I felt guilty for feeling the way i did with my criticism of this show but im glad you got the same ears as me. Glad you enjoyed it too. Well mine was Dublin 4 days ago. But still same issues, some songs translated well and yes Arena shows are better. But jesus people also need to stop being so chatty at a gig like this.

I was at the Twickenham show last night and was blown away by the performance. Fantastic tune after Fantastic tune, the boys delivered. I had a cry at the Fletch tribute, sang my heart out and felt the energy throughout. Even the little bit of rain at the end felt perfect. If this is the last DM show I ever see then what away to cap a 30 year period of seeing them live. simply amazing ❤

The grabbing hands grab all they can. Depeche Mode know this better than most. The fantastic spectacle of outdoor stadium rock is thrilling even if the average sound quality and chasm dividing the legendary performers from the adoring DM family was not. The deeply woven attraction of Depeche Mode and that depressing and inescapable realisation that we will never see their like again makes me very grateful I was there. 🥀

I saw the band in Stockholm a couple of weeks ago. That was my 20:th concert with the band and on my top 3 list of concerts with DM. Dave and Martin had a chemistry between them that I've never seen before, perhaps a consequence of Fletch's sudden passing. This newfound chemistry fed into the energy from the large crowd (perhaps 30-35k) and really made this gathering in the "Church of Depeche" one of the most memorable concerts ever.
I'm happy that my kids joined me and that we shared this experience. And I'm happy for all the first-time visitors that got to experience one of the best live acts ever performing at this level.
Now I'm just waiting for the gig in Helsinki in August.

I'm glad to hear some people had a good experience sound-wise. I was at L14, lowest tier at the back and the sound was AWFUL. I loved it, I had an amazing time, the arrangement of the tracks was fantastic but the sound truly sucked. They may have managed to add depth elsewhere, but it was a muddled swamp of reverb where we were standing. Everyone around me said the same. If we hadn't know the songs, it would have been impossible to even recognise melody at times. Agree that Christian was a huge blast on the drums. My daughter, 12, who I took as my emotional support daughter :) didn't know the songs very well but she also had a great time.

I was L14 too (Row 24, seat 104). AS a guitarist, keys player and part time sound engineer...... the 30-60Hz low end was WAY too overpowering. The whole seating was vibrating in resonance. Needed notching down. it was evident from the first drum beat of the support act. I THOUGHT it might be the position - front and centre at the back could have been in a bass node - BUT its very evident in this video almost side on - ruclips.net/video/Kb2D-BpMGHU/видео.html AND n this one from the floor ruclips.net/video/8J_8dJkHFtE/видео.html so Im blaming the sound engineer.

I'm an American who got into DM six months too late for the World Violation tour, and of course a couple years too late for the 101/Rose Bowl show. When this tour was announced, I immediately bought tickets for stop #2, the San Jose show. Their live performance of "Speak to Me" had me in tears. I got home from it and decided to look into finally living my dream of seeing them on their home turf and upon seeing the only show in England on that leg was at Twickenham, my interest was piqued. Why just the one show in their country of origin? Why that location? When I looked at the details for the arena, it hit me -- this could be my Rose Bowl show; that many fans (4x the capacity for their typical American shows) in an outdoor arena and actually on their home turf. I HAD to go, and nothing was going to stop me. So three months later, I found myself in a rugby stadium on the west side of London on June 17, 2023. It's an experience I'll never, ever forget. So thanks to all the other fans who made that show what it was.

Thanks for the awesome review George, you’re always on the mark. Im yet to see any of the shows this tour , I’ve been attending since SOFAD ( which the opener Higher Love made a lasting impact on my perception of DM). I think Ghosts Again comes across flat clearly from all the live uploads I’ve watched so far. It can clearly use a slightly different intro as on the record the entire arrangement is brilliant but in a big live setting can use some tweaks to do it justice. I find my cosmos is mine is like a time stamp a proof that the band still wants to experiment & I love the song & can’t wait to hear it live even though I know it may not be the most appealing. I think Speak to me, Always you, Don’t say you love me , Never let me go, should make some appearance on this tour and give a rest to songs like Precious, I feel you. Nevertheless I know I will enjoy the 2-3 shows I plan to attend.

