I had an amazing time on the Carnival Sunshine, my first time ever sailing this ship! Have you ever sailed on one of Carnival's "reimagined" ships (Sunshine, Sunrise, Radiance) and, if so, what did you think?
I took my first cruise for my 30th bday on the sunrise in Nov, 2019. I thought the cruise was a great starter cruise, and had a ton of fun. Food was disappointing, but not bad. However, my parents said it was the worst cruise they had ever been on. Heading on the Norwegian Breakaway on May 1st, hoping to have an improved experience.
I've watch many videos about Carnival leaving Charleston and I can honestly say your video helped me the most. This will be my families first time leaving from Charleston. Thank you so much for the information.
Hey Zack! I live in Charleston and sailed the Sunshine twice. The first time was a fun cruise but Embarking day was a nightmare. The ship had just come out of dry dock and they had to change out the crew. We weren't able to board until after 4pm and didn't leave the port until after 8pm. Thank goodness second time was a breeze compared to that. I'm sailing Mardi Gras April 23rd this year. I can't wait, this will be my first cruise since pandemic outbreak.
im leaving on the 8th from charleston for my birthday as well 🥳🎉my very 1st cruise also, i hope we both have a great time & wonderful experience🥰happy sailing to you as well🛳️❤️💙🏝️🌊
Hey traveling man, the sunshine will be my first cruise, in May! Ironically I’ll be in that exact same room! Great video! And I can’t wait to watch the others for that trip.
Wow good to know about all that embark detail mess! Sadly, I’m already booked, and would still book there again, bc I’m in NC and this is much more convenient for me than the popular and MUCH farther FL or TX posts. Such that I can even drive instead of fly. But now knowing this, I have an important question! So I thought I had it all figured out. Ok ship leaves at 4, but boarding starts at 12, presumably to help get all the crowds through. So don’t show up at 3:30 duh. I’ve been thinking ok I will aim for 12 to be nice and early and since I cant get on any earlier…. But now it sounds like it’s the actual BOARDING onto the plank that starts at 12, but you can totally get to the initial parking lot and first warehouse earlier than that if you want to, and perhaps should based on the multistep process you are have mentioned? Basically, do you get your boarding time when you check in online, or do I choose, and what is too late? I’ve heard that sometimes coming at least somewhat late, you have at least beat the 12pm crowds. Thoughts? Thanks in advance, I just want to get it right or at least not have a horror story of 1.5-2 hours from parking lot to pool =0
Have had great times from Charleston over past 10 years, was glad when Sunshine come to Charleston. Since within AM driving when comparing cost from local ports vs cost of expenses to flights ect..to another it's worth it for last minute cruise getaways vs a few extra steps to get vacationing.
Thanks for this vlog! We’re sailing on Sunshine in September. Didn’t realize things were so different from other embarkations and debarkations, but we’ll be prepared for it after seeing this. Congrats on Platinum! I just made it to Gold on our last cruise.
Excellent information about the Port! Charleston is so close to us and I've always wondered why more ships don't sail from there. You helped to answer that. Thank you! I'm guessing there wasn't a sail away party? Congratulations on your Platinum status! How great to sail with your parents! Always nice to see you.
Thank you, Diane! I love Charleston. Was so happy to be back there. I think the sail away happened a bit after actual sail away. Thank you for watching, as always!
You may be able to find the French toast with cereal on it in the Dr. Seuss breakfast!! They definitely have it there. The only complaint I had on the Sunshine in 2015 is everywhere on the lido deck was always so slick you could literally slide. Glad you enjoyed the cruise!!!
The embarkation aspect makes me nervous. We have only been on one cruise and it was in 2016 out of Miami. Things are obviously a lot different at this port and different due to CoVid. Thank you for your videos!
Don’t be nervous, you’ll be fine! They have so many folks all around to make sure you’re getting to the right place. Just make sure you have all your documents and requirements when you arrive and you’ll be onboard before you know it. Thanks for watching!
Since food is supposedly 24/7, in theory we could get one last bite (maybe not official dining room breakfast), but any of the other free eateries, sometime BEFORE ship returns at the end at 8am (like maybe 6am) so that we are not starving for the commute back home, right? Also, I don't know if I will want to just jump in the car for a 5+ hour ride home anyway. So any ideas of what we might be able to do in Charleston so early on a Saturday morning (Easter weekend so that may also limit things!!). PS, since they are not checking your docs when you LEAVE (I assume), besides the actual crowds, which I know you can't avoid, I assume it takes less time to from boat to bus to the initial buildings? Or maybe bus can take you striaght to parking lot at that point?
