Plot idea: A succubus keeps luring people away because they only think succubi use sex to lure people, and don't suspect the nice elderly lady who keeps offering them cookies and tea

To be fair, the whole deal of a succubus is sex (at least as a mythical creature). I agree that charm in general is more than that but sexual seduction is an obvious choice for a female sex demon.

I like how asexual is listed, when its a sexuality, not a gender or sex (which is what the person seems to be suggesting). Perhaps he is mistaking androgynous for asexual, but I'm not even sure if that would be categorized as a "gender" as its simply an appearance that is ambiguous / having aspects of both male and female sexes. THE CHARMED CONDITION DOES NOT REQUIRE THE TARGET TO BE SEXUALLY ATTRACTED TO THE CHARMER (at least in 5e). The charmed condition means your character is magically inclined to regard the charmer favorably. Asshole's just mad bc he rolled a nat 20 Persuasion to try and bang another PC and she said, "My character is ace, but also persuasion isn't mind control so even if my character was attracted to men she still wouldn't immediately jump on your bone just because you asked nicely." Oof, sorry, I needed to vent.
The only 2 thing that i remember that imply sexual attraction are the Temptation domain and Lust domain from 3.5 Two narrow, situational and pretty weak domains with minor benefits that can be accessed only through demonic pacts

@@realdragon Except you can't use command to make someone do something they see as harmful. Forcing someone to have sex with someone they don't want to is generally considered harmful. Heck, just decided to look through the spell list and even something like Dominate Person, which you could argue can make someone do harmful actions...only lasts a minute. I mean, maybe that's long enough for you to have sex with someone, but that's not most people. MAYBE you could argue for Geas, since it just specifies a command can't be inherently suicidal, but it also doesn't say they HAVE to do what you say, just that they take 5d10 psychic damage if they act counter to it. A lot of folks would take that over being forced to have sex with someone they don't want to have sex with, even if they like the person (are charmed by them)

When trying to seduce my asexual character, our DM had the succubus offer cheese. I failed the roll, which honestly as a heterosexual would work better than sex anyway.

@@samanthacousland870 there are cases where someone that is xx or xy will present as the opposite chromosomal configuration. being xxy doesn't change those odds much and will almost always be male. you could think of x as sort of the base where y is the trigger to make you male.

Fighter: Okay, basically the same as Barbarian. Look I"m doing this for free, ya get what ya paid for. Monk: New meditation methods to help them focus OR actual unique magical items for monks (we can dream) Paladin: The location of an item that will up their STR, CON or CHA since they definitely would like more of one of those. Ranger: A spell that will make people finally stop doing "rangers suck" memes. OR an item for their animal companion OR if they're a ranger without an animal companion tempt them with an animal companion. Rogue: Any good sneaking item, a big score, or pull the barbarian route and have someone want to hear their story of their best score. Sorcerer: A way to find out which particular dragon their ancestor screwed and how to get some of that hoard money. Warlock: Depending on their status with their patron, either a way to get further into their good graces OR a way to get out of their service without losing their powers. Wizard: an amulet of health that also grants the tough feat. Or, ya know, mystic lore or something.

Honestly if the only way you can think of Charm effects working is sex then you’re just solidly unimaginative. One of my favourite interpretations of Odysseus meeting the sirens is that they’re not just singing some sexy song but it’s all a euphemism for offering knowledge and foresight, something the trickster figure of Odysseus would have craved over all else

This feels like it can only remotely be a problem if a player doesn't tell the DM their character's orientation that being said, the way I run succubi is that they are hideous and their charm is an unnatural ability so it works on everyone.
As a fellow ace, if you want to charm someone who's asexual, offer them garlic bread, ice cream, or any dessert and they can happily help you move forward with your adventure. From her behaviour at the session, it sounds (to me) like she didn't just not want to be there... she also didn't want her partner to be there. So she started issues which resulted in the game ending: Mission accomplished. Now, her partner doesn't get to go and do something that doesn't interest or include her.