Saw them in Bern on June 11th. I mostly agree with you about your comments. I first saw DM in ‘86 so my story goes back a long way. The slow intro thing has always been there for me. In 86 it began with Christmas Island. Tour for the Masses began with Pimpf. Both those songs are intriguing and instrumental, where it’s more of a rhythmic and atmospheric feel than a real melody if I can say. I appreciate this and so did I this year with My cosmos is mine.
For me Everything Counts and A Question of Lust were definitely the highlights of the show. I’m grateful the did such a great show. I only wish I had been longer. A few more songs like Blasphemous Rumours, Leave in Silence or even New Dress would’ve perfectly fit in the bill.

Dear Vaughn, what a fantastic review. I've been waiting watching it until I visited yesterday's Munich concert. I counted back and it is actually my 10th Depeche Mode tour since 1986 and, as you correctly said, it was one of the outstanding ones in years. The set-list was well balanced, Martin and Dave harmonized with each other as they haven't for a long long time and most of it all they spread joy in what they were doing. Some Swedish guys behind me, who flew in the night before, asked me whether I think that it was their last tour? I dared to say: No, I don't think so, they'll be back again. I and many others will keep their fingers crossed.

Hi Vaughn, I've been a Depeche Mode fan since 1986 and I love your RUclips channel. I like the way you describe and analyse not only the musical experience but also the whole situation and the atmosphere at the Twickenham gig.
I'm going to the concert in Berlin on the 7th of July and I'm soooo excited but also really nervous. This will be my 4th time seeing them but it's 30(!) years since I last saw them live (on the Devotional Tour). My favourite Alan was still part of the band then and that concert sticks in my mind as the best of my life. Since Alan's departure I have been reluctant to go to their gigs because I was afraid I might be disappointed with their "new" live sound.
I actually went through a phase of not listening to their music much at all, not even the old stuff. Andy's death last year came as a real shock and made me realise that if I want to see them live ever again I would have to take the first opportunity.
After listening to your review (and reading lots of other people's comments) I now feel confident I will have a great time at the concert and am sure I will love the show. Thanks 😘

It was a sublime night and I was fortunate to purchase a golden circle ticket and saw the show very close-up, about three rows back from the front, left side, in front of Martin.
I agree with your review and not surprised that days after the show it's something that has lingered on.
I've been fortunate to have seen Depeche Mode live since 1984/5 and have seen them several times in the UK events, plus seeing Dave with the Soulsavers in 2021 at the London Coliseum with a front row dress circle seat. Also the fortune to talk briefly and shake hands with Peter Gordeno after the show.
The vibe has remained constant throughout the years, Dave Gahan being able to take full control of the stage and being one of the greatest showmen.
When both Martin and Dave came on stage, the first emotions I saw on their face was something that initially looked daunted by the prospect.
But the stress or anxiety was gone after about 3-4 tracks in and Martin had pure emotions flooding out of his face, especially when the audience carried on singing rather early into the set; taking Dave Gahan also by shock. Do you remember when he said that maybe it was early for a sing-a-long?
I took some great photos and videos and met some absolutely wonderful people at the gig. Everyone felt the vibe and everyone was spellbound.
Very glad you have produced a very positive video relating to the night and glad that you enjoyed it.
Having supported the group in the UK since I first heard them [Everything Counts] on a compilation album [The HIt Squad], I went out and bought their first 3 albums within a couple of weeks.
I then bought every new album on the day of release and sometimes on every format available!
Biggest regret being invited to a party that Martin was going to attend in 1985 and turning down the opportunity.
Seems the UK media had to eat humble pie in the end, plus most likely all the people I tried to convince over the many years!
The Twickenham Concert was no doubt, the best gig I have attended over the 38 years of seeing them. I won't mention what I thought after seeing them for the first time! :)

Mr. George, you forgot to talk about one thing: the chemistry between Martin and Dave. Do you have the feeling that they are more "relaxed" and on the "same boat" in contrast with the last tour? I saw a lot of videos from this tour and, from my prospective, i feel like there is not the tension in the air that there was during the Spirit tour. I went to the Spirit tour in 2017 and i had the impression that both Martin and Dave, at times, didn't want to be there.
I have yet to see them in person in this tour (i'll see them next month) but i feel like the band is more engaged and relaxed. It's not like they are on stage because they have to be there but they are on stage because it's fun.
I would like to hear your opinion on this.

