  • I do a trip up to Durban to meet Jason Ribbink of Bilt Surfboards International and he arranges a tour of Surfblanks South Africa where we meet Travis Cooper the most experienced surf blank producer in South Africa. Surfblanks South Africa is a product of years of collaboration with Travis, Max Wetland and Midget Farrelly of Australia. Together they have perfected the art of blowing the perfect surfboard blanks for the top surfers world wide. We get a privileged view into the inner workings of the factory and some super interesting inside facts into what makes these blanks so special..This is part one of a two part episode about the blanks and also the machining of the blanks that is done on sight at the factory...
This information is a must for all surfers young and old so join us and enjoy!!

I used to blow blanks in the 70s in NZ. I would call into the workshop at night after working on building our yacht. The mould was made of concrete. The lid weighed 1/2 ton and was operated with a car gearbox connected to hydraulics. Luckily we had a good extraction system for the isocyanates. and I am still surfing after 50 years of working with composites as a boatbuilder.

Would be good to explain the difference between PU and EPS

Best way to explain is to ride them. EPS is way lighter and floats more ie more bouyancy. They go very well in clean conditions but not so good in bumpy conditions as the board rides very high and can feel unstable. They thus also are difficult in strong wind when a little weight is a benefit. They are therefore very different. I love Eps in small conditions especially if light onshore when surf is less powerful and where the light weight is very helpful. Its a personal choice in the end as they both have strong points..