Unfortunately there is a lot of overlap between incels and pædo's. About the assexuality OP post: That reminded me of a small moment in a campaign I was in. My character is ace nonbinary. And we were in front of Azmodeus. Here's what I found cool, Azmodeus on this DM's perspective was like, undeniably attractive for everyone. Everyone. The party had a straight barbarian, a bi elf, a couple of lesbians and a panssexual warforged. So everyone saw Azmodeus with a different flavor of "sexy". The barbarian saw the demon as eerily affeminate, the exact words of the DM were male bimbo. The lesbians saw him as a very sexy lady, but clearly with that deep voice like Doctor Girlfriend from Venture Brothers. The bi and pan saw him as this absolute himbo and my character.... .... here's where I lost it and started cackling. Azmodeus was just a tall, tubby cozy dude, in a maid dress. While he spoke, between sentences, my character kept hearing "Are you comfortable tho? We got tea, I can massage your temples after this...". Here's the funny thing.... I'm the only one that failed to resist the charming spell, so everyone was like "You won't seduce us foul demon!" while my character was like, ".... are we looking at the same person? This guy seems alright. I could go for some tea..." The DM took extra 20 minutes describing this but dammit, we all got a kick out of it
As someone with combat PTSD: Over half the folks in my support group on my base had their PTSD for non military reasons. EVEN ON A MILITARY BASE combat PTSD is not the main form of PTSD.
Oh, and before anyone goes "but combat PTSD is more severe" NO. It can be, but PTSD severity often has little to nothing to do with how severe the triggering incident(s) was/were. It has more to do with what happens afterwards. And, in general, folks who face trauma in combat zones are given better care afterwards than someone who (for example) feels responsible for the death of a neighbor's child because they were the first responder when there was nothing to be done. There were also folks in my group who joined the military to get away from abusive home situations where literally no one cared about them for their first 16-18 years of life. I was EASILY one of the least traumatized people in my group.
It seems every American friend I has has a family member or close friend that has horrible PTSD from the army. Never from combat, always because the US Army is an institution of pure evil and everyone there is a monster. Most of the stories are about female soldiers... Why is America such a dystopia?
The seduction thing reminds me of an episode of Ducktails from the 90s. The gang is on a ship going some where (I think it was a parody episode of Homer's Odesy) and they come across a Siren who tries, and almost succeds, in tempting scrooge (except he gets tied to the mast) by saying "pennies, nickles, quarters, dimes, come to us while there's still time" knowing his love of money and using that as his lure. Greed can be as much a temptation as lust... I mean any of the 7 deadly sins could be the vice that a demon or bad guy uses to tempt a party member.
Greed is a natural temptation to adventurers, arguably way moreso than lust. Just think of how preoccupied the average hero is with getting "sick loot" from whatever adventure they're on. Now imagine a situation where a fiend is dangling a (definitely not cursed) +3 flametongue longsword in one hand and a contract in the other...
Though, as I've admittedly kinda gone as a broken record in a few comments here. Succubi are kinda pigeon-holed into the "The temptation is Sex" thing since they're literal physical embodiments of Lust and sexual desire.

That stress story is one I could very well have written (note, I did not write it). I talk a lot about how unbelievably frustrating it can be to have the dice refuse to let you succeed, and struggling with anxiety and stress (which I also do) can make it so much worse. Especially if you have a close shave and nearly lose a character, that can all mix together and turn what's supposed to be fun into something utterly miserable.
I can relate to that, yeah. My first and only time playing Pathfinder 2e, the dice wouldn't cooperate for anything, to the point where in three sessions I can count the number of times I rolled a double digit on a d20 on two hands, and I can count the times I hit an attack on one. I liked the character, and the roleplay, but the rolls made the game just feel... so awful, to the point where I don't think I'll be playing PF2e again; I know when a game does not want me, and Pathfinder CLEARLY doesn't.
@ethanrose9682 Worst game experience I ever had, I rolled 1 success in the entire 4-hour session, at least 4 crit fails, and my one success, the DM immediately undercut by making me do a follow up roll, which failed. Needless to say I was not back for the rest of that campaign

This is the danger of any system that only uses a single die to determine outcomes. It has a heavy reliance on luck and often doesn't reward skill nearly as much as it should. You could always swap to using 2d10 if playing D&D. This will make rolls a bit more consistent without changing the game toooo much. Granted you won't get crits nearly as often either, but I'd take consistency over crits any day.

I'd joke that they're so desperate for sex it's all they can think of wanting, but I don't think that's true. I mean I'm a cishet dude who has had some long times without any and even at my worst there's been other non-sexual things I'd want more. Hell, even if you're arguing interpersonal connections only, I'd have my seduction demon tempt a player with a long engaging conversation on whatever their player is a fan of. Not wanting sex or romance doesn't mean you don't want bonding over things.
If your game has situations that rely on magical seduction to the extent that an asexual character would break your game, tell them in session 0. Because if there's going to be a situation where a player can't say no to sex, that is something that really needs to be discussed in session 0 because a lot of people would not be comfortable with that. And, as many people have pointed out, if the only way you can think of charming people is with sexual attraction, you're not very creative.

Asexuality also grants a DR 500/- bonus in Pathfinder 1e. Unfortunately in second edition they nerfed it to just a DR 150/adamantine, which is silly. That's should be a bisexuality trait.
Phantasmal Force can be both an incredible spell and a useless spell, it just depends on how your DM rules it. "The target rationalizes any illogical outcomes from interacting with the phantasm". When the Ranger shot an arrow at the fire tornado and the arrow disappeared from his vision, I would have ruled that he should have assumed that the flames had incinerated it. If one attack is all it takes for the enemy to see through the illusion, what is the point of the spell? However, the spell can become too strong for a 2nd level spell slot. Rules as written, the enemy has to use his Action to see through the illusion. If you had cast the spell as an Iron Maiden, with spikes protruding from all sides, you have effectively blinded and reduced the target's speed to 0. If the only way for the monster to escape is to use its Action to make an Investigation check, good luck- thanks to Silvery Barbs and Hex, that monster is never getting free
I assume the arrow shot WAS the investigation check with knowledge that illusions exist and are very possible. I don't recall said arrow as intended to do damage, just spending it as part of an investigation check.
I would rule 'You see the [charmer] not as an object of lust but pure a e s t h e t i c beauty. Like a song or or colorful flower you don't want to bang it but are still captivated by its supernatural beauty.' That'll keep the ase individual happy while keeping the game fair.

