@tashieenclonar5562 by March 2024 there will be increase in sales tax in hotels. So not sure how it will affect cost here vs cost in thailand. Too early to say. However the bank rates OPR did not change. This did not affect borrowing cost.

You don’t have to convince me how beautiful Kuala Lumpur is, I have visited it many times. You also don’t have to convince me how relatively cheap it is to live there compared to other developed countries. However, the elephant in the room that you seem to be missing, is the visa requirements that allows a person to “retire” in Malaysia. Malaysia does have a retirement visa for noncitizens, called MM2H, Malaysia My Second Home, however, unfortunately, the recent changes have made it too restrictive, at least, in my own case, to take advantage of your excellent suggestion.
It can be rough for sure. I even think Asian countries will make it harder for westerners to retire or even stay in their country longer.
The reason is western countries are falling into chaos. Asia does not need them. Asian countries are growing so well year over year.

I am also retired but a Malaysian living in Malaysia. I have known many expatriates from Europe, and UK mainly. Most have been here for ages and they all say, although they get paid well over here, they cannot retire back in their own country.

I can’t wait to get rid of my car in Las Vegas. One of the highest car insurance areas in the country. Insurance company informs me that if I cancel my insurance and sell my car that, if I purchase a car in the future that my insurance rates will skyrocket because I will be considered an uninsured motorist. My car insurance rates will be as though I am a brand new 16-year-old driver. Unreal! Liability only insurance on a subcompact five-year-old car is currently $1200 per year with a perfect driving record.

I do take public transport most of the time I go KL, but it has limited to the center area, to enjoy the real Malaysia you do need a vehicle, especially when going to say Cameron Highland, Genting Highland to cool down after a hot week. food is cheap anyway, especially if you take the local food and fruits. I would suggest one stay near one end of a subway or light-rail station and own a car if possible, make sure there is market or supermarket around, and have a good park around. Then you can enjoy your retirement there.

One thing that you could have touched on is the cost/need for a visa in order to stay in Malaysia long term. Currently, the MM2H requirements are high but there is hope that the rules will be relaxed some. That might be something you may want to talk about in another video since you did not mention how you are doing it.

Very nice comparison of expenditure and cost comparison between the USA and Kuala Lumpur. If you live outside the city centre, rental would be much cheaper. You do spend well on food in Malaysia, even enjoying your meal with a beer. Boose is very very expensive in Malaysia compared to neighbouring countries due to the heavy tax (referred to as sin tax). Very often heard phrase amongst travellers, "Work in Singapore, Live in Malaysia and Party in Thailand".

Retirement to Malaysia from a western country very contradictory - the actual living costs in Malaysia are quite inexpensive compared to the United States but the cost of the MM2H Visa is really high. A person has to show that they have a monthly income of over $8,000.00USD as well as a reserved account of at least 500,000 ringgit ($108,283), 2 million ringgit ($433,135) or 5 million ringgit ($1,082,837) based on three tiers - Silver, Gold and Platinum. Most retired Americans who are receiving $8,000. a month might as well just stay in the USA or find another country with easier visa access.

Yes the mm2h costs are totally out of whack with real cost of living here. It is an obvious money grab by the a Malaysian government..has nothing to do with the real monetary needs of an expat living here

You can also have your clothing tailored in Hoi an Vietnam and the round-trip ticket from Kuala Lumpur to danang is less than $100.

Whichever city in Malaysia but especially in Penang Ipoh Kuala Lumpur or Selangor state, these are the best places to retire.... you are apply for MM2H park yourself here and spend some time travelling around the nearby countries....Malaysia is multiracial and you will find easy communication and friendly people....

most people cannot afford a MM2H visa....Fixed deposit of $250,000? Minimum monthly income of nearly $9,000? Wow!
Try to venture to a couple of locations within Malaysia, such as, Taiping, Ipoh, Langkawi, Malacca, Cameron Highlands, Cherating, Penang, Kota Kinabalu. Would also suggest that you try Airbnbs, as their pricing is quite close to what you're paying for the hotel and the accommodation is expected to be better in terms of comfort.

lots of beautiful old buildings, great food (of course), you can do your morning walk in and around Penang Hill. Easy connection via train to Bangkok/KL.
I think I will retire there eventually, got a couple of decades to go yet :)
Always enjoy and learn from your vids. I'll be rolling into BKK from the States in about 10 days. Down to Pattaya to visit a friend, then an open agenda (due diligence) road trip down through Hua Hin and PKK. Hope to be doing the nomad retired expat thing within the next year. The wisest advise for living overseas. I recommend walking with good supportive tennis shoes (I use New Balance, Hoka and Asics for extra wide feet), not a clog type of shoes (I think I saw that is the type you have in this video). I had lower back surgery and my orthopedic surgeon said to invest on good shoes for your feet and back. Clog type is not supporting the back side of your feet. Thanks for the great advise. It's useful for me who is retiring in less than a year.

