teacher, so I’d imagine every Disney character actor - who goes through extensive, brutal, dedicated, difficult training, mentally and physically, to prepare for their select Disney roles - would earn even more! Disney expects the actor to literally BECOME the character and morph into them. Plus they have to keep on a happy, eager face all day/night and show lots of affection towards the guests, even if they are completely burned out on the inside. This, to me, is a truly honorable and commendable career for them to have. Yes, it’s a true career for the actors; not simply a job. The chances of an applicant being chosen as a Disney princess or other character is extremely rare. So considering all those tedious and exhaustive parts of their work, I believe the princesses/villains/characters deserve AT LEAST $50 an hour. I’d pay them even more if it was up to me, because they truly make a big impact on the lives of children and keep their imagination and dreams alive. *Disney has a net worth of 168 BILLION as of June, 2023. They’re more than capable of giving ALL their employees a generous, well-deserved salary!*
I've enjoyed my visit with my wife everytime and I never knew that the staff are struggling with their lives. They were all so nice and welcoming. I don't think that I can enjoy visiting Disney world again.
People need to stop posting elitist comments like, "this job is the lowest of the low." As if the job you have determines your value as a person and your pay reflects that. It's inhumane. Regardless of what job anyone has, every employee deserves a living wage.
Filiprima Yeah, I totally agree. They don't think of having compassion, and instead just sit on their high horse and their secure, well paying job and look down upon others because they think their standing makes them better than others. Classic exalt of human nature. Power and money corrupts...
@@campkira lmao. Disney doesn't even agree with you. They have a award system there. After years of being an employee you get awards and gifts. My aunt was a chef 25yrs & received a gold watch and she has a bunch of trophies. Disney even paid for her culinary courses so she would stay working with them. Their "seasonal " "temporary " positions only open in summer & holidays.
Yes and to me, this was a dumb decision for Fox to make. And yes, while the merge will make Marvel fans happy. I don't see it this way. Disney is an evil company in which green printed paper only matters to them. I'll never watch another movie by them again except for the 2d classics such as Tarzan, Mulan, Lion King, and Pixar classics
As someone who is from here, I feel like the CA cost of living problem is much larger than one major company like Disney. It’s more of a microcosm of a much larger issue that the state has no idea how to deal with. I may never be able to afford a house there even with a business degree from an established university, so I can’t even imagine what an hourly worker has to do to get by. We need laws that help renters or provide affordable housing options.
Get rid of minimum wage help to make living costs go down and make housing more affordable. Quit taxing the poor and over taxing the lower middle class and over spending tax money. Convince gov to let everyone have an acre of free tax free fertile land to grow a food forest on and live on. Encourage the poor to choose a very small house instead of a bigger one or constantly paying rent when long term it would be cheaper to buy a small house. End farm subsidies. End tax breaks to farms exsept those who grow healthy vegan food for human consumption exsept no large mono crops. End mandatory school, ged and hsd requirements, age limits, minimum wage, and exsessive regs. People should be able to learn how to do a good job they want so they can afford a house and car before 18. For those who and whos parents cant afford it, tax deductible chairty and or the about 180,000dollars spent on k thru 12 per student could pay for it and trash k thru 12 and some of that money could be used to promote more independence and healthy living.
People who are working 9-5 won’t be able to afford it unless you are making $100k annually even then you had still be in debts with mortgage for few years
I was talking to a friend who said that animators (cause he wants to be one) gets paid really well. So they treat their movie department well but everyone else is 👎 apparently?
@@randomkid4783 of course they will treat the animators better. If don't get treated better they will just work for the competition. The ones they treat like this are "the disposable ones"
@Picolas Cage You have no idea how much they make in a day at those parks dude. look up the numbers and then get back to me about the cost of operation.
As a DISNEY EMPLOYEE, please go to the parks (Disneyland), that’s what we’re there for. To make guests smile. It’s truly magical and we work so hard to make it magical and I’d love for you to experience it.
There were some people saying that thses jobs are for "high-school students". In that case, literally any job which takes in high schoolers will be driving down all wages! Wages should keep up with inflation. period.