i don't think the barbarian was using real soldiers as an explanation but that the enemies they're fighting are like soldiers that they can push through a stressful situation and not be paralyzed by fear from the image the phantasmal force spell made.
As an asexual person who makes asexual characters, when on the wrong side of the charmed condition it is **super** easy to have your character platonically enamored with the charmer. You can think they're really cool (like an artist or creator you like), just brush off red flags and blindly trust them, seek out their approval (like a parent or mentor), be compelled to protect them (like a small cute animal) or anything non-sexual. The charmed condition doesn't even say anything about being attracted to the charmer.
My character's charm canonically has her be so adorable that you can't bear to hurt her and are willing to forgive anything she does (within reason) like a cheeky cat, and you just *have* to spoil her.
that very first text exchange broke my heart, but i had something similar happen. accept, I'm the one who may not touch D&D again, as a player. I love my dad, he's been a DM for years, and he loves D&D, he learned to read on the monster manual books to get his reading scores up, its an important game to him. which is why, when he wanted to teach me how to play, and play D&D with me, I was more then exited. Fast forward I wanna say, 5 failed games and discarded characters later I just want to quit and never look at another dice set again. Forgotten realms is very sentimental and important to him, so he wants to always play it by the book. If I want a wand, I need to make it out of in universe materials, I cant make up my own, which is fair- untill you force an ADHD autistic kid to sit and sift threw wood types for 3 hours at the start of your game. (warlock/sorcerer if you were wondering) And, then there was my character Oliver, who had to have nearly every aspect of his personality changed to fit HIS world. Oliver to Olivise, black cat familiar to black cat friend, stealing pocket watches to stealing silver spoons. At that point i didnt wanna play him either! he wasnt MY charcater he was my dads. (he was a HUMAN TOO) But the most recent issue, and the one that stung the most, was when he was making a campaign for my little cousins, and asked me, as a somewhat seasoned player, if I wanted to join (I had played two games at that point, only one to the end, so I had more experience then they did), he sold it to me as a light hearted for fun do what ever campaign, he didn't specify level he just said give him a character. so I did. A tabaxi lich who has NO lich abilities (that he knows of). His class is bard and his name is Arcade, he looks like an arcade carpet. His instrument is his skull wich he bangs on with two mallets and makes notes by opening and closing his mouth. Dad agreed. I was happy, exited, kept checking in asking when we could play, ect. About a week later he comes to me and is all "I think im gonna limit the races" wich he only told me about, AFTER agreeing to my character. He refused to add just one more race, I told him ill yeet the lich part if I can just keep the tabaxi and he firmly said no. So I dropped the game. Hes to argumentative and strict as a DM for my tastes, and I know my little cousins are gonna be board out of their fucking minds. I just hope HE doesn't get to hurt by it, but I'm likely never gonna play a game from him again.
I'm sorry that you and your dad are a bad match for this. For any TTRPG to work, playstyles have to mesh well for every player to enjoy themselves at the table. A strict rules lawyer cannot DM for players that want a more flexible game. Hope that if you do ever feel like giving this another try, you find a table with a similar mindset.
Oof, that stress story hurt me. Cause that sounds a lot like me when the dice just don't roll your way all session. It almost makes me think that the DM throughout the story was kinda targeting them, but I think that's just me projecting and seeing the worst in people, lol.
Obviously the ranty incel guy is insane for a number of reasons but I really want to focus on the fact that he is completely okay with a GM forcing seduction magic/rolls onto players who don’t want them. Like regardless of his stupid takes about asexuality, the idea that playing an ace character is an excuse to not deal with sexual situations implies that it is by default okay to force sexual situations on characters who *aren’t* ace, which is… creepy.
Aw man that stress story HURT. I had a similar experience whilst playing Ghostbusters Spirits Unleashed with my friends - it had been our first time playing it in a while so everything had been rebalanced, so things started going sideways almost immediately and I didn't handle it very well. I clammed up in my frustration and eventually caused the game to end early. Felt like as much of an arse as I'd been acting, and I still feel awful about it now. In those situations, you really gotta step away, cool down, and then apologise. These things happen, and though it doesn't excuse the bad behaviour, sometimes you're dealt a shit hand and it's the straw that breaks your back, especially if it feels so unrelenting.
Funny thing even if they're trained soldiers being caught in a tornado of fire isn't exactly something you can just power through, first things first it will greatly diminish the amount of breathable air you have, temperature will rise so you'll start roasting like a pig, and lastly here's the kicker the little air you breathe will be scorching hot, and your lungs are moist, this will conduct heat faster than the air you're breathing meaning you're roasting your insides faster than your outsides, you'll get burns in your lungs which will put you in an excruciating pain. Whoever stays calm through that you're either undead, or a freaking warforge.

I remember when I tried to dm a game for me, my sister, and her daughters. Only one of them were actually invested, that being one of my nieces. The other niece checked her Twitter and instagram every few minutes, and my sister both fell asleep and left early to answer a very, very long phone call… I learned from that alone that a game night with the family is a horrible idea.
Counter point to the overpowered asexual characters: Any seduction effect against asexual characters simply has the monster offering unlimited Garlic Bread (cheesy variant available)
That DM really needs to look up what Phantasmal Force does cuz it forces the target to believe the illusion is real as part of its power. No amount of checks or saves allow them to discern it is an illusion and that illusion can even cause harm if it is something that could do so(like a fire tornado). So in the case of that casting, their DM hella nerfed their spell by allowing the enemy to roll a check against it and basically ignore it.
As per the spells description the target MAKES an Intelligence save and CAN make a Investigation check to realize it to be an illusion and ignore the spell. The complicated part is WHEN can the target make the check? Especially Phantasmal Force makes the target to come up with an explanation for anything illogical. Imo somebody would have to realize the target is under the spell and convince them to investigate. The spell can be avoided, however doing so after the initial save shouldn't be easy. What I'd rather know are the stats of the bard, failing due to low numbers can in fact be pretty frustrating.

