I was on a boat In Navy Pier just about to sail off while the sirens were going off. We evacuated the vessel and stayed put in the parking garage. I went outside instead and it rained like crazy for about 20 minutes. One of the coolest yet freakiest experiences of my life
You never experienced tornado warning
I’m so disappointed they aren’t using alternate wail anymore. That would’ve been so cool to hear in this video :(

@@firechaser2010 It was never broken. Alternate wail is an actual signal programmed onto the control panel by Federal Signal.
Always hated alternate wail. This is a lot more straightforward and doesn't induce panic like alt wail did.

Those clouds were so dark that day, as I remember feeling my heart beating like crazy just hearing it going off. I thought I was going freeze like a statue.
What makes it more scarier seeing how some of the clouds are covering up the tall buildings in the distance

You can clearly see the rotating wall cloud. The sirens were completely appropriate.

What your referring to is the alternate wail tone. Chicagos Federal Signal Modulator sirens used to do that for tornado warnings. I think they changed it because it may have been to creepy, and last time they used that sound during a tornado warning, some people were confused on what it was because they don’t do that creepy sound during tests, so yes I think that’s why they changed it for tornado warnings

I also found a Federal Signal 2001 siren near here on my last trip. I was there a few months ago and saw it a bit north (water to the right side) of this shot kinda near the northwest corner of that short building in the distance just east of where the bean sculpture would be, directly in front of the super tall white office tower, which I figured out is called the Aon center. I bet that’s the 2001 that’s audible in this video.
I like the alternative wail better, it gives people more chills

I'm in Romeoville and they have one and the only Modulator near Village Hall that the Modulator do wail and then a prerecorded voice during tests.

I dont know tornados so I just need to ask. Is that tornado surrounding Chicago? Like is the city in the eye? I hope and pray everyone over there stays safe and gets to shelter safely. :'(
No there wasn’t an actual tornado in the city or it’s suburbs (yet)it was very likely though so the sirens were on 👍
No, that’s what hurricanes are… very large storms with an eye at the center and are hundreds of miles across. Tornados are usually less than a mile wide and carve a path up to a mile or two long if they touch down to the ground. These today were apparently a funnel cloud at altitude. On the ground, it was likely a very severe thunderstorm with winds strong enough to down trees or power lines. For a sense of scale, last week one touched down in the suburbs and destroyed about 25 houses.
@@spaceman3671 when there’s a warning, there’s evidence of a rotating cloud on radar. Just like when you unplug a train, the funnel doesn’t always go all the way down, but a warning is triggered as soon as that funnel forms as it could be moments away from touching down. Watches are lower level warnings that conditions are favorable for tornadoes to form. I think we got luck and didn’t get touchdown.

It wasn’t. During a a tornado warning on the south side of Chicago they did wail instead of alt wail on their mods, and siren head was a thing in 2020, so idk why they stopped

The siren wasn’t broken. It is a federal signal modulator that was running alternate wail. Chicago used that tone for tornado warnings until 2 years ago. They changed the tone on their sirens to do wail/attack. However for tests, they always did a steady alert tone.

What’s going on? You guys ok?
Seems like there was a confirmed tornado but it didn’t touch down, so I expect any damage to be minimal. But these are things to be taken seriously, given how unpredictable the situation is. You’d have to be very unlucky to be in the path of a tornado, but if you are it’s catastrophic. Tornado warnings should always be taken seriously!

No they took away alternate wail! This is what the sirenhead fan kids took away from us. Not trying to gatekeep sirens or blame this nonsense on kids. But what is the real reason for changing the signal to only regular wail? I can only imagine a setting change on the controller or an entirely new controller depending on the lifespan of panel or modulator itself

Idk if it’s cuz of that because siren head became a thing in 2020, and in may 2019 there was a tornado warning on the south side of the city and they didn’t do alt wail, they did regular wail, so idk why or when but they went back to doin wail like they did before 2008

i heard the one on madison and wacker was installed in late 07 ' early 08 ' which means they possibly did that because they were going to use the alternate wail tone sooner or later for the first time if a emergency was going to happen around that year such as a tornado warning. they wanted to try something new around that time. i bet they even installed a custom fast wail tone on the modulator at wrigley field around the time when the new ultravoice modulator was installed on the sidewalk in downtown since the one at wrigley originally did not have a 'fast wail' tone on the tones of the control panel before 2008.

Never in downtown Chicago, Chicago Proper. Rogers Park had a gale force funnel cloud pass through but was eventually classified as waterspout. We don't get tornadoes, certainly nothing above an E1, if ever.

I saw one right next to Wrigley field yesterday. You could see it from my seat next to the jumbotron
@@justinanderson181 it's behind a billboard style sign now but the tornado warnings before 2015 that sign wasn't there which meant it was easier to see the siren from other parts of the stadium.

@Dylan Johnson yeah agreed, but still if there was an actual tornado warning then the sirens would be scary, but if it was a test then not so much. But I believe in this video there was a tornado warning but I don’t think one touched down. I think they saw rotation in the clouds or something.

@@EpicChente30 yeah on the 2008 one, Chicago activated in alt wail /fast wail, and ab 4 mins later they went off in attack/wail, and then the past handful of tornado warnings in Chicago from 2010/2015 they did alternate wail/fast wail til 2019 at least. Idk why they changed it

Idk I’ve been wondering the same. I know during a tornado warning on the south side of Chicago they stopped doing alternate wail on their modulators and also stopped doing fast wail on the 2001’s
@@jaymesmerritt5145 i know why they stopped most likely, and the reason they can't do fast wail on the 2001s anymore is because if they send tones out for the 2001s to perform in fast wail the modulator's would unfortunately go off in alternate wail as they are programmed to do that if the 2001s go off in fast wail instead of attack. so now it's all wail/attack for that reason.

Oh gosh! That tornado siren sounds scary! I really want to go Chicago Illinois because I never been there before. It looks really nice. I bet the weather looks nice today. Right now. But in the video the weather doesn't look good. Someday I want to go Chicago when the weather is really nice and good. Not when the weather doesn't look good and the tornado siren goes off because of a tornado warning.