I've seen various company (Disney and others) employees brushing teeth in the bathroom, I always thought they were just maintaining excellent dental hygiene, brushing after every meal etc. It never occurred to me that they could be living out of their car.
me me No, the rich stay rich because they invest and they’re good at deal making. The poor stay poor because they didn’t have a way to invest past exchanging time for money. Education may not even have anything to do with it.
There is no reason a company of any kind owes anything to their employees outside of what’s in the contract. If the workers want reform, they have every right to ask for it but a company owes no extras if it isn’t in writing. That’s just business.
Uuuhhhhh not to burst a bubble or anything, but the living standards in California are corruptly high so even if disney decides to pay them more they will still be in the gutter.
Orange country is extremely expensive. My dad said "it's a nice place to live if you make 80k a year and your spouse makes 120k... then yeah MAYBE you can make it" maybe you can have a 3 bedroom house... maybe.
Tbh... anahiem area is the cheaper part of this country. Now, San Francisco... blows all CA out of the water. No joke. I was shook. 9 million dollar 3 bedrooms 2 baths, easy.
Austin Delaney San Francisco (especially) and certain neighborhoods in San Diego and Los Angeles are quite expensive... but the rest isn’t that high (at least from what I’ve seen I live in SD)
I agree, Disneyland's not the problem, it's the state of California's high taxes, high rent, and state-run corruption. And don't get me started on ultra-hardcore liberalism, because that's one of the major problems, and I'll just rant about it all day.
It has gotten so expensive because of far-left policies. Electing a far-left candidate will not solve the problems that California is facing, it will only amplify them. It is very ignorant to suggest that companies should have to suffer because of beyond terrible policies created by money hungry and manipulative politicians. Business owners are not to blame.
Far left? Like that rent control measure that didn't get passed? All the people saying the "if you don't get paid enough to live where your working then you don't belong there" or "if I was a landlord I wouldn't want anyone to tell me how much I could charge" are Republicans. What about "if I was renting, I wouldn't want the landlord to be able to take as much money as he could and raise my rent every single year" ?
@@prittyugly86 as someone who's seen a lotta stuff in my 2632 years of life I've noticed that both the "right" and the "left" tend to have the same goals but very opposite ways of doing it over time things get more polarising and extreme and before you know it it's a mess every which way. It's all about finding that balance. Because one side becomes more powerful than the other the whole thing comes toppling down. And it seldom goes well for the less powerful.
@@prittyugly86 So a fast food restaurant (or starbucks type of restaurant), that is situated in the high-class area of a city, should pay it's employees (that are working intro-level jobs) a wage that would allow them to live in this high-class area? Nice identity politics as well, everyone who holds (insert opinion here) 'has' to be a part of 'this' political party.
Here is the deal, Disney Company just bought 3 major studios in the last 5 years.(Revenue: US$55.137 billion (2017)That make the Disney Company one the biggest powerhouses in the Entertainment Industry. Having people stick around a job for 30 years is rare, let alone 5 years. Those who have stayed with Disney for 30 years should be getting paid $27 an hour. Those who are new with no skills start off at $16 an hour, those with a special skill or who are performers on stage or in those HOT costumes at least $21 an hour. Spread out the pay wages. It doesn't matter if you live in California, Florida, or Texas! a Living wage should be based on the cost of living in each state. No more excuses for the billion dollar corporations who use people as slaves, while they live a lavish life.
For countries like the US and China, Japan, etc that has little natural resources per capita for export in order to boost their economy, you're only asking for an economic disaster that will be worst than Europe or the Latin American nations.
This has nothing to do with exports. It has to do with local centralized businesses. International trade has NOTHING to do with Disney Corp at a local level. If you want to speak of trading with Japan and China because they actually make more of produces Disney sells then that is another issue all together. Disney Corp. HERE in the US needs to pay its employees more, plain and simple.
@PJ Reactions Sorry my bad, you're correct and I've mistaken what you've said assumed you were referring to a national level. But anyways back to the topic, if a huge portion of the profit from the share holders is given to their workers, then tbh who will be willing to invest. And you gotta admit $16 USD is a lot of money for a minimal skill job, the truth is there are thousands of people waiting in line to work at Disneyland, if people don't like their jobs Disney would be more than happy to find another person that will gladly take the task. Not sure where did you find your data but the number $55B is in total sales, not net profit. What all the investors/director board earn is only about 5-9 billion per year in the past decade, basically they're only making an average of 14% in net profit, the rest goes to salary and expenses. Even if they take away half of the net profit from the share holders, that'll only give the employees of Disney, for example someone making 10$/hr will only get an extra of 81 cents.