Re: A Lot of Stress The thing that I feel helps my group in those situations is we have a meme channel and an ooc channel for that stuff so you don't need to hold it in. While your character is useless and you're using your turns to do the same thing over in vain or get rid of a status condition you can be crafting a quick meme to make everyone laugh *with* you, not *at* you. No, this won't magically cure anxiety, but it makes even the bad rolls fun in their own way. For example, my "smart" character has failed every single INT and WIS check he's made this ENTIRE CAMPAIGN (4 sessions) so I threw together a quick image from Spongebob with Patrick going "It's okay, Rocky (changed to my character's name though), you go when you feel like it!" Recently, we also had an arena arc. DM said there are only 2 rules, you can't kill your opponent and you're locked into either martial or magic tournament. We ask where we (blood hunter and druid) fit in. DM says martials. So we pull out Air Bud's "there's no rule that says a dog can't play basketball" but turn it into "there's no rule that says a competitor can't use wendigo arms (grappling appendages from my race, reflavored)" and "there's no rule a bear can't use kung fu" lol

I do recall a Succubus encounter in 3.5 that nearly tpkd the party as we all failed our save and we spent most of the encounter fighting each other over the creature. It was a fun encounter since we got to do some pvp.
The third story, "a lot of stress", was pretty interesting to me. I could easily see that story as a horror story from another players perspective about a bard who threw a temper tantrum because of bad rolls, even when the DM gave him the deciding blow and tried to set up a main character moment about becoming the rival of the escaping bad guy. The "trained military" comment also seemed like the barbarian trying to consolidate the GM who did nothing wrong yet was made to feel like shit just because a player was unlucky with their roles. This might not be the most compassionate advice, but if something as normal as a bad combat makes you feel so bad that the whole table doesn't feel like playing anymore then you either need to fix that about yourself or find something else to play together.

Yyeeeaahhh. I used to be one of those. As a kid. Y'know when I stopped? About 16 years old. Some people just never gain even a remote sense of self-awareness.
I relate way too much too the anxiety/stress story, but more from the DM's perspective. It's the reason why I can't DM for my brother as he's done it twice with two different one-shots. - The first one he played a dumb, agro barbarian (think Jock stereotype from old campy horror movies). I thought everything went well and everyone was enjoyjng it but then we got to the boss fight. My brother's character taunted the spellcaster boss enemy, so, I had the boss first turn cast "Tasha's Hideous Laughter" on him and he failed. So many times in a row. The other players weren't playing... amazingly... by trying to take out the minion enemies while letting the boss just sit back and do damage. It also meant that no one was forcing him to take concentration checks. The boss also focused on the squishies and didn't damage the barbarian because he was pretty smart. My players also were playing pretty slowly, due to other issues/new players, so turns took a while and the barbarian kept failing as he dumped stated both intelligence and wisdom. It got to the point that I just had the boss drop concentration for another spell because i felt so bad about my brother not being able to do anything. But, by that point my brother didn't care anymore and just phoned in everything. It ended up being a complete defeat for them. My brother ended up cold shouldering me for a while and I found out later he was extremely mad at me because he felt like I was gunning for him. It really ruined my confidence as a DM for a while and I didn't DM for around a year after that. - It was two years later that I invited him to another one-shot with my regular group as he hadn't played DnD in a while and he really wanted to be a player (he's mostly DMed). I thought that if he and my group got along well that he could maybe join my camapign. It didn't start off as well as before. He was part of the antics for the first bit but then pulled back during a joking RP moment between the other three characters. My other players have been friends for a while (two are siblings) so it was probably a bit hard to cut in? I'd ask my brother what he was doing while they were having the conservation but he just shrugged it off and saud he was looking at something. He tried to think of something during a pretty difficult combat (the enemies were really tough but stuck in a corridor and couldn't move if seen, they would cast darkness around themselves though, but they knew that they needed what was at the end of the corridor) which was more of a creativity challange rather than a straight combat one. He couldn't come up with a solution so he just hung back. It was done after that. He just ended up going on his phone the entire time. During the boss fight, he would only tune back in when it was his turn (I had to call his name multiple times, he was sitting next to me while the other players were over discord). I homebrewed the entire one-shot, something I don't really have confidence in but I'm trying to get better. I had to call off the next week's session because my mental health was so bad because I worked really hard as a DM and it took hours to make a bunch of maps from scratch (...I'm slow at it). I later found out, from my Dad, that my brother believed I was gunning for him again and purposely ignored him so he never wants me to DM for him again, which hurt... but, i wasn't going to play with him again after that again, so, yay? Sorry, this was incredibly long. I'm just glad that I have a group of players I've been DMing for, for about a year now, and they seem to be having fun. I still don't think I'm a good DM though, but at least I'm trying to improve. My anxiety and stress about sessions are still pretty bad though.

