We finish checking out a good friends Toro Zero turn that the blades won't engage.
Since this has been sitting the blades not engaging could be a result of many different things.
We go over these, easily diagnose the issue and get it fixed.
Sometimes on mower's that have been sitting for a long period it is not the easiest task
We show how to rebuild the deck, replace the belt, idler pulleys and bearings.
We run into some bumps along the road like any older zero turn that is rusted all to heck
The person he got this mower from said there was a hole in the block.

About Us:
My name is Martin. I have been repairing tools and small engines for almost 20 years. We operate a small engine repair shop in Illinois. We service / repair Briggs & Stratton, Kohler, Kawasaki, John Deere, Cub Cadet, Toro Tecumseh, Loncin, Honda, Craftsman, Husqvarna, MTD, Troy Bilt, Simplicity, John Deere, Exmark, LCT, Generac and many more brands. We work on riding mowers, walk behind mowers, snow blowers, zero turns, generators, pressure washers and much more. We normally repair about 3,000 pieces of equipment every year and look at many more that are beyond an affordable repair. Hopefully our videos will save you some money and give you the information you need to work on your own equipment or figure out the issue at hand.

Great attention to detail. That’s what separates a true mechanic. Great job.
Thank you steve!
Enjoyed the video - So much stuff today ends up going to the landfill. Nice to see something that needed a little work brought back to life.
Definitely! Appreciate that!
Hope it has warmed up for you 😊
Thank You for all the videos this year and hopefully many more
So much better he about 36 yesterday, a way better day for being outside for a few! Thank for as always for your support and for watching! Lots coming up!
Nice job. Just some regular maintenance, and equipment can last a long time. I have a 2004 Murray 40 inch cut. I do maintenance a lot, just simple stuff. Oil changes, oil filter change air filters, keep blades sharpened, and check belts, and spindles. About 3 years ago the engine started blowing oil out. Took the engine apart, and the top compression ring was broke . Instead of fixing the engine I replaced it with a Kohler V twin 25 horsepower. Compared to the Briggs 12.5 horsepower, the kohler was a great upgrade.
Wow I bet that thing doesn't miss a beat going through some tall stuff!
@IndRepair
No sir. Tall or thick grass the engine doesn't bog. However if something stops a blade, parts get tore up quickly. Happened once, the engine didn't bog or slow at all, it ripped the drive pulley in two, broke the blade adapter, and stripped the spindle shaft. I had the parts in stock to repair. Even with that, I'm still happy with Kohler engine.
@@bertgrau3934 Yeah, all that extra torque there be careful to police for foreign object no doubt!
Lay a couple of 2x's across the cart to hold the deck. 😊 7:57
That's a great idea! I'm always looking for ways to improve my workflow. I actually have a spare table in the middle of the shop, setting up moving everything over there now so I can just slide the decks from one table to the other to work on them
Great job. I sure hope your friend appreciates it.
I'm sure he will. He was ready to junk it!
Use a socket to seat the bearing. 😊 15:55
Funniest part is that I have bearing drivers of all sizes. Sometimes I just like to make it look hard lol
Man why would you not vacuum that deck I can’t stand working on something dirty and it’s your buddy please clean what you are working on what work you do is for sure top notch just myself I guess about the dirty working surroundings
I understand what you are saying been catching heat for not cleaning everything first from everyone. Maybe time to make some changes to this
@@IndRepair
Nah, don’t bother, Martin! 😉😂
Although you know I totally agree with all the other clean freaks, don’t do it just because everyone suggests that…or even TELLS you to do that! Yikes! Some people!
If you never have issues doing it your way and you have more business than you can handle, then there’s no real reason to change.
Probably better for analytics to let everyone comment about it anyway. Have been tossing around becoming a stihl dealer but don't want to mess with everything that goes with it I don't think. I have always done things my way good bad or indifferent. Thank you for the support as always!
I was just wondering why you didn't lube any of the nuts and bolts and shafts up before you put it back together
The shafts of the spindles do not need additional lube. The nuts/bolts being installed on the bearing (bushing) for the idler arm and the ones for the idler pulleys with just a nut/bolt will come back off without issue since they have a nut. The one into the deck is a different story why we used antiseize on it and the one that will be under the mower
Good Job Get a big Crescent Wrench on that bent trailer hitch sheet metal.
