Although at this point, I can't really justify calling things PTX do a cover. They make things their own so well that it just needs to become part of their catalogue.

I think this is one of the most important videos in recent history. The song is timeless but the message PTX delivers, and the example they set, as a perfect little microcosm of humanity is what we need to see.

Heartily agree. It’s incredible. And if you haven’t yet - watch Avi direct it to a stadium full of choral students. It’s cellphone footage but still is mind blowing!

My ear also always gravitates to Avi's voice in the PTX videos he's in. Listening to this song, my ear follows him throughout, but especially when he does those octave drops so effortlessly, and at the very end, when he's writing his letter and his voice is like resonant velvet (to coin an odd term).

So I was on my phone and the notice came in and the first thing I said is "he didn't do this yet?" Standard questions people have. 1. No Avi isn't that short he is 5'11" but Scott is 6'4" and Kevin isn't much shorter.
2. Cards - the one they pass the 2 members share the identity in common, the other is what makes them unique and different from the others eg Avi is Jewish, Kevin is black, etc.
And I heard that taking the card from Mitch was the first time Scott came out publicly as LGBTQ+.
@@DennisKovacich I have seen the same thing but have been unable to confirm it. This video is from 2017 and Scott and Mitch had been doing Superfruit for years before that so I wonder if maybe it was just a direct acknowledgement for Pentatonix specifically as a first?
@@gailseatonhumbert9199 yes but any time before that in superfruit only Mitch would ever say I’m gay or when asked about their sexual orientation Scott would remain quiet while he let Mitch answer. Yes most of of knew or suspected he was but was the first time he ever acknowledged it publicly for the world to see. Even all those year when he was dating Alex he almost tried to pass him off as a friend and roommate. Once he came out he was more comfortable talking about it and writing about in their superfruit songs for the Future Friends album.
That Perfect Circle cover is great, brings such a different tone to it. Gotta say though, I tear up pretty much every time I listen to the PTX version; combined with the video it’s such a powerful message and sentiment I wish more people would live by these days.
It’s tough out there right now. I feel it personally with the physical location of our academy as well as emotionally as a human being. It’s rough

So happy to have you back in the Pentatonix fold... you were missed! This one is perhaps not so musically innovative as many of their others, but it sure does get you in the feels. And in that respect, is absolutely true to the Lennon original. Thanks for your heartfelt comments on Avi. He did provide such a solid base/bass to so many of their recordings. Hope you will find time to react to more PTX!
I missed doing them tbh. But we were getting obliterated for a while on the blocks haha. You should keep close eye on the channel this coming Tuesday ;)

First I was surprised you had not reacted to this. Second, the wall of sound at the end is amazing. Only PTX can do that so beautifully. And the message--wow. While we may have differences, we also have similarities. But most of all we are human. If that doesn’t touch your soul, we’ll I just don’t know. One of PTX’s best in my opinion

Yes, yes, yes....thank you for the recognition of Avi's contribution....I love Avi's bass just floating along giving it all such warmth and soul. So happy he got to lead this off... Yes i agree Kevin is a magician with his percussion ....

The song Standing By, is a must listen for one of Avi's purest performances with PTX. He takes the lead and Scott supports on the base line. They never made a music video of it but the is a live in concert version... I have it set for my alarm every morning. It fills me with as much joy as possible at 4:30am.

All of them are so very talented and take me on an emotional rollercoaster every time. I enjoy hearing you point out certain aspects of each of them, the song, and overall analysis. What a great message of diversity, acceptance, and love. This.... touched me. In so many ways.

This is absolutely my favorite cover that I've heard of this song. When they were handing off the signs, they were handing off something they had in common with the person next to them. It's such a powerful message that all the differences we mark ourselves and others with are potential things we have in common with them. It doesn't matter who's standing next to you. There will always be something you have in common with them.
Did you ever react to Pentatonix' cover of "Say Something" (my apologies if you did and I just missed it somehow). It's another one with Avi and I think you'd love the chords and harmonies in it and I keep meaning to tell you about it but then I forget because I get so wrapped up in your reactions.

How can you not be drawn to Avi!! Then there is KO with the INSANE vocals!! I always direct people to this video when they say they never hear Kevin sing with PTX.
The first time I heard a Pentatonix song was hallelujah! I kept thinking where is the music coming from? And all their songs it sounds like there’s music playing in the background! It’s just phenomenal. They are harmonizing and the layering of voices and sounds to create this magical Performance! I just came across your website today and I watched a bunch of your reviews of Pentatonix. You have to listen to Bohemian Rhapsody and also Mary Did You Know! Hands-down you’re one of my favorite reviewer’s!
The aperfectcircle cover is actually the first version of this song I heard growing up. I didn't realize it was a cover until my dad said something. ^.^''

My friend.... I checked out Perfect Circle's version, and wow it was indeed very powerful. There's a very small artist that I found that did a similar cover. "Maddy Zanatta" and it literally made me cry watching it. I would love to see you react to that. The contrast of how hopeful's Lennon's version was in contrast to the BLM protests of the last few years were unbelievably poignant.

I’ve watched this video probably hundreds of times yet The ending still gets 🥲 me every time. I don’t always“hear” Avi, but I ALWAYS feel him.