Wow! You have just talked about a life style that i want to do! Sell my house in Colorado and move to Asia!. I am longing more and more for the tropics! No regrets on just meeting you now but also wish i had jotted over to Penang last year when i did Thailand and Vietnam! I had the choice to renew my Thailand visa in Penang, but i went to Vietnam instead to do that. Traveled some in Vietnam and returned to Thailand to fly back to the US.
I am coming to the conclusion that i need a English speaking country, or Chinese. To get around and not being too frustrated figuring things out is a good approach for retirees. So being more strategic going overseas at my age of 77 is smart! If it is adventure still, i am game- I love living in foreign countries away from the US every so often! I was in Penang, and Singapore , Bali and other neighboring countries for a year in the early 90’s. I remember the food well in Penang,,,so gooood! And i had spent time in Mexico beach towns. Your home country of Hawaii is familiar to me. And being a creative free spirit, young at heart type and healthy enough lady, i still want to try to live in Asia, preferably near the ocean. Staying put and not being a tourist and mingle with locals and expats would be just perfect . The hotel room situation if it is a nice spacious size would just be great! Could i communicate with you privately? Thank you👍❤️🙏

Retiring in SEA is a great idea unless you want to spend more than a few months in one country. Many of the retirement or long-term visas are getting very expensive or more restrictive. I've been to 40 countries and love to travel but at this stage, I want a low-cost home base where I can go anytime I want.

I was in Hawaii recently, and it was hard to get a meal for under $20. I had one awesome local bento box meal for like $14 and it was a massive amount of food, enough for 2 really, but most places were a lot more expensive.

I love Malaysia and hope to move back soon. I can do a digital nomad visa but I'm waiting to see the new MM2H visa requirements as I want to make Malaysia my home base. The high fixed deposit and monthly income of US$10K is too much. If I can't afford it, I might rent for 3 months at a time and then go elsewhere for 3 months. Rinse and repeat.

We do not hv great long term visa here(not yet). Currently youtubers apply for 'de rantau' digital nomad visa. I heard a new long term visa plan will soon be announced.
I'm on MM2H currently must show an monthly income of USD$10K/month. Digital nomad visas are very difficult to get must be working for a publicly listed company.

When did you decide and make sure that you are ready for retirement? There is “Rule of 300”, most probably you already know. “If you have the amount which covers 300 times of your montly expenses, you can retire.” Did you apply this approach? Or you calculated the sum of dividends’ payments per month and your rental properties’ income?

The downside in malaysia is alcohol, it is expensive unless in tax free islands like:
1. Langkawi
2. Labuan
3. Pangkor
4. Tioman
So we control our consumption for non muslims to keep expenses low for beers and wine.

You get 90 days visa when you arrive. Travelling to other Asian countries including to Australia is cheap using the budget airlines. So you could travel to Thailand or Vietnam and re enter for another 90 days.

Malaysian here who has been an expat in Manila, Bangkok and Jakarta for more than 10 years. Currently back in KL and loving every second and I’m contemplating to move to either Penang, Ipoh or Taiping to retire, although my hometown is in Malacca. I would say Malaysia offers the middle ground compared to our neighbours in terms of congestion, traffic, pricing, etc.

For example how much for a month supply of zolpidem tartrate (generic for the sleep medication Ambien 10mg)? Also I'm curious to know the cost of a visit to the doctor for a well visit like when you just need prescription refills. And what about a sick visit ? Thankyou!!!
I know this medication and I have never found it over the counter anywhere in Asia unfortunately

@@RetireandGo No, zolpidem tartrate is not an over the counter medication. I was asking how much it costs for prescription medications in Malaysia. I'm seriously considering moving there. I've basically narrowed it down to three countries and all the research I am doing is making Malaysia look better and better!
