This is the first Pentatonix performance ever.
they took every critic to heart and used them to improve themselves to what they are today
This was their very beginning as a quintet. This was their first ever live performance with Avi & Kevin (the original trio had been performing together since they were children). It was a bit of a rough start (not really surprising, as all the other groups had been together for a lot longer), but I will say that by their third performance, things started to quickly change for them. It didn't hurt that they were by far the most talented group of the sixteen groups that were part of the competition...that was VERY apparent from the beginning. The original Trio of Kirstie, Mitch & Scott were simply a vocal group, no beat or bass. From the start, Ben (the leader of Ben Folds Five) was the most critical judge on them, but the group members appreciated his honesty and gave him a lot of credit for helping them improve. By a certain point, even he couldn't come up with anything critical to say anymore. Shawn Stockman is now considered to be the very first Pentaholic. You need to react to ALL of the Sing Off performances in order, because it is the absolute best way to see how quickly they developed from five kids into the best a cappella group in the world! And, these performances are all in public domain, so you don't have to worry about copyright issues or getting blocked.
Before they got the beatboxer they were in high school choir. (Imagine being the high school choir director with them!) This is the first song of the competition, so it really was their public introduction. Scott, Kirstie, and Mitch were 19, while Kevin and Avi were the "old guys" at 22-23. They hardly knew each other yet as a group, which really shows as they grow together.
Ben Folds is the judge you asked about.
They are such babies in this! The "trio" were only 19. Not that they were complete novices to competition - Scott and Avi at least had experience. ETA: The judges are Ben Folds (leader of the alternative rock band Ben Folds Five), vocalist Sara Bareilles ("Love Song"), and vocalist Shawn Stockman of Boyz II Men.
Mitch, Scott and Kirstie were told they needed 2 more members to compete....so that's when they brought Kevin and Avi on board. Kevin and Avi met the other three one day before the show started. Amazing!!

Please do the rest of their performances. They get better and better with each one. The season after this had Home Free and Voiceplay both. Those were great too. Might be a fun ride.

As you watch their time on Sing Off you will see them get better and better. It's truly phenominal to watch and there are some fun and brilliant performances for you to discover especially toward the middle and end of the competition.
I watched all these Sing off shows live. I loved Pentatonix and Home Free. Great show. I wish it had continued.
Prior to having the beatboxer, they were in high school :) If you want to see something that will showcase Kevin Olusola talents, check out his solo cover of Down. He sings, beatboxes, mixes and plays an cello that he turns into an electric guitar. As a side note, he speaks 7 languages including Mandarin and was preparing to enter medical school before going into music full time.
The Sing-Off was 2011 and Mitch, Kirstin and Mitch were 19. Mitch skipped his highschool graduation to go and the other two were in their first year of college. They had known each other when they were 8 and had been friends since 10. They literally met Kevin in person the day before their Sing-Off audition and Avi about the same time as they converged in LA.
Here's a 2009 video of The Trio performing Telephone (so 17ish). This is the song they adapted for Kevin and Avi's inclusion and used as their audition for the show.

There are a couple other videos of them on Scott's RUclips page. One is just him and Mitch with Mitch playing keyboard (Scott also plays). There's also one with Mitch doing some basic beatboxing and one where Kirstie is. Mostly they just sang, though.
Speaking of the billions and billions of people - Kevin had just graduated pre-med from Yale when he decided to accept the group's invitation on a lark. He has since said he has realized via stories from fans that he has helped more people as a beatboxer with PTX than he ever could have as a medical missionary, which had been his plan.
The nerdy judge is Ben Foulds. The Ben Foulds of Ben Foulds Five. He's very knowledgable about music.

I love what the creator put together, but it does have a ton of spoilers - it was great for me, having jumped in late and watched a bunch of random videos, since it put everything into a linear story, but I don't suggest it for someone who hasn't already got a hefty chunk of their videos in the "watched" column.
