Thanks so much for making this video. I spent a whole $22.99 fixing this, instead of paying the plumber $185/hour. You saved me a ton of money and now I understand how faucets work and feel comfortable doing this again.

I just completed this shower valve replacement using this video. Thanks. On another note... I live downstairs. When I turned the water off at the street, I turned the valve on to drain the water. I waited until the water stopped before removing the valve. However, water was still in the pipes leading upstairs to the water heater. So once the valve was removed more water flowed out and some got behind the wall. Luckily, I had a rubber funnel with me and stuck that under the entire valve so most of the water got detoured into the tub instead behind the wall.

You know, as a Christian, when someone provides valuable help to others, I just can't help but express my gratitude - above all, thanks so very much for just throwing in that little comment that Pfister warranties their cartridges for life - you saved my cousin $35.00 - thanks again.

Just wanted to say thank you for the video. Watched your video and didn't realize how simple it was to replace this valve. It saved me quite a bit of money. Called my plumbing company and was told it would run about $250-300 (parts and labor) just to fix. So, I got on Google, looked up the part, found at local hardware store, came home and replaced it. All told, took about 2 hours (watching video, figuring out problem, Googling, buying part, putting back together). I know, 2hrs, but c'mon I'm not a pro.

Thank you for your video. Pfister really did help us with the customer service. We had to call 3 times to get the right part (ours was old) but there was no charge and excellent customer service! Plumber originally wanted $ 1000.00 and cut holes in the walls! Thank you and thank Pfister!

Hey Tbone - THANK YOU for posting this video. I've got the same shower you do and I did the whole project step by step following your video. I even learned about the free replacement from your video. I came close to needlessly going to Home Depot and buying one. Good thing I found your tutorial first. Price Pfister sent me a replacement for free with 1-day shipping. You saved me a fortune. Thanks!

Thank you TBone for your clear concise visual on replacing my shower faucet. I love to do this stuff and was so glad to have found you on RUclips.
Thanks to you I discovered that I could get my replacement part for free. It arrived in 2 days. I set up computer and your youtube video in the bathroom and got my tools (remembering to turn off the water), and had it fixed in 15 minutes.
I have a few tips for others. Investigate the part you remove and make sure that the old washers are attached. One of mine attached itself inside the plumbing, but being an old Surgical nurse, I noticed this and removed it before I pushed the new part in.
I also had to adjust the swing of my handle by rotating the front black swing control so I got the hot water I wanted. I imagine this adjustment is used to prevent scalding.
    Thanks so much

UPDATE: finally getting to fix my tube faucet with the same problem. I believe they said anything past 95 they have a lifetime warranty on. They sent me the part (which was 10 business days. And did what was done here. It works great now. Thanks for the video. Only thing I did was put caulking in the inside of the silver plate to help keep water out which uou may have done as well but not sure. Thanks for the video!

Props to Price Pfister for standing behind their products. Gave em a call and they sent me a free replacement cartridge without any hassle. Good thing too cuz lowes wanted $35 for a replacement cartridge, no repair kits for these. And Price Pfister sent me the newer 1 piece design shown in the video. Didn't charge anything for shipping either. Showed up in 4 days. Best customer service experience I've ever had. Thanks for the how to video. Made changing out the cartridge a breeze.

When you pulled out that inner most cartridge piece, you showed on your video that it was lacking the two rubber washers in the grooves to it. These washers often stick inside and you really need to ensure that they are not left behind so that when you insert the new cartridge with its washers in the groves, that they do not have to then rest upon those old washers, which can actually negate any leakage you are trying to resolve. Always check the cartridge to ensure you have also removed those original washers. They really need to be replaced with new washers and not doubled up, as you seem to have done. Look at frame 4:10/7:37 to see that you showed the one side still holding the old washer, but not the leading side in the photo. If you did get both old washers out prior to insertion of the new cartridge, then all is fine, but you simply overlooked mentioning it if you did. Not being critical at all, but that may be the reason that the new cartridge was taking some additional pushing and manipulation by you to get it into place, as you mentioned in the video.

Nice video my friend. I had changed my cartridge. On my cartridge it appears as if there is a way to control the amount of hot water you get buy a small black ring on the front of the cartridge. Didn't notice is yours was like that also it's not a big adjustment but it does change from the larger amount of hot water to a small amount of hot water thank you for the video though very nicely done

This video was especially helpful. My bathroom shower only runs hot water so I found out that it was due to a broken controller. This video was really easy to figure out how to take the handle and plate off to get to the controller. I only wish that I knew that the controller itself is not carried by the local hardware stores. I have to get a replacement straight from the manufacturer.

Helpful video. I just popped out the mixing valve seals and springs and thought that was all of it. Looks like I need to find a whole new cartridge. My seals are looking a little glazed. Put it back together to get water back on and scrubbed the seals well with a rag and used plumbing waterproof grease and put it back together while I track down the proper cartridge which I'm not finding at the big box stores at the moment.

  • @warrenabernathy6892

GREAT Info!! Cartridge came apart and went back together as stated - THANKS!!
The only couple things I would add is to make sure you turn off your Hot Water Heater when you turn off the water supply - if (for whatever reason) you leave your Hot Water Heater on and the water runs out, you could possibly burn out an element.
The second thing is to turn the water supply back on BEFORE you put the big round silver cover panel back on and check for any leaks. Sometimes, the part may not fit properly (see comment below) and if you have already put everything back together you just have to wait for a leak to 'appear' - that's never the preferred way to find a leak..
    Thanks again - great video!!

  • @secordman

I watched a few of these videos but yours was the most clear. What confused me at first was that second piece. The replacement from Price Pfister is all one piece. Key thing, keep a hand underneath when removing and reinstalling the screws. Also that black circular thing inside the front might have to be loosened and the tab moved to the six o'clock position. (Hard to see, at 4:50 the black part of the new cartridge has a removable black ring that has a small tab). Mine was at 7 at first and I was getting lukewarm water, moving it to 6 o'clock meant the faucet could turn enough to get the hot water.

Thank you for this I have the same problem. Same manufacturer too. But I have a question : My showerhead leaks but only in middle of the night. One Plumber told me replace the cartridge but my handyman neighbor thinks just clean out the shower head if it is not leaking all the time. He thinks there is sediment in the showerhead that only needs to be cleaned out. Did your showerhead leak all the time when off? or just sometimes like mine in the middle of the night?

I would first check the house water pressure. Lowe's has a gauge that you can purchase to check . When i use mine I disconnect the garden hose and attach the gauge to the water line. I think the pressure needs to be at 50psi (Google for the right specs) if it check out fine it is possible you have a clogged water line. I would then remove the shower head and turn the water on and try to flush out any foreign objects. If that doesn't work, removes the cartridge and flush out the line that way. Also when water is being used from different parts of the house, irrigation system or even doing laundry, this can also decrease water pressure in the shower. Let know how it pans out

Hi Tbone, that was a nice video. Thanks. The problem with both of my showers is that the pressure is very low. I think the valves might be clogged as the guys who repiped the house in copper left the galvanized nipples in place. I installed new copper nipples and elbows in one, but the pressure still seems low. I'm wondering if some debris may have clogged the valve. Is that possible and can I clear it? What do you think?

One question: I notice that you did not use any silicone grease, although some of the generic (and maybe not applicable to this model) "how to replace a cartridge" web sites and videos say silicone grease should be used. Is silicone grease not needed for this model?