Thank you for sharing the information on embarkation. We've been on quite a few Carnival ships but never out of Charleston. We know they will be closing the port in 2024. We live in NC so we wanted to be sure we had the opportunity to get on the Sunshine. In addition back in the year 2000 I was on the Destiny so for nostalgic purposes I was excited to see the new refurb. It sounds like we shouldn't expect to much, go, enjoy, eat, and relax. No high expectations correct? Appreciate the information.
Exactly! Just to in expecting a good time and that’s exactly what you’ll find. What a great attitude. And how cool you were on Destiny- that means you absolutely just sail the Sunshine before she leaves Charleston. Thanks for watching!
I live close to Charleston and cruised out on February 14th and was through check-in and on Sunshine within 45 minutes. We were dropped off and did not have to park. The shuttle was different but not bad. I cruise again on May 28th out of Charleston and have a lot of clients cruising out of Charleston. I hope their check-in is as easy as mine was.
I've only gone out of two ports: Charleston and Norfolk and I'll take Charleston every time! Maybe if I go out of Florida or another port I may feel differently about the process but I find the process very easy and relatively quick. I will be trying Faster to the Fun on my cruise in Jan so I'll see if that is worth the money, but regardless I love cruising and everything about it. 🙂
You should've gotten the Chocolate melting cake.. Loved it...and it was Awesome. I agree though. Embarkation was a pain in the ass.. First time sailing out of Charleston. 1st Carnival cruise.. Debarkation was a different story. We didn't even go through Customs. Do they even have one? Could've been a drug smuggler. Kinda scary. The things I hated about the ship is wifi is Slowww at times. Elevators are Slowwww. Some confusion on how to get to the dining area..
I have had so much of the melting cake over the years - love it too! Hope you enjoyed your first cruise. If you did, definitely try the larger ships out of the Florida ports for a different experience. Thanks for watching!
Ask for the taco salad at Blue Iguana and they have a lot of stuff you can ask them to put in it. I had guacamole, cream Fresca, chicken and steak, etc.
I didn’t get seasick on this one but then again I never have. Take some Dramamine or similar medicine for motion sickness just in case you do. I hope you have a great cruise!
The waterslides looked amazing! So many - I would have to try them out. Def a different vibe and atmosphere than Celebrity. The Port sounds like a mess. Sounds stressful and who wants to be stressed just as they are getting on the ship. Do you like Celebrity better?
I think there are things to love about both lines. However, for me as a solo cruiser, I enjoy the Celebrity laid back and upscale experience far more than that of the Carnival experience. The latter is more geared toward families, which is fine, but not for me.
Even though boat is still moving until it actually stops and docs at 8am, Do people start actually lining up to exit well before that and approx what time??
You have to be there at least 90 minutes before scheduled departure or you will not be allowed to sail. I’d say be there at least 2.5 hours before the departure time listed for your sailing.
As a resident of Charleston we do appreciate the cruise industry and also the reduced noise version of debarking. Idk if you can see, but the port is actually right in the middle of town, and people live about 1000 feet away on the other side. Because of that I don’t think they can really build more there. I’m not sure I can appreciate the haughty attitude of the host , but yes Charleston is full of history and a graceful city. Sorry to see the cruise ships go.
that definitely sounds like it sucks for you guys! but my thing is, why did they even set it up like that in the first place! since no other port has people living in the backyard, then they should have done that here too, so that we can enjoy our stuff (all bells and whistles, literally), but you guys can also sleep and work!
@@kevinbarrett1996 whoa I had no idea! I literally just booked spring break 2024, guess I got it just in time! ARe they retiring the actual ship (it IS pretty old even with all the renovations!), or just not coming to your port anymore, or your port is closing for all ships?

Once you sail Mardi Gras, It's hard to go back to the older ships. That thing is a masterclass in Cruise Ship design. Still, You can get some smoking deals Sunshine itineraries and aside from the god-awful Lido buffet layout (do the Italian and Asian Kitchen at lunch the first days of cruise btw -- Buffet is ridiculous on the first couple of days before people learn the layout of Sunshine), she's got it where it counts and you can have a lot of fun on the ship. I also recommend avoiding Aft rooms on Sunshine as engine vibrations can cause all manner of rattles. Stick with center or better yet, forward if you enjoy walking the ship length a lot.