The $27 actually seems low for being somewhere so long, considering how expensive it is in So Cal but guess it depends on the job. Minimum wage was originally put in place to BE a livable wage but it hasn't been that for a while. I know for my parent's generation it was, for my grandparent's generation they could live pretty comfortably overall with a minimum wage, and the generation before that if you were born w/o money you were screwed. That's of course, because of the depression.....many people like to ignore the fact that a recession started during the last 20 years and it's pretty consistently kept declining, not getting better except for the wealthy. Anyone born without financial privilege now-a-days is a slave.
Aidan Reykdal I’m kind of surprised this is not how it works! I’ve heard from people working for universal studios who get their apartment included in their contract, without taking it off their pay, why won’t Disney do the same...?
That's what I would have done tbh. Have employee housing, take minimal amounts off the pay and then you just tell people that the money you have left is yours and there is no reason to complain. The reality sadly is that people WOULD still complain but that's just human nature and the hatred of big corporations that the media does to make us get angry and share their videos.
Gabzo Avro i mean I would still argue that a raise in the wage is necessary simply because this kind of entertainment work is very emotionally and physically draining (not to mention that wig-styling is an art which would be paid 30-50 an hour at least in a theatre company🤔) and people deserve to live comfortably if they work full-time... but the housing would be a minimum to start from. Working full time and being homeless is just a surreal concept to grasp...
At the beginning of the pandemic, disneyworld raised the price of their Healthcare plan, then when the NBA moved on property they forced all of their security guards to work 4 months straight without a single day off, and at the end of those 4 months they announced that they would be commencing layoffs for whoever had taken more than a single DAY off between June-October. They were not given hazard pay, they are not provided healthcare, they aren't even given a proper lunch break.
Dude they clearly should be able to be paid more in order to actually live and ya know NOT be homeless. As a member of a big business it doesnt help the employee and can affect their performance and it also hurts the corporations image so its a lose lose really.
Jacob Forbes OMFG where do you come from Russia? They are not homelessmbecause of their pay, they are homeless because of the ridiculous cost of living in California. Hence the mass exodus of Californians to other states. Disney World employees in Florida do not have this problem? Hmmm.
@@bigphillyed Alright so lets use that: Disney- one of the BIGGEST, most EXPENSIVE companies in the WORLD needs to pay more livable wages to those who work in CA (A state notorious for being expensive to live in). I believe it is easy to put 2 and 2...well 2gether. In other words, Yes CA does have this as a problem but Disney can easily help remedy it (as before in the video the lowered the pay rate as of last year so they can just move it back up as a start). Also, if they had more money they could probably move out easier and start over, hmmmm? Btw no im not from Russia, i just actually care about my other americans.
Jacob Forbes you fail to see that Disney is not responsible for cost of living in California. These are entry level jobs intended for younger Americans, not 50 year old woman who worked there for 30 years. The bottom line liberals in California have made laws and decisions that have made the Anaheim area so expensive. Her friends think she makes 30 dollars and hour doing hair? A nurse on the east coast doesnt make 30 dollars and hour. See the problem now?
@@bigphillyed Somewhat, I still think of someone works for thirty years they deserve some seniority and should be able to at least raise their minimum wage back up
I disagree with a lot of these comments. You SHOULD be able to survive based off a minimum wage job. The fact that employees are food insecure and/or homeless is crazy, especially when you know the top positions are making millions. Everyone should be able to afford housing and food. Also, saying that only people in high school or college should work there is crazy... they could never sustain themselves off of only young adults. They have tens of thousands of employees...
Nowhere in America is minimum wage designed to support a family and a two bedroom apartment. If you don't want to work harder and find a better paying job, then find a roommate and live with them. I'm all for people having a living wage, but the government can't artificially create wealth through regulations. That just drives up costs and leaves us unemployed.
