Because there was no woke garbage. Plus, China started making deals with Hollywood after 2001, I believe. Notice how they can’t make films like this, anymore.
She was a "freak" after she foolishly returned to China and was ""disciplined and re-educated"" by the CCP. The fact that she still had a functional mind and soul says so much about her.
Watched this film on Netflix last night. Was expecting it to be a medicore 90's Gere film. I was wrong. This is a brilliantly crafted film that is unflinching in its story. Gere and the other supporting cast members did a superb job. Every scene has meaning and weight which makes it a great watch. And this song, man, this song really caught me off guard. There is a scene in the film where Gere and his lawyer are staring at each other while surrounded by angry Chinese officials and this song is playing. What a memorable scene. Seriously guys, give this film a watch.
The movie that ended Gere’s career and saw Hollywood blacklist him. Also one of his finest performances. I was fortunate enough to have watched this in a theater. A fantastic movie and score.
I wish I would have watched in a theater, it is by far one of my favorites. This film is top tier and gold standard value what cinema should have always been. Glad you were able to see it in theaters, a true masterpiece, and I agree his finest performance. God rest
Bai Ling is not only beautiful, sexy. But in this film she proves that she's a terrific actresss as well. Really good movie while Bai Ling was fabulous in the movie. If you haven't seen it? I highly recommend that you do. Its that good , promise you that you wont be disappointed.
i watch this scene often. Especially when I feel torn between doing what i want to do....and doing whats right. Coming from the corporate me..me first mentality that Richard Gere,s character emanated often I reflect back and It gives me pause. It shines a light down a tunnel that beckons peace of mind. Even at great cost. For this i am grateful.
this movie is filled with so many of the best scenes of all time. ive seen this so many times an now decades later this movie is about everything i hold dear in life.
+Ganaa Dany Yes, and I got the impression some of them actually respected him for that. It always breaks my heart how Bai Ling describes how they tormented her father. What people do to each other still makes me feel ill.
was wondering what is Red Corner's best scene and yes, this is the best scene. because Bai Ling's character development is far more interesting than the actual story.
The best film made in Hollywood with realistic Beijing details, this could be a memorial icon for those who really lived in Beijing 1997 like the slogan behind yellow cab and well-detailed type 95 police uniform
Jack Moore has my full respect for this act. He could stay in the safety of the embassy, yet he chooses to go back to the horrors of a local prison just so that his lawyer won't have to suffer instead of him. It takes courage to do a thing like that.
It's a lot more realistic way to end the movie, an American running for his life from corrupt authorities to the nearest embassy, it's how a lot of foreigners find their way out of China (read the whole story about the Chinese movie Empires of the Deep if you have some time to kill)
Was in China some years ago, walking through Chengdu in the evening after dinner, and going past a smaller, quiet cluster of mostly closed shops a young man asked me in broken English, "would I like to have female companion for the evening?" I said no thanks, I've seen the movie Red Corner and I ain't letting anything like that happen to me. He looked pretty dumbfounded, probably never heard that response before.
The fucked up thing is embassies almost never actually do this, despite the fact that it is one of the prime directives of them to protect their fucking citizens overseas
@GashManFlirty I suggest 'The Abyss' 'Predator' 'Alien" 'Aliens" 'The 13th Warrior' 'Braveheart' 'Conan the Barbarian' 'Crimson Tide' just to name a few. The soundtrack to this one is out there but VERY expensive for a used copy.
The lawyer is very beautiful and very intelligent too Great movie and when the gaurd came in to give him his slop(lunch) look like King prawn and whatever wise it was ewwwww lol
General Hong said il see you dead . Then shot the real murderer so he kept his word 😊 and nice he apologized to Jack 😊 put sad he got arrested for shooting Lin Dan
I hope that happens. I am tired of hearing about Chinese people running away from their own country due to oppression. China seriously needs to start treating its own people with respect.
In Real Life Is Not Like That The Embassy Of United States Of America Do Not Call In All Their Embassys World Wide To United States Of America Cost To Much Money To Call
This is a 1997 film, it's 2013 now. China has changed a lot since then, and will continue to change for the better. Many Asian countries had difficulties treating their own people with respect due to long histories of colonialism and oppression by foreign powers. Once independence was gained they needed many years to restructure their systems and reform their people's mindset.
China is good, and Comunnist idea is very good. For corruption, there is the death penalty, and not as the dirty capitalism that corruption is bad for.
ucirak Sorry to burst your bubble but Chinas government is sooo corrupt. Stuff like in Red Corner happens a lot even in 2019 and due to there being only one party that means there is a ton of political factions and cliques within the party eg the Shanghai Clique (Jiang Zemin, Li Peng, Bo Xilai etc) Xi Jinping faction (Xi Jinping, Li Keqiang, etc) the radical neo Maoist clique etc, my point is China’s system of government is far less perfect to the West’s and communism in general fails wherever it goes
This movie must of been filmed on location in fantasy land. In real life, you'd stick to that embassy like white on rice. Haha, get it? Rice? Cuz they're in China? Ya ya, bad joke.
Lance Goodthrust the establishing shots in the beginning were filmed in China. That's an they could get permission for unsurprisingly. The rest was filmed in Chinatown somewhere i think
Movies back then are way better than now. I love this movie
Because there was no woke garbage. Plus, China started making deals with Hollywood after 2001, I believe. Notice how they can’t make films like this, anymore.
Her acting is so delicate and subtle. She's a freak in real life, but she's a DAMN good actress!
I know I'm late but so true!!!!