I agree about Avi....from day one his skill has shone out. Love Mitch's voice as well as Scott, Kirstin and Kevin's amazing talent. But Avi is the man with me.
This is truly a glorious golden oldy by PTX. I encourage you to check out their newest releases. "Seasons of Love" shows Kirstin hitting it out of the park; their new version of "A Little Space featuring Ateez" is a real bop; and the BTS mashup of Butter+Dynamite is a dance party!!!

I love Pentatonix and have since my kids saw them on TV as they were growing up. They do beautiful harmony and are absolutely amazing with the way they use their voices. I miss Avi but have gotten used to and like the "new kid" and also enjoy listening to him. They are a wonderful group full of feeling and love for each other, music and the people they sing to. Enjoy.

It’s amazing that, all those years ago, Lennon sang this and it’s still completely relevant today
Because of their skills & the fact that PTX was already a living example of those of different backgrounds * working in harmony (pun intended!) I knew it was gonna be good, but then them showing their labels, some unique to them & some shared, it adds even more to their performance & the message. Also they could've gone overboard & done a much fancier video, but they rightly wanted the focus to be only about the lyrics, their presentation of it, & their message made with the cards.
* I say different backgrounds because they are all American, but are from 3 different areas of the U.S., have 6 different ethnic backgrounds (Kevin's parents being from 2 very different countries) & on top of that both Kevin's parents are immigrants, making him the 1st generation of born American in his family.
Regarding Avi…. I can 100% relate with how you feel about him. With no disrespect to his replacement (sorry I don’t know his name) Avi is my favorite. And I’m bummed that he is no longer with the group

I just finished the Perfect Circle cover... WOW!!! The minor chords actually made me a little uncomfortable listening. But I think that was the whole idea. It was dark, gritty, industrial and apocalyptic feeling.

Thank you for that - may I recommend 'Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy' as a completely wordless one that they did (and got their 2nd Emmy for - I believe?) BUT also Kevin's solo effort of 'Down' or Avi's 'The Summit' or 'Full Moon'? Kevin's is a video - Avi's would both be audio - just breathtakingly beautiful in different ways

Oh, I'm with you on that. People, if you have never listened to A Perfect Circle, do it. Especially that cover. Best concert I've ever been to was APC opening for NIN in San Francisco in 2000. What a blast it was.
PTX is a true example of how people of different races, genders, nationalities, religions, & sexual orientation CAN work together, respect each other & live in harmony together (literally, in their case;)!

So, went and watched the Perfect Circle cover, it was pretty good. That sound took me right back to the 90s I swear, sounds like what I was listening to in high school lol. But it is a much different take on the song for sure. (and gotta say those weird singing baby dolls in the video lmao wow)

I have never heard any bad covers from Pentatonix. They are in my list of elite artists that includes Angelina Jordan, Diana Ankudinova, Jinjer, Dimash Kudaibergen, all of which you have reacted to, but also Aurora "Through The Eyes Of A Child" live is better, Marcelito Pomoy"The Prayer" and the TNT Boys "Listen" on Little Big Shots. As a guitar teacher I am really surprised that you haven't done any reactions to Alip Ba Ta yet, self taught professional level acoustic guitar hobbyist in the mantap fingerstyle. You also would probably be interested in 2Cellos "The Trooper Overture". Finally here are three incredible rappers that you might want to check out Tom McDonald "Castles", NF "Mansions" and Harry Mack try one of his Omegle Bars Rap, warning many of them have swearing, so if you don't want that on your channel you might have to edit it out or find one of them that doesn't have any swearing. Enjoy.

Am I crazy or does Abby's voice sounds like a double bass played with a bow. It has that warm "strings" quality to it. You can almost hear the resin covered hair stands of the bow against the fat strings of a double bass.

I like to hold onto a hope Avi Kaplan returns to Pentatonix at some point. He is the Gold standard and adds so much depth to their sound that is just about impossible to replicate with anyone else.
But what about Matt? I've grown to love him too.
Matt fits in the group so well and is better suited with their newer songs. To bad Avi quit but he is doing great with his solo work.
I don't have a problem with Matt but, being an instrumental musician and bass singer both my musical and personal preference sonically is with Avi.
BTW, I suspect not having Avi's contribution in their arranging may also be the reason the songs have changed in the way they sound.
I think they lost a definite "something" when Avi left, and at first I was really upset. However, I'm so glad for him that he's found his peace. Perhaps I'm way off base here, but I think it's been a great thing for both the group and for Avi. PTX seems to have a preference for music more in the pop style, and imo Matt fits into that better. It's a matter of personal preference of course, but my ardor for the group waned after 2017 when they all but quit doing these "classics" and went more "mainstream"...the overwhelming talent remains of course, but the choice of material isn't my cup of tea. My only "complaint" is that we aren't seeing/hearing more of Avi's solo work.
The Perfect Circle version was interesting but truthfully I will never listen to it again. Just a little too disturbing.

His voice is just superb.
That's a loss on you then, Avi decided to leave and move forward. You should do the same and move forward without that mindset if you really like Pentatonix. Because their quality hasn't gone down at all and have been making great music. I'm sorry you can't enjoy it anymore. 🙏