Haha minimum wage isn't enough especially in areas like the SF Bay Area and SoCal. You need a minimum of $300,000/year to raise a family, go on vacation, save for retirement, save for children's college tuitions($7,000-45,000 per child), save for a house(which is averaging ~1-2 million for a house in a good safe area with good schools), pay for utilities (electric, water, internet, phone bills, etc). there are many things that they will never be able to do on that list. It's expensive here in California........ One of the most important things we need is AFFORDABLE HOUSING. Techies in the Silicon Valley(estimated average salary $100,000/year) are even having a hard time finding affordable houses. How do you expect people that earn roughly $24,000 a year to make ends meet? Please enlighten me...
I used to work at Disney, one of the main issues is the fact that most of the employees at Disneyland are part time workers. Most of them don’t get scheduled 3-4 times a week. They usually get scheduled 1-2 times a weeks and have a 4-6 hour shift. Because at Disney it’s all about seniority, in order for you to be hired as a full time employee you would have had to be working for the company for years. In addition to that you also have to pay a monthly union fee. Union fees range from $30-$50 per month depending on where in the park. So if you’re scheduled as a PT employee and only work a 5 hour shift 1 day a week for every week of the month + union fees deduction it’s literally impossible to survive.
Well I mean they tell you before you even apply how much money you'll be making an hour, and they give you the *option* to sign for 40+ hours (since so many people in these comments think its mandatory, when its not).
River I'm not saying they don't have mandatory overtime, I'm saying signing off on 40+ hours is not mandatory. When I applied, I signed for 40+ hours because I chose to and would have no problem working near 50 or 60 hours. If you don't sign, they won't schedule you over 40 hours. EDIT: So yeah, if you sign off to work over 40 hours, of course you're going to have mandatory overtime.
Like I stated in my previous comment, that is how it works in some areas of the company, but not all because it depends on the union your area falls under or lack thereof. One of the areas I worked in for about a year wasn't unionized so you either had to agree to work 40 + mandatory OT or you didn't get the position. There was no "only 40 hour max" option offered. Different areas, different rules. I needed the job and cash so I still took the position, even though we had weeks where I was scheduled an extra 15 - 20 hours.
River I can't tell what we're arguing about because to me it seems like we agree lmao. But basically when you apply, they ask you if you're willing to work over 40 hours (thats where you're given the option). If not, then you could receive nlic because of it. If you agree to it, then you'll end up with mandatory OT. Pretty sure we're on the same page but still thought I would clarify what I said just incase.
Sue them for what? These employees agreed to their wages. If they can go somewhere else and be paid more, why don't they? It's all about supply and demand: there's a steady supply of people who are willing to do the job for what Disney pays, so why would Disney pay more? Disney isn't a charity- they're in it to make money.
Fabio TheSuperModel people working in similar field anywhere else in the country, get paid the same. It is not like it was before 30 years ago. Now everyone requires some kind of education, certification, or license to earn a better livable wage. And if they do have difficult surviving, I personally think they should look for jobs other places, where they can be paid more. This is the harsh reality of how many Americans are living. They live pay check to pay check and always had such problems.
Darshil Patel All of this. Stories such as these are going to increase as the years go on. With automation/AI, outsourcing and companies just flat out leaving the United States for greener (read as dirt cheap labor) pastures on the horizon, people really need to start evaluating and planning their lives at a much younger age. You can see some glimpses of that in the generation coming up. Useless material possessions aren’t as big of a deal as they are to boomers/gen x’ers. They aren’t having kids until way later on in life, some aren’t having them at all. The ravage consumer capitalist society we know now has a time limit and the clock is ticking.
It is so sad to see that the United States has more or less failed as a country now. Normal hard working people there are held down by their necks and exploited with no mercy. No one can get ahead. Healthcare costs 10x the rest of the developed world. I hope they can make a change and see that you really can have a fair system that is fruitful for everyone, not just a few.
So true. I have an ivy league degree and law degree and a good job but i have to borrow money from my teens babysitting job to buy us groceries. Have no idea how I will pay for her education...debt its the only way open to you as an American so you pay the bankers their interest on all you need. First question on the federal student aid application is your age. Aid counselors at colleges inform you the first thing that is done is they figure out how much debt you can pay in in your remaining lifespan.
Failed as a country? Lord you're dense. That must be why on average around 15 million people try to become citizens here annually. That's what people do right flock to failed countries?