Mike TGL Great film. And such a gorgeous soundtrack.
Mike TGL ya it's fucking great
the ending is the best of this movie.
janesgems7 Thomas Newman done great work on Skyfall too.

Can't believe I caught this comment 2d after you left it for such an old, obscure 90's film. @bkcalvine

I saw this movie at the theater very underrated. No Hollywood clichés Jon Avnet did a hell of a job directing 👍
The music in this film is so beautiful.

The music as he walking into the cops just amazing

Yes, that scene was incredible, and showed the genuine integrity of Gere's character, and how Bai Ling was so determined to fight for him.
This is a terrific film with a great deal of feeling. .... expectational
Bai Ling is so beautiful
Agreed, this is probably her best performance.

Kedai Nasi it’s the best scene for me cuz of the embassy part cuz it’s US territory

Poor Bai Ling. She got such a bad rap, but is actually a great actress.
Watch a movie called Red Corner it’s about a man getting framed for murder in China! Richard Gere best movie and my favorite of his! Ironic right!
One of my top 10 favorite films of all time!
Such a nice movie I have ever seen!.
Bai ling is gorgeous.
More relevant today than ever. CONFESS YOU CRIME!
No its not. It only has small scenes that make the movie. But those small scenes make the movie profound.
The best scene is the chase leading up to him entering the embassy.
I would have never left the embassy.

really amazing movie.
Communism, Capitalism....far right, far left...
Why can't we just accept and respect each other as fellow human beings?
Because everyone makes a competition our of everything, even democracies
It’s not that easy. Even if we were to come that it would take a long time and maybe a nasty, horrible war to end the rivalries and bitterness.

Anyone know films that have dramatic. memorable soundtracks like: ` The Last Samurai`, ` Black Rain`, ` This Film` and ` The Sentinel` ????/ Thanks
Grundii Grundy Skyfall by Thomas Newman, same soundtrack composer from this film
Such a hollywood scene.
In China, as soon as that gate opened, 20 cops would have dragged him by the hair to the car.
And how do you know that?
I wish Hollywood would still make these kinds of movies! Today's movies are pure garbage!
People should watch this just to see Bai Ling play a sane person.
I just posted the main title song in 432Hz
The music is so beautiful! I wish the soundtrack was more affordable. Amazon wants $100 for a new copy.
But maybe it's worth it?
What’s it called
I got mine for way cheaper than that! Try elsewhere. Like Music Magpie or something.
Accused Moore , why don't you just plead guilty and assist the court and investigators proceed with their investigations ?
The fucked up thing is embassies almost never actually do this, despite the fact that it is one of the prime directives of them to protect their fucking citizens overseas
it does. But, sometimes for the immediate future it can be costly....sometimes painful.
@onebeautifulman The funny thing is doing the right thing actually pays the biggest dividends in the end :)
This movie wouldn't be made in this era.
Correct! Another reason to go back in time. Today sucks.
Danny did you know that China did know about this and they got mad that this movie was made for US entertainment
With the amount of communists in this country you got that right.