I was there. Great venue, great atmosphere. The preshow music was awful. Felt like the kind of music you'd play on loop to get information out of prisoners. So pleased when it stopped. No idea who the support band was but i didnt appreciate their music or their attitude. They had an air of they felt they were too good to be there and took themselves way too seriously. Agree with you on the opening song. After so much excitement and anticipation of the start it left us feeling a little underwhelmed. But as you say the gig proper starts on the second track and we're off on a journey of emtion and highs. Loved it all and will remember it always.

Yeah, it used to be the sound was purposely bad for the support to make the headliners sound superior. Obviously DM are above this kind of nonsense, but the sound crew ain't got the memo!!

Hi Vaughn, top review of an amazing show. I can tell you’re still buzzing! The boys were on top form and delivered a fantastic performance which blew away all my negative thoughts about the venue. I couldn’t get over how good their vocals sounded (no more growling Gahan and OTT vibrato from Martin) and Anton’s stage design was awesome, but what really shone through was how comfortable they seemed, with each other and with the audience, and the warmth that radiated in both directions was on another level, so much so that it made me forgive them for the lack of variation in the setlist (“do do do doo, do do do doo…”) and just enjoy the moment! Also loved the touching tribute to Fletch. But VG, in your excitement over A Question of Lust (which was great) you forgot to mention Soul With Me, a particular highlight for me - such a moving song, although it was almost ruined by the people in front of us who chatted and laughed throughout (and did the same during Waiting For the Night - sacrilege)! I was not fond of the venue - a nightmare to get in, dingy corridors (you were lucky to enjoy the VIP lounge), not the best sound and what was with the interminable wristband queue?! Thought we’d never get in there! But the show was amazing, I am still buzzing, and still wearing my pistachio green nail polish in homage to Martin’s guitar. If I win the lottery I’ll be jumping on a plane to see them again…😊

Thank you for the video Vaughn. I was at the gig on Saturday and I loved it. I had seen DM in the arenas before and that was the first time at the stadium, so I was a bit worried how the sound quality will be. That was beyond my expectations though, as the sound was very clear on most of the songs and not too loud (at least when standing just outside the golden circle). ‘My Cosmos is Mine’ was a bit flat for an intro indeed/not building up like ‘In Chains’ for example but it was still ok. I loved ‘Wagging tongue’ performance although it wasn’t my favourite on the album. ‘Wrong’ and ‘John the revelator’ were a nice surprise. I think Wrong is a great concert song with that hip hop kind of feel. ‘Ghosts Again’ definitely not great for me and no surprise here. It s a really good tune but I don’t like the album version and for me this song in particular deserves more than that heavy handed production approach they ve been practicing for the last 18 years. I think it would sound great as a more downtempo and instrumental song like when they performed it live for BBC Piano Room earlier this year. Finally, but most importantly Dave Gahan was unbelievable and top form. I was first a bit worried about him being that pale but soon I realised that he was actually the Dracula😄who as the night was falling turned into a real nocturnal beast spinning round and stealing all the souls. Martin and Dave performance was so solid, You wouldn’t say this is over 40 years old band. Great pleasure to watch and listen.

Great to hear you thoughts about last night concert. It was great seeing them back in March when they were in LA (The Forum). I also feel some songs should be played without the drums, as it was originally done. It feels like such an arc as today, June 18th, is the 35th anniversary of when they played the Rose Bowl for their Concert for the Masses. It's always great to see them, but this time it was bittersweet without Fletch. Keep up the good work Vaughn!!