What are you basing this “normal hardworking people are exploited with no mercy and no one can get ahead” from? It’s pretty straight forward as someone living in the US that it is very possible to get ahead
GriffinLisuk If your parents make money, you will make money; if they don't, you wont. That is how the US system works essentially. Yes, there are outliers, but those are the exception. If you work hard enough on any level, you can probably survive, but I personally wouldn't equate that to living.
I was born in Japan and grow up going to Tokyo Disney all the time. Becoming to Disney employee (preferably a performer) has been one of my dreams since I don’t know even when. After high school, I moved to the US to learn English and get theatre training. This makes me real sad. It makes me wonder if I should keep purchasing my dream. I have an annual pass. But ever since I learned about this issue, I feel guilty every time I visit parks for supporting this poor wage system. This is pretty shameful.
Tokyo Disneyland isn't owned by the Disney company. The parks in Japan are contracted. Disney sold it to the Oriental Land Company, which is a Japanese company. Disney still has some control over Tokyo Disneyland but they cant control the wages or financial stuff cause they don't own the parks in Japan. So technically, you aren't working for Disney if you work there. But you should still check to wages if you do decide to work for them.
The key is research, Emma. Research and asking questions :) There's nothing wrong with pursuing your dream, but make sure you know what you're getting into before you get there. When I'm doing job searches I'll usually search for the salary I would make at a specific job in a certain location. For you, that could be specifying which Tokyo Disney location you'd want to work at, and specifically looking up performer wages. Then you could compare it with the costs of living in that area, to determine if it's a feasible living situation for you. As for supporting the parks, at least in my opinion (you can take this with a grain of salt) I would finish out the year I had on the pass, but then use that money next year to support smaller parks or organizations around the city instead of renewing the pass. It'll give you an opportunity to try new things and have new experiences, while hopefully supporting companies who actually treat their employees right.
I grew up visiting Disneyland with my mom, back when it was more affordable to go AND to live in SoCal. In the 90s it wasn't as bad as it is now. I still would love to return to Disneyland with my child in the next year or two, I also feel guilty about this but at the same time.....If you're going to feel guilty about Disneyland you'd have to also feel guilty shopping at most department stores, Walmart, Target, most grocery stores, etc.... If anything I just decide I will try to be extra kind to employees while I'm visiting, keeping in mind if something goes wrong during the day, or they are in a bad mood we are all just people trying to scrape-by. :(
Christine Hsia Huh, Japan's Disneyland employees are paid far better than their American counterparts? I don't know where you got this information. Most employees make 900-1200 yen per hour (9-12 dollars), performers up to 1350 yen (btw, 900 yen is a totally normal wage for any job that's not full-time, even if you actually work full-time, but don't have a full-time contract. Good luck getting one of these, btw). And Tokyo is by no means cheaper than US, so...

I was able to keep a roof over my head. It wasn't great income, but I was able to make ends meet. Fast forward to 2018, was in between jobs and needed to get some money flowing. Isn’t California’s minimum wage at $16/hr now?
No. But you can still afford to live in a HOUSE and not a car.

when i worked at disney i slept in my car too! and was homeless for at least half of the first year that i worked there! my parents had to help with rent for the rest of the time i was there because they were so worried about me living out of my car- when i started out i made 9.40 an hour and then when i transferred to a “skilled position” the pay increase was literally to what they’re being forced to pay everyone now- working at disneyland is cool and all but you’re not treated nearly as well as what people would think

oh man- they did not give me good hours at first at all- i used to work from 10:30 pm to 2:30 am, 4 hour shifts 5 days a week while i was in college. it varied a little after that, but never more than 40 hours a week or you’re considered full-time and they have to give you benefits. omggg i wish $9 an hour was liveable here 😩 when i lived in anaheim, my rent was $950 a month for my half- our 2 bedroom apt was $1900 plus hundreds in utilities because we shared our electricity with disney, making our electric bill anywhere from $300 or more every month, whereas the people in our same building who technically lived in orange paid about $50. it’s crazy expensive! i 1000% could not have afforded that apartment on my own. flip side is i went to disney the other night as a guest and it was wonderful!