I like this definition of charm "control or achieve by or as if by magic." example: "pretending to charm a cobra" When charm something, their reaction isn't default of "This is an unknown unit, I must assess, than decide my actions" Charming someone is more like "I don't need to assess anything, I only get good vibes." Thus I kinda wish when you charm someone and pcs are like "Wanna woohoo?" Their response should be like "Only if buy me dinner first, teehee." Charm is not a love potion... actually now think about it, love potions are not roofies!
in baldurs gate 3 charm is used with harpies, however its displayed as a magical effect that just takes over people’s minds. like a little tiefling kid is the one being charmed before the encounter starts
I actual have a solution when it comes to asexuality vs seduction. Granted this only works if the source of the 'seduction' is magical, like a Charm Person or some kind of hypnosis . Have the character be entranced by something else other than the physical beauty of the source. Like maybe they are entranced by music the caster is playing or a song being sung. Similar to a siren's song affecting everyone because it's magical. It doesn't matter if the victim is a man or woman, straight or gay, or anything in between, the song lures people in regardless.
13:41 phantasmal force has that illusion clause to it, saying something to the effect of “While a target is affected by the spell, the target treats the phantasm as if it were real. The target rationalizes any illogical outcomes from interacting with the phantasm. For example, a target attempting to walk across a phantasmal bridge that spans a chasm falls once it steps onto the bridge. If the target survives the fall, it still believes that the bridge exists and comes up with some other explanation for its fall; it was pushed, it slipped, or a strong wind might have knocked it off.” So poking it with arrows would logically be a attempt to use an item and thus the investigation check wouldn’t happen because investigating it is a designated action. You’re not useless your DM is just out for you

To be fair, the whole deal of a succubus is sex (at least as a mythical creature). I agree that charm in general is more than that but sexual seduction is an obvious choice for a female sex demon.

I like how asexual is listed, when its a sexuality, not a gender or sex (which is what the person seems to be suggesting). Not how I run my tables, Love and romance are at the player's discretion. If its a Charm effect, there are plenty of non sexual ways to charm a person. Considering its a mental manipulation spell, you could even just say "You view him as your brother, your father, etc. Someone you've known for years"

THE CHARMED CONDITION DOES NOT REQUIRE THE TARGET TO BE SEXUALLY ATTRACTED TO THE CHARMER (at least in 5e). The charmed condition means your character is magically inclined to regard the charmer favorably. Asshole's just mad bc he rolled a nat 20 Persuasion to try and bang another PC and she said, "My character is ace, but also persuasion isn't mind control so even if my character was attracted to men she still wouldn't immediately jump on your bone just because you asked nicely." Oof, sorry, I needed to vent.
The only 2 thing that i remember that imply sexual attraction are the Temptation domain and Lust domain from 3.5

MAYBE you could argue for Geas, since it just specifies a command can't be inherently suicidal, but it also doesn't say they HAVE to do what you say, just that they take 5d10 psychic damage if they act counter to it.
A lot of folks would take that over being forced to have sex with someone they don't want to have sex with, even if they like the person (are charmed by them)

@@samanthacousland870 there are cases where someone that is xx or xy will present as the opposite chromosomal configuration. being xxy doesn't change those odds much and will almost always be male. you could think of x as sort of the base where y is the trigger to make you male.
I’m genuinely amazed at how many people can only connect “Seduction” with sexual acts and nothing else - do they think when Anakin was “seduced by the dark side” good ol’ creamy Sheev Palpatine was giving him the most bomb gum job of his life? Barbarian: Either a location of some great magic weapon OR someone who is totally wanting to hear all of their glorious tales of battle.
Bard: Mystical lore of a forgotten song that all who hear it love, or just someone who is a total fan of their music/act/whatever.
Cleric: A fellow disciple of their god wanting to discuss the intricacies of their church.
Druid: The location of a great beast that they may wish to find and acquire the ability to turn into.
Fighter: Okay, basically the same as Barbarian. Look I"m doing this for free, ya get what ya paid for.
Monk: New meditation methods to help them focus OR actual unique magical items for monks (we can dream)
Paladin: The location of an item that will up their STR, CON or CHA since they definitely would like more of one of those.
Ranger: A spell that will make people finally stop doing "rangers suck" memes. OR an item for their animal companion OR if they're a ranger without an animal companion tempt them with an animal companion.
Rogue: Any good sneaking item, a big score, or pull the barbarian route and have someone want to hear their story of their best score.
Sorcerer: A way to find out which particular dragon their ancestor screwed and how to get some of that hoard money.
Warlock: Depending on their status with their patron, either a way to get further into their good graces OR a way to get out of their service without losing their powers.
Wizard: an amulet of health that also grants the tough feat. Or, ya know, mystic lore or something.

Honestly if the only way you can think of Charm effects working is sex then you’re just solidly unimaginative. One of my favourite interpretations of Odysseus meeting the sirens is that they’re not just singing some sexy song but it’s all a euphemism for offering knowledge and foresight, something the trickster figure of Odysseus would have craved over all else