I sure forgot to do that! Thanks for reminding me
Neglect of that deck is crazy.
Also was it possible to add grease Zerks to the blade housing to keep those bearings greased? Extend the life of them?
It sure is! You can add grease zerks to anything but they would never be greased if I set it up that way
If they’re added, some people may grease it
My friend never would have But sometimes adding zerks can be helpful
Always enjoy your videos and this 2 parter doing a favor for a friend was extra good !! Merry Christmas !!
I appreciate that! Merry Christmas to you also!
Helluva job! I'm sure it will be great. My only question is what about the cover on the deck or is it a bagger.? Great video.....👍👍
I appreciate that! The side chute was off when he got it and he still has it in the garage to put back on once returned
Good follow-up video, I have a small shop myself, I work on older equip. as well.
It definitely can be a challenge sometimes as you know. Parts availability on some of it is becoming real hard!
I waited 7 months to get some simple common North Star compactor isolators
And they were 90 bucks each for two of them 😢😢😢
@@philliphall5198 Crazy stuff!
@@philliphall5198 yeah, insanity!!
First thing I'd do is clean all that grass and debris off the deck before even attempting to work on it. Next, put the deck on a larger surface so you're not fighting the deck while working on it. You can get a bearing press kit for under $100 that'll press in both bearings at the same time and save you time and fighting the deck bouncing around, falling over, etc while hammering in the bearings. I do bicycle work and bought a press kit that fits 20 different bearing sizes. Just used it the other day on my neighbor's mower for this same job. Get yourself one. Well worth the money and the time it'll save you.
Yeah for sure! Ihave another table in the other area so I am in the middle of getting everything set up and moved over so I can just slide the deck out onto it. The funny part is I have a large and small bearing press kit just never pull them out. When I am not fighting the deck it works well and is quick with a punch
Man!!!!,,,,You had a job!!!!!!!!!!,,,,Good work
It was a big one no doubt! Thank you!
One thing is a fact, timkin bearing last three times longer than the Amazon or eBay ones
A tad higher but really worth it if you’re having to pay someone to repair your equipment
They are great bearings, we try to use those or KBC
@ kbc are good
How can you tell if PILLY worn in the Grooves
If the pulley is worn it will be able to rock back and forth on the shaft
Seems they just didn’t care about the bearings slack when they replaced or sharpened the blades 😂
Bearing Smearing lol crazy some people just probably have no idea it shouldn't do that
The timecutter must be a decent machine. It ooks like your buddy has used and abused the heck out of it.
He just got it from someone I would think did exactly that
I love the Kimball Midwest lube/penetrating fluid. I use the penetrating fluid and penetrating grease. Also a very nice smell.
It is great and the smell rocks! I hate inhaling it when you are in tight quarters though, seems to burn quite a bit!
Does anyone else work in that shop, just cut I never see others there, just asking
I usually do videos in the morning before anyone is here. We have two other mechanics, a front office person and a driver
A friend and I watched the video together. When you moved the mower deck to the small work table, we started taking bets on how long it would take for the deck to hit the floor. We didn't take any bets on how much damage that would cause you.
You both bet on a certain time and it didn't quite get there. Sure would have hurt if it did! New setup coming soon will make it much easier for videos and in general. Just did it this way to better show it than it being flat but not the most safe thing in the world no doubt!
Roger that on parts, I have people that help me to reproduce some parts.
It's crazy how much is unavailable but we do what we can
It's obvious that machine is neglected 😂
Definitely! It found a new owner who will take good care of it luckily
Why don’t people blow the deck off after cutting the grass ? It’s the reason the decks rott and rust so bad
Yeah for sure! I do every time and even if the wife insists I try not to mow wet grass much as possible
I could even work on it being that filthy 🤔
Lol
I know you’re doing a friend a favor but if a customer brought a piece of equipment covered needs cleaning before repairs it should be a fifty dollar charge automatically.
I definitely agree there! He just pick it up and brought it in but we do add additional for time it is going to take to clean on badly neglected ones
That is a definite, when I do small engine repair work regardless of type of machine even if it has one speck of dirt I will hose it off!!
hack!!
Lol
Why don't you clean the deck off before you start .
I like dirty decks
The timecutter must be a decent machine. It ooks like your buddy has used and abused the heck out of it.
It was a lower end machine but usually lasted pretty well if taken care of