hi there! so my apartment complex was a little odd in the fact that it happened to sit right on the border of anaheim & orange- i happened to be on the anaheim side. because disneyland uses an insane amount of electricity everyday, i guess that made anaheim’s electricity more valuable/expensive? basically the people on the orange side of the complex paid a fraction of what we did because their city didn’t have to pay for the electric light parade every night
I have some friends that work at Disney.... They actually went to college for costuming and art design, and are immensely talented. They're some of the lucky ones - they work close to full time and make a bit more than minimum wage. They're still struggling. It boggles my mind, because they could easily be paid quite a bit more if they worked for a different entertainment company. But Disneyland is their dream job. I don't understand why they can't be paid more.
do you understand that it wouldnt matter?
They "can't" be paid more because people are willing to work for less. For their "Dream Job".
that too. people dont realise they under value themselves then complain they dont make any money. The flip side of the same coin though is a lot of people are pretty useless with the skills they do posses and arent worth a higher paycheck. The problem these days is people dont move for work. Humans used to go where the work was. Now we find a spot and sit there demanding we get paid more so we can afford to live there.
Working your dream job doesn't make companies have to pay you $30 a hour
Despiser Despied you should put on some pants and get out of the basement.
And they say:"Disney is a FAMILY company".
More like a company for rich families.
Disney says it helps with education in that area for it's employees. You can't go to school when you can't afford basic living expenses.

I agree, Disneyland's not the problem, it's the state of California's high taxes, high rent, and state-run corruption. And don't get me started on ultra-hardcore liberalism, because that's one of the major problems, and I'll just rant about it all day.
this makes me so angry. the amount of companies they own their employees deserve not just a livable wage but a good salary. sickening
Despicable, the cost of living for southern California has gotten so high and the wages have not moved up with them.
The phrase "if you don't get paid enough to live where your working you don't belong there" is true. Nice identity politics as well, everyone who holds (insert opinion here) 'has' to be a part of 'this' political party.
@@perlerbear5279 then high class areas of cities shouldn't have these kinds of businesses.
What if Disney made affordable apartments for their employees? I'm not saying that it's the best solution but it might help.
Aidan Reykdal I’m kind of surprised this is not how it works! I’ve heard from people working for universal studios who get their apartment included in their contract, without taking it off their pay, why won’t Disney do the same...?
Frédérique James because Disney’s greedy
Working full time and being homeless is just a surreal concept to grasp...
they actually have that in walt disneyworld the problem with anaheim or anywhere near anaheim is that they would struggle for space really badly.
How is Disneyland possibly be “the happiest place on earth”? Just that thought is absolutely ridiculous.

This should get more attention. NBA players (I'm talking to you Lebron) should talk about this
Dude they clearly should be able to be paid more in order to actually live and ya know NOT be homeless.
I disagree with a lot of these comments. You SHOULD be able to survive based off a minimum wage job. The fact that employees are food insecure and/or homeless is crazy, especially when you know the top positions are making millions. Everyone should be able to afford housing and food. Also, saying that only people in high school or college should work there is crazy... they could never sustain themselves off of only young adults. They have tens of thousands of employees...
Laura Douglas minimum wage was never intended to be survived off of
Nowhere in America is minimum wage designed to support a family and a two bedroom apartment. If you don't want to work harder and find a better paying job, then find a roommate and live with them. I'm all for people having a living wage, but the government can't artificially create wealth through regulations. That just drives up costs and leaves us unemployed.
I'm sorry but you must live in a town that is very cheap to live in unlike major cities like LA.
Minimum effort minimum eage
That's exactly how working for an airline is... 😔
May i know whats a union fee us? And i havent heard this union fee in airline company working as a pilot in my countey
When Disney owns marvel, but you find out they were really the villains.
Well I mean they tell you before you even apply how much money you'll be making an hour, and they give you the *option* to sign for 40+ hours (since so many people in these comments think its mandatory, when its not).
I had mandatory OT when I worked at Disney. It depends on your area/union or lack thereof.
This is so painful to watch. Honest hardworking people being ripped off what they deserve.
Disney should be sued for how they treat their employees. This is an utter disgrace.
@@BlckCloud73 I agree they can't get sued but just pay the people an honest living wage its ridiculous
@@BlckCloud73 Theoretically, economies should work that way. But economic model doesn't consider greediness of some human being.
Nothing will change. This world is on the brink of collapsing and we are all going to suffer for it.
Just remember that Japan's Disneyland employees are paid far better than their American counterparts.