Unfortunately there is a lot of overlap between incels and pædo's. About the assexuality OP post: That reminded me of a small moment in a campaign I was in. My character is ace nonbinary. And we were in front of Azmodeus. Here's what I found cool, Azmodeus on this DM's perspective was like, undeniably attractive for everyone. Everyone. The party had a straight barbarian, a bi elf, a couple of lesbians and a panssexual warforged. So everyone saw Azmodeus with a different flavor of "sexy". The barbarian saw the demon as eerily affeminate, the exact words of the DM were male bimbo. The lesbians saw him as a very sexy lady, but clearly with that deep voice like Doctor Girlfriend from Venture Brothers. The bi and pan saw him as this absolute himbo and my character....
.... here's where I lost it and started cackling. Azmodeus was just a tall, tubby cozy dude, in a maid dress. While he spoke, between sentences, my character kept hearing "Are you comfortable tho? We got tea, I can massage your temples after this...". Here's the funny thing.... I'm the only one that failed to resist the charming spell, so everyone was like "You won't seduce us foul demon!" while my character was like, ".... are we looking at the same person? This guy seems alright. I could go for some tea..."
The DM took extra 20 minutes describing this but dammit, we all got a kick out of it
As someone with combat PTSD: Over half the folks in my support group on my base had their PTSD for non military reasons. EVEN ON A MILITARY BASE combat PTSD is not the main form of PTSD.
Oh, and before anyone goes "but combat PTSD is more severe" NO. It can be, but PTSD severity often has little to nothing to do with how severe the triggering incident(s) was/were. It has more to do with what happens afterwards. And, in general, folks who face trauma in combat zones are given better care afterwards than someone who (for example) feels responsible for the death of a neighbor's child because they were the first responder when there was nothing to be done. There were also folks in my group who joined the military to get away from abusive home situations where literally no one cared about them for their first 16-18 years of life. I was EASILY one of the least traumatized people in my group.
It seems every American friend I has has a family member or close friend that has horrible PTSD from the army. Never from combat, always because the US Army is an institution of pure evil and everyone there is a monster. Most of the stories are about female soldiers...

The seduction thing reminds me of an episode of Ducktails from the 90s. The gang is on a ship going some where (I think it was a parody episode of Homer's Odesy) and they come across a Siren who tries, and almost succeds, in tempting scrooge (except he gets tied to the mast) by saying "pennies, nickles, quarters, dimes, come to us while there's still time" knowing his love of money and using that as his lure. Greed can be as much a temptation as lust... I mean any of the 7 deadly sins could be the vice that a demon or bad guy uses to tempt a party member.
Greed is a natural temptation to adventurers, arguably way moreso than lust. Just think of how preoccupied the average hero is with getting "sick loot" from whatever adventure they're on. Now imagine a situation where a fiend is dangling a (definitely not cursed) +3 flametongue longsword in one hand and a contract in the other...
Though, as I've admittedly kinda gone as a broken record in a few comments here. Succubi are kinda pigeon-holed into the "The temptation is Sex" thing since they're literal physical embodiments of Lust and sexual desire.

As a charm speciailized player (I like playing high CHA races first and foremost incubi and using enchantment/illusion spells) even I'm looking at that asexuality rant like WTF?! That stress story is one I could very well have written (note, I did not write it). I talk a lot about how unbelievably frustrating it can be to have the dice refuse to let you succeed, and struggling with anxiety and stress (which I also do) can make it so much worse. Especially if you have a close shave and nearly lose a character, that can all mix together and turn what's supposed to be fun into something utterly miserable.
I can relate to that, yeah. My first and only time playing Pathfinder 2e, the dice wouldn't cooperate for anything, to the point where in three sessions I can count the number of times I rolled a double digit on a d20 on two hands, and I can count the times I hit an attack on one. I liked the character, and the roleplay, but the rolls made the game just feel... so awful, to the point where I don't think I'll be playing PF2e again; I know when a game does not want me, and Pathfinder CLEARLY doesn't.
@ethanrose9682 Worst game experience I ever had, I rolled 1 success in the entire 4-hour session, at least 4 crit fails, and my one success, the DM immediately undercut by making me do a follow up roll, which failed. Needless to say I was not back for the rest of that campaign

This is the danger of any system that only uses a single die to determine outcomes. It has a heavy reliance on luck and often doesn't reward skill nearly as much as it should. You could always swap to using 2d10 if playing D&D. This will make rolls a bit more consistent without changing the game toooo much. Granted you won't get crits nearly as often either, but I'd take consistency over crits any day.

If your game has situations that rely on magical seduction to the extent that an asexual character would break your game, tell them in session 0. Because if there's going to be a situation where a player can't say no to sex, that is something that really needs to be discussed in session 0 because a lot of people would not be comfortable with that. And, as many people have pointed out, if the only way you can think of charming people is with sexual attraction, you're not very creative.

Phantasmal Force can be both an incredible spell and a useless spell, it just depends on how your DM rules it.

When the Ranger shot an arrow at the fire tornado and the arrow disappeared from his vision, I would have ruled that he should have assumed that the flames had incinerated it. If one attack is all it takes for the enemy to see through the illusion, what is the point of the spell?
However, the spell can become too strong for a 2nd level spell slot. Rules as written, the enemy has to use his Action to see through the illusion. If you had cast the spell as an Iron Maiden, with spikes protruding from all sides, you have effectively blinded and reduced the target's speed to 0. If the only way for the monster to escape is to use its Action to make an Investigation check, good luck- thanks to Silvery Barbs and Hex, that monster is never getting free
I assume the arrow shot WAS the investigation check with knowledge that illusions exist and are very possible. I don't recall said arrow as intended to do damage, just spending it as part of an investigation check.

i don't think the barbarian was using real soldiers as an explanation but that the enemies they're fighting are like soldiers that they can push through a stressful situation and not be paralyzed by fear from the image the phantasmal force spell made.
As an asexual person who makes asexual characters, when on the wrong side of the charmed condition it is **super** easy to have your character platonically enamored with the charmer.
You can think they're really cool (like an artist or creator you like), just brush off red flags and blindly trust them, seek out their approval (like a parent or mentor), be compelled to protect them (like a small cute animal) or anything non-sexual.
The charmed condition doesn't even say anything about being attracted to the charmer.
My character's charm canonically has her be so adorable that you can't bear to hurt her and are willing to forgive anything she does (within reason) like a cheeky cat, and you just *have* to spoil her.