Hello, Vaughn! 🎵🎶😃 🎵🎶Greetings from Poland! 🇵🇱 I've been watching Your super-interesting Depeche Mode videos for quite some time now and even if I haven't seen DM live ever yet 😇, I really like them too and I'm soooooo happy that You had such an amazing unforgettable and lucky experience at yet another gig of Theirs (Wow! 😮) - kindest congratulations! 😎 👍 Knowing Your true passion for the band, I'll quietly/shyly admit that I'm quite a casual Depeche Mode fan, who (obviously) "Enjoy(s) The Silence" and "Personal Jesus" (by the way, I'm a Christian ✝ 🙏, so I think comparing a person's care on Earth 🌍 to such a Special, Heavenly Care is such a beautiful comparison/acknowledgement, too 😃 💖 🕊). Other favourite DM classics of mine are "Policy Of Truth", "Walking In My Shoes" and even "Just Can't Get Enough" 🕺 😃, but... Maybe this might surprise You, but many of my faves come from the "Depeche Mode-ern" 😉 era - I mean such hits as "It's No Good", "Dream On", "Ghosts Again" and the songs which are also my Super-Dad's faves - "Freelove" (specifically, the Single Mix by Flood) and "Precious". That might also be because, when I first discovered Depeche Mode, that was already in the "Exciter", 2001 era and I was a little boy back then (I caught up with the "Ultra" era and the earlier eras later). 😇Because of that - and because of my Big Love for pop-rock drumming 🥁🥁🥁🥁, just as much as for pop-rock singing 🎤- I never had any problems with Christian Eigner's grooves. I may have gotten as used to it as You and the other Golden Fans got used to Alan Wilder's (also masterful) contributions and I understand/fully respect Your criticism, when it comes to Christian's pop-rock style and fills. At the same time, I'm super-shy to admit it in front of You, Dear Vaughn, but without Christian's grooves & fills (which often also remind me of my other Hero - Phil Collins - because of the super-cool concert toms 😎 ), listening to Depeche Mode wouldn't be 100% the same for me... 😇 This is why I'm super-extra-happy that now, You also enjoy Christian's (current) style. I feel like You understand fans like me as well! - Thank You sooooo much! 😃 By the way - Vaughn, I don't know/remember if You mentioned it in Your videos about the drumming in DM, but since I already know what You aren't a fan of, when it comes to Christian's drumming, I'm curious to know what You do appreciate in his playing - even now, after Christian's sound improved in Your ears. 👂👂 Take care, kindest regards, all the very best, sorry for writing such a loooooong message 😇 and thanks (in Polish: "Dzięki" - You can say it somewhat like this: "Jen-kee" 😃) for everything. Reach out and keep being great! 🎵🎶👍😃 🎵🎶

I was in the golden circle standing section about 100ft from the stage, over to the side on which martin plays, and in line with the speaker stack. I thought the audio was very boomy, with a sub-bass drone thru a lot of the tracks sadly. I thought the drums were too loud in the mix and during tracks like WIME and others the melodic and musical parts were just way too quiet. At times it was difficult to hear the 'music' and some of it sounded a bit discordant i thought! I tried moving around and didnt seem to make much difference. Worst part though was during the less well known tracks lots of people were bloody talking! And talking bloody loudly to be heard over the music so i got the hump with that. Otherwise though I loved it. I thought WRONG was very good actually and didnt suffer from the issues i mention. I've always admired that song, its clever song lyrically i think.
Above all Dave was magnificent - what a frontman - gotta be consistently one of the best ever. And Martin is great to watch just cause he's martin. Those two are just so awesome that all other factors melt away. Magnificent.

Classic songs not aired in years could get a whole New Life with a modern approach, or just hearing them alongside modern songs. I agree on everything, but would put some more emphasis of the visual aspects, that were so excellent. For My cosmos is mine for instance, I experienced it in a closed hall, and it starts in the dark, with only the painting M, making it even more mysterious and magical. Stripped suffers from a comparatively bland visual, reusing the same as in Walking in my shoes. Enjoy the silence is the masterpiece, with the skulls in contrasting colours 🙂

I've seen them more than 10 times since 87 in Spain, and although they've been very good every single time I think this is probably the best and most balanced. The sound was amazing, the vocals top, the difference to other tours: more electronic sound and less stress of acoustic drumming as you point out and Dave's tone more natural whereas from PTA his approach was more "blues". Obviously Dave dances around less than 20 years ago but they make very good choices of order in setlist to combine fast and relaxed songs and the visuals cunningly shows things happen faster they actually do. I agree on Wrong! One of the best numbers, a pleasant surprise, and A Pain... I think they finally got right this version which is not easy to play live. Waiting for the Night... unforgettable, I had seen Martin do it alone in another tour but this was much better: the way they supported each other showed a connection between both that we hadn't seen before. Long live the Kings!

The visuals were outstanding. I think they worked with a dance company.

Great show but where we were down on the pitch, the sound quality was really poor at times. Way too much base to the drums, sounded like a cheap car stereo turned up too far.
    Still loved it though
