2 year update: ruclips.net/video/z7TijZsTKyw/видео.html *There are some questions that I'm getting a lot so I'll just answer them here.* Q: _How can you 'accidentally' catch those animals?_ A: As you've noticed I collected a lot of seaweed and algae. The animals were probably hidden somewhere in that algae. I did not see them. Q: _What does it mean if they 'disappeared'?_ A: In the aquarium hobby, when people say "X has disappeared" It normally means that it was weakened or dead and got consumed by the others in the tank before the aquarist knows. That's also what happened here. Q: _Why did you not return the crab back to the ocean?_ A: The only saltwater I had was the water in the jar. That water was already polluted, which was fine for in the ecosphere but it wouldn't have been good enough to transport the crab. It would have been a trip of a few hours, too long. If I had tried to take it back it would have died. Instead, it got to live another five months. Q: _If it were in the ocean the crab would have lived a happy long life._ A: If that crab was still in the ocean, the chance of it being eaten at it's small size or dying for other reasons would have been really high. Only a very small percentage of crab babies ever make it to adulthood. If it makes you feel any better, the crab nor the starfish have consciously suffered. Starfish don't have brains and crabs aren't capable of any complex emotions other than physical pain. For all questions that concern the working of the ecosystem, like: _Where do they get air?_ or _You should do water changes_ please consult this video: ruclips.net/video/K0ImENkmIBo/видео.html If you want to try this yourself but don't know how, I made a how to video: ruclips.net/video/2vm8fqqJpZM/видео.html
Coming from someone who lives on an island and is surrounded by ocean, it is SO EASY to accidentally take home creatures, and often if you live far from the ocean [foreigners traveling from place to place] it's best to just take them with you than to return them to another beach far from where you've found it, or even travel back to the same beach. The amount of stress the animal has endured + change in environment would 80% of the time kill the animal anyway. If they happen to survive, for creators like this, it's a good thing! This experiment isn't as 'cruel and harsh' like people are saying. The crab was a mere accident, and there's millions of them all over the beaches. If anything, the little dude probably enjoyed free no effort food, and no predators for the 5 months he lived there. Thank you for telling the full story! It's amazing to watch things like this. I was very interested to see what had come of the little jar.
RelentlessPedigree no it's not true at all, you're right. Just because starfish don't have brains doesn't mean they can't feel pain. They have a very complex nervous system. and as for crabs not having complex emotions, you may want to read this science.time.com/2013/01/18/do-crabs-feel-pain-maybe-and-maybe-we-should-rethink-eating-them/ they certainly can remember and avoid repeating certain instances where the suffered pain. Thats definitely more than just a reflexive action. Animals, invertebrates deserve compassion regardless. My cousins have accidently caught ocean crabs(i live on an island, and they were the same kind as that one I think) multiple times to where I had to release them, one to a wave pool, I even marked his shell as an experiment and he was still alive weeks later. They may stress, but it's better to give them a chance at surviving.
@@jaggirl yea! In order to grow larger, crabs need to shed their "shell". They do this by heading to dry land to cast off their skin and emerge larger. I learned this after my first pet crab died, because I did not provide it a dry space to shed its skin. Afterwords, I adjusted my habitat to have a "beach" area, and the new crabs did very well. I hope this helps understand what happened. :(
This may be true for some crabs but I doubt it applies to ALL crabs. Some of them live in very, very deep water and those ones probably never see dry land.

Every time I see your videos I think about how cool it would be to make really large closed ecosystems. In the order of a few cubic meters. In this case maybe simulating waves through some mechanism. Maybe have a small beach with rocks and a deeper section. Things like that. I do find these things fascinating.
How about one the Size of a stadium? Be interesting to run the experiment for decades and see how the captive life differed from their wild counterparts
@@l21n18 There were the Biosphere experiments. Those were likely a bit ambitious. Way beyond a terrarium since people tried to live in them from the start. I think experimentation with various sized closed terrariums excl. people is a good starting point. Even a stadium sized one as you suggest. Something like that could contain a drone or rover or two for an inside view and select manipulation too.
It Really did not. It died severely stunted, probably malnourished, and choking in its own shit. Ecospheres are incredibly cruel to the animals inside, including the little crab.

@@blueberry1vom1t Yeah but....those are done By Nature lmao. It's necessary for seagulls to eat crabs and other crustaceans to scavenge for stragglers. eliminate ammonia spike risks.

Me: When tiny Mr. Crab died in a saltwater jar.
that crab lived an ideal life! he didn't have to worry about predators and had a self-sustaining food source. what more could he ask for?
He didnt have a home, that place was likley not suitable for him.

Every time I see your videos I think about how cool it would be to make really large closed ecosystems. In the order of a few cubic meters. In this case maybe simulating waves through some mechanism. Maybe have a small beach with rocks and a deeper section. Things like that. I do find these things fascinating.
Thanks for giving me inspo for when I finally win the lottery
@@lizxu322 Hehe. I hear you :) Would be grand
Let's go further and make a Mars-sized terrarium, that would be dope

True, man.

That crab had an easy life :0
Just a small chill room with food just for itself and no one fighting with it or seagulls wanting to eat it.
literally was like a king his whole life
It Really did not. It died severely stunted, probably malnourished, and choking in its own shit. Ecospheres are incredibly cruel to the animals inside, including the little crab.
Hmm. Slowly cooked. I guess there are worse ways to go.... but it's up there.
@@killerslowpoke To be fair. There are worse ways to go. Getting picked up by a seagull, eaten by a slightly larger crustation as a baby. At least we can all be happy that it probobly didn't have a large or complex enough brain to know how shitty it's life was.
@@blueberry1vom1t Yeah but....those are done By Nature lmao. It's necessary for seagulls to eat crabs and other crustaceans to scavenge for stragglers. Not for a grown man to pick up a baby crab, KNOW it's in there, willingly CHOOSE to leave it in there, and then let it fester in its own shit. Have you ever slowly burned in a bath of your own piss and shit over a period of several months until you died? I don't care if it wasn't "smart" enough to know that theres a better life out there, this dude actively inflicted a slow painful death on a living creature. At least death by seagull is swift.