that very first text exchange broke my heart, but i had something similar happen. accept, I'm the one who may not touch D&D again, as a player.
I love my dad, he's been a DM for years, and he loves D&D, he learned to read on the monster manual books to get his reading scores up, its an important game to him. which is why, when he wanted to teach me how to play, and play D&D with me, I was more then exited.
Fast forward I wanna say, 5 failed games and discarded characters later I just want to quit and never look at another dice set again.
Forgotten realms is very sentimental and important to him, so he wants to always play it by the book. If I want a wand, I need to make it out of in universe materials, I cant make up my own, which is fair- untill you force an ADHD autistic kid to sit and sift threw wood types for 3 hours at the start of your game. (warlock/sorcerer if you were wondering)
And, then there was my character Oliver, who had to have nearly every aspect of his personality changed to fit HIS world. Oliver to Olivise, black cat familiar to black cat friend, stealing pocket watches to stealing silver spoons. At that point i didnt wanna play him either! he wasnt MY charcater he was my dads. (he was a HUMAN TOO)
But the most recent issue, and the one that stung the most, was when he was making a campaign for my little cousins, and asked me, as a somewhat seasoned player, if I wanted to join (I had played two games at that point, only one to the end, so I had more experience then they did), he sold it to me as a light hearted for fun do what ever campaign, he didn't specify level he just said give him a character. so I did. A tabaxi lich who has NO lich abilities (that he knows of). His class is bard and his name is Arcade, he looks like an arcade carpet. His instrument is his skull wich he bangs on with two mallets and makes notes by opening and closing his mouth. Dad agreed. I was happy, exited, kept checking in asking when we could play, ect.
About a week later he comes to me and is all "I think im gonna limit the races" wich he only told me about, AFTER agreeing to my character. He refused to add just one more race, I told him ill yeet the lich part if I can just keep the tabaxi and he firmly said no. So I dropped the game. Hes to argumentative and strict as a DM for my tastes, and I know my little cousins are gonna be board out of their fucking minds. I just hope HE doesn't get to hurt by it, but I'm likely never gonna play a game from him again.
I'm sorry that you and your dad are a bad match for this. For any TTRPG to work, playstyles have to mesh well for every player to enjoy themselves at the table. A strict rules lawyer cannot DM for players that want a more flexible game. Hope that if you do ever feel like giving this another try, you find a table with a similar mindset.

I had a similar experience whilst playing Ghostbusters Spirits Unleashed with my friends - it had been our first time playing it in a while so everything had been rebalanced, so things started going sideways almost immediately and I didn't handle it very well. I clammed up in my frustration and eventually caused the game to end early. Felt like as much of an arse as I'd been acting, and I still feel awful about it now.
In those situations, you really gotta step away, cool down, and then apologise. These things happen, and though it doesn't excuse the bad behaviour, sometimes you're dealt a shit hand and it's the straw that breaks your back, especially if it feels so unrelenting.

Funny thing even if they're trained soldiers being caught in a tornado of fire isn't exactly something you can just power through, first things first it will greatly diminish the amount of breathable air you have, temperature will rise so you'll start roasting like a pig, and lastly here's the kicker the little air you breathe will be scorching hot, and your lungs are moist, this will conduct heat faster than the air you're breathing meaning you're roasting your insides faster than your outsides, you'll get burns in your lungs which will put you in an excruciating pain. Whoever stays calm through that you're either undead, or a freaking warforge.

I remember when I tried to dm a game for me, my sister, and her daughters. Only one of them were actually invested, that being one of my nieces. The other niece checked her Twitter and instagram every few minutes, and my sister both fell asleep and left early to answer a very, very long phone call… I learned from that alone that a game night with the family is a horrible idea.

That DM really needs to look up what Phantasmal Force does cuz it forces the target to believe the illusion is real as part of its power. No amount of checks or saves allow them to discern it is an illusion and that illusion can even cause harm if it is something that could do so(like a fire tornado). So in the case of that casting, their DM hella nerfed their spell by allowing the enemy to roll a check against it and basically ignore it.
As per the spells description the target MAKES an Intelligence save and CAN make a Investigation check to realize it to be an illusion and ignore the spell. The complicated part is WHEN can the target make the check? Especially Phantasmal Force makes the target to come up with an explanation for anything illogical. Imo somebody would have to realize the target is under the spell and convince them to investigate.
The spell can be avoided, however doing so after the initial save shouldn't be easy.
What I'd rather know are the stats of the bard, failing due to low numbers can in fact be pretty frustrating.

- Ranger makes fire arrow
- Ranger shoots an arrow they think is on fire
- Arrow hits target
- "Why is the target not screaming from the fire that is actively still burning them?"
- Ranger maybe starts to make checks next turn.
If the target passes the saving throw, the spell has no effect.
@@ethanrose9682 Except the spell makes the target rationalize any thing that happens when interacting with the illusion so they would never realize something is amiss. So it wouldnt be "Why is the target not screaming from the fire that is actively still burning them?" but rather "Oh I guess that didn't work out" So I still have to stick with Ancoron's reasoning that they could only make checks after someone not affected points out to them they're seeing an illusion.
Re: A Lot of Stress
The thing that I feel helps my group in those situations is we have a meme channel and an ooc channel for that stuff so you don't need to hold it in. While your character is useless and you're using your turns to do the same thing over in vain or get rid of a status condition you can be crafting a quick meme to make everyone laugh *with* you, not *at* you.
No, this won't magically cure anxiety, but it makes even the bad rolls fun in their own way.
For example, my "smart" character has failed every single INT and WIS check he's made this ENTIRE CAMPAIGN (4 sessions) so I threw together a quick image from Spongebob with Patrick going "It's okay, Rocky (changed to my character's name though), you go when you feel like it!"
Recently, we also had an arena arc. DM said there are only 2 rules, you can't kill your opponent and you're locked into either martial or magic tournament. We ask where we (blood hunter and druid) fit in. DM says martials. So we pull out Air Bud's "there's no rule that says a dog can't play basketball" but turn it into "there's no rule that says a competitor can't use wendigo arms (grappling appendages from my race, reflavored)" and "there's no rule a bear can't use kung fu" lol

I do recall a Succubus encounter in 3.5 that nearly tpkd the party as we all failed our save and we spent most of the encounter fighting each other over the creature. It was a fun encounter since we got to do some pvp.
The third story, "a lot of stress", was pretty interesting to me. I could easily see that story as a horror story from another players perspective about a bard who threw a temper tantrum because of bad rolls, even when the DM gave him the deciding blow and tried to set up a main character moment about becoming the rival of the escaping bad guy. The "trained military" comment also seemed like the barbarian trying to consolidate the GM who did nothing wrong yet was made to feel like shit just because a player was unlucky with their roles.
This might not be the most compassionate advice, but if something as normal as a bad combat makes you feel so bad that the whole table doesn't feel like playing anymore then you either need to fix that about yourself or find something else to play together.

Yyeeeaahhh. I used to be one of those. As a kid. Y'know when I stopped? About 16 years old. Some people just never gain even a remote sense of self-awareness.
I relate way too much too the anxiety/stress story, but more from the DM's perspective. It's the reason why I can't DM for my brother as he's done it twice with two different one-shots.
- The first one he played a dumb, agro barbarian (think Jock stereotype from old campy horror movies). I thought everything went well and everyone was enjoyjng it but then we got to the boss fight. My brother's character taunted the spellcaster boss enemy, so, I had the boss first turn cast "Tasha's Hideous Laughter" on him and he failed. So many times in a row. The other players weren't playing... amazingly... by trying to take out the minion enemies while letting the boss just sit back and do damage. It also meant that no one was forcing him to take concentration checks. The boss also focused on the squishies and didn't damage the barbarian because he was pretty smart. My players also were playing pretty slowly, due to other issues/new players, so turns took a while and the barbarian kept failing as he dumped stated both intelligence and wisdom. It got to the point that I just had the boss drop concentration for another spell because i felt so bad about my brother not being able to do anything. But, by that point my brother didn't care anymore and just phoned in everything. It ended up being a complete defeat for them. My brother ended up cold shouldering me for a while and I found out later he was extremely mad at me because he felt like I was gunning for him. It really ruined my confidence as a DM for a while and I didn't DM for around a year after that.
- It was two years later that I invited him to another one-shot with my regular group as he hadn't played DnD in a while and he really wanted to be a player (he's mostly DMed). I thought that if he and my group got along well that he could maybe join my camapign. It didn't start off as well as before. He was part of the antics for the first bit but then pulled back during a joking RP moment between the other three characters. My other players have been friends for a while (two are siblings) so it was probably a bit hard to cut in? I'd ask my brother what he was doing while they were having the conservation but he just shrugged it off and saud he was looking at something. He tried to think of something during a pretty difficult combat (the enemies were really tough but stuck in a corridor and couldn't move if seen, they would cast darkness around themselves though, but they knew that they needed what was at the end of the corridor) which was more of a creativity challange rather than a straight combat one. He couldn't come up with a solution so he just hung back. It was done after that. He just ended up going on his phone the entire time. During the boss fight, he would only tune back in when it was his turn (I had to call his name multiple times, he was sitting next to me while the other players were over discord). I homebrewed the entire one-shot, something I don't really have confidence in but I'm trying to get better. I had to call off the next week's session because my mental health was so bad because I worked really hard as a DM and it took hours to make a bunch of maps from scratch (...I'm slow at it). I later found out, from my Dad, that my brother believed I was gunning for him again and purposely ignored him so he never wants me to DM for him again, which hurt... but, i wasn't going to play with him again after that again, so, yay?
Sorry, this was incredibly long. I'm just glad that I have a group of players I've been DMing for, for about a year now, and they seem to be having fun. I still don't think I'm a good DM though, but at least I'm trying to improve. My anxiety and stress about sessions are still pretty bad though.
I hope the dude who got over stressed wasn't kicked, from what I understand, they felt bad about it, and they just wanted to fix things.

I actual have a solution when it comes to asexuality vs seduction. Granted this only works if the source of the 'seduction' is magical, like a Charm Person or some kind of hypnosis . Have the character be entranced by something else other than the physical beauty of the source. Like maybe they are entranced by music the caster is playing or a song being sung. Similar to a siren's song affecting everyone because it's magical. It doesn't matter if the victim is a man or woman, straight or gay, or anything in between, the song lures people in regardless.
